Earlier this week, MS MR released Secondhand Rapture , a lovely debut album full of enigmatic alt-pop, and last night (May 16) they made their network television debut to celebrate the release. The duo of Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow (plus two extra live band-mates) performed "Hurricane" on the Late Show with David Letterman (sans blue and red body paint ). Lizzy's voice has an even smokier cabaret feel live, and combined with the more front-loaded synths, there's a nice fog/neon juxtaposition that isn't as apparent on the studio version. [...]

MS MR made their TV debut last night on Late Show with David Letterman. I was so anxious to see which song they'd perform. Bones? Hurricane? Dark Doo Wop?! They ended up performing their hugely successful and loved single "Hurricane." Just wait for that moment at the 3:50 mark...Lizzy's vocals delivers pure bone-chilling goosebumps. MS MR ’s first single, “ Hurricane ” admittedly stirred very little in me. The lustrous vocals of Lizzy Plapinger swelled and echoed along to the "MR"-half of the New York twosome, Max Hershenow ’s slick production; its punchy drums and subtle horns crafted textured grooves against the fluid synthwork that flowed throughout. It was all very pretty and indeed worthy of the subsequent praise, but for a song that welcomed us to “the inner workings of [Plapinger’s] mind,” you’d have expected sparks to fly, pits of intrigue to fall into, and [...]

While we're all waiting for the warm weather to officially take hold (we've been given an enticingly cruel taste of it here in Northwest), Vampire Weekend has created the perfect summer album to fuel your anticipation. At times wistfully nostalgic, percolatingly peppy and even fiercely energetic, Modern Vampires of the City is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the year so far.
