If Godzilla is on your show poster, I will talk about you. Didn't I see you at Weedeater on Monday night? Oh, I didn't? That's because I was played hooky and wasn't there. Where I was happens to be none of your business (read: sitting on my bed, fatigued and shoegazing). The underlining point is that [...]
We'll be the first to admit this list is arriving, oh, at least a month late. On the other hand, 2010 was an expansive year for Northwest music in many regards and worthy of chronicling one last time with thoughtful and focused intention. So we hope you will see that the extra time we've given [...]
Damien Jurado ::: photo by Abbey Simmons Our big, written properly, not just a list of The Top 25 Northwest Albums of 2010 is coming soon, really, WE PROMISE. But today I wanted to share my personal favorites of 2010. Also, my number one most listened to local album of 2010 was basically a "Best [...]

So. It's that time where we decide to rank our children and tell which ones are our favorites. It can't be good for their selfestime but damnit, it makes us feel good. 10. The Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt The sophomore release from this amazing UK songwriter won my heart over and made me cry just a little. "Tallest Man On Earth - King Of Spain" 9. Avi Buffalo - [...]

List by Christopher Carosi iTunes claims to see into your soul. They know everything, those fuckers. There's something subtly insulting about a company that believes it can do everything for you and cut corners because it knows exactly what every user wants. Hmph. My fear is that all of Western humanity (potential users) can in fact be easily pleased across the board and that Apple is merely capitalizing on what is true: we are all easily defined by what we consume. [...]
Tweet From The Bay Bridged mailbag: Subject: Correct your action please GROSS OVERSIGHT!! I have been listening and enjoying you podcast since I moved here about six months ago and I have heard some great music I have never heard before, and for that I thank you. However I was shocked and appalled when I listened to this (live this month Dec.) And I did not hear a peep about one of my favorite bands, Mt. Saint Helens Vietnam Band. I have [...]

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band 's success story is a fun one to tell, although it's still in the early stages of development. In 2008, vocalist/guitarist Benjamin Verdoes, guitarist Matthew Dammers and bassist Jared Price brought in Benjamin's wife Traci Eggleston and adoptive brother Marshall Verdoes to be part of their new musical project. Eggleston contributes on keyboards and percussion, while Marshall is the group's enthusiastic drummer. At only 13 years old, Marshall became responsible for the group's unusual name. He starred in the band's introduction to the world in the form of a [...]

Photo by Chona Kasinger It's easy to imagine Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band sitting around the living room and having a serious band talk after a particularly rough practice. After all, tensions rise in any band sooner or later, at which point a little cooling off and airing of grievances is probably a good idea for everyone involved. But this Seattle quartet is a special case: It's an almost-all-in-the-family band composed of guitarist Benjamin Verdoes, his wife, keyboardist Traci Eggleston, and Verdoes' adopted little brother, 15-year-old drummer Marshall. (Oh, right, we said quartet: pity [...]

Both albums by Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band were savaged in Pitchfork reviews . Listening to Where the Messengers Meet , the latest release from this Seattle band, I can't say that the latest review (and a lowly 3.3 rating) is deserved. Sure, it's an overwrought sound in stretches and the album overall is uneven but there are high points, including the songs At Night, Messengers and Hurrah . The band, which may appeal to fans of Grizzly Bear or Dirty Projectors , plays the Empty Bottle [...]
Yesterday's set featured: At Night Gone Again Hurrah You Were/I Was Stream the full playback here. Where The Messengers Meet is out now. MP3: Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band - Hurrah

Today, instead of doing any work I'm going to paraphrase my favorite radio station's website to tell you about a concert. KEXP puts on free concerts all summer that are actually pretty legit and tomorrow august 27th, will be the final show of the summer. If you would like to read a bio/watch video, i suggest visiting KEXP. Here are the songs from each band: Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band ‒ Inuit The Head and The [...]
Earlier this month, the Seattle-based Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band delivered its highly awaited sophomore release, Where the Messengers Meet . For the quartet, the album's polished production was a move in the right direction , but we were left wanting a little more of the energy from their earlier efforts. So as the foursome begin packing for their upcoming US tour, we hope they remember to bring the energy that first captured our attention. After performing with The Head & The Heart for their hometown audience August 27th, MSHVB will begin [...]

Doron Gild It's understandable if Toronto fans of Syracuse's Ra Ra Riot waiting for them to come back to town turned their frowns upside down and then right back again when their local appearance this coming Saturday was announced - rather than a proper club show to showcase the material from their just-released-today second album The Orchard , they were booked in at the Molson Amphitheatre opening up for City & Colour and Tegan & Sara . Which isn't to say that some of their fanbase ven [...]

For Tiny Mix Tapes : Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band Where The Messengers Meet Dead Oceans We all know the saying about what happens when you assume. And we also know that a band's name usually has little to do with its sound or its genre (see: Conifer ). But Ben Verdoes and his Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band seemed to uninitiated ears to promise something either ramshackle or violent or both, a troupe of minstrels preaching peace and protest or waging [...]

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band 's debut was an obvious one. With low production, and a cluster of safe ideas making for a more straight rock experience, it lacked any real identity, and didn't get them very far. Their first attempted to reach for greatness; their second album Where the Messengers Meet sees them taking themselves more seriously. You finally get to feel a sense of knowing exactly what they're going for, resulting in cleaner ideas and original moments that give more of a distinct edge to their sound. This is an edge however that we've all heard [...]

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band 's debut album introduced them as an indecisive indie band, fond of using power chords while incorporating elements of other genres. Varying tempos and time signatures, as well as the occasional spell of synths and strings, made the self-titled album a multifaceted amalgamation of musical odds and ends. One year on, the family-come-band return with more of their self-branded "chaotic energy", still latching onto their experimental ways but loosening their grasp on the reigns of indie-punk. The opening track, 'At Night', sets the album off to a strong start. A warm air of [...]
