Treefort Music Fest Year Two: Boise Does It Better

Treefort Music Fest Year Two: Boise Does It Better Photo by Ben Lindbloom Modeled as an emerging acts festival and meant to scoop up artists on the last legs of their SXSW tours, Treefort Music Fest is to Austin's behemoth as Idaho is to Texas: smaller and maybe with a few more trees. Since its inception, SXSW has become a huge part of Austin's identity, not to mention its economy. This year alone, the festival brought an estimated 200 million dollars in revenue into the city. Treefort is in a position to do something similar for Boise, but look closer. SXSW 2013 also came with a slew [...]

SXSW 2013: Day 3 evening – a nice stay at the Hype Hotel, followed by a rave sponsored by new friends from Sheffield – 14th March 2013

SXSW 2013: Day 3 evening – a nice stay at the Hype Hotel, followed by a rave sponsored by new friends from Sheffield – 14th March 2013 Today's SXSW 2013 post has been written to remind everyone of the size and stature of the SXSW music festival. While in my 2 years of festivaling in Austin I've managed pretty well on a press wristband, not really ever been shut out of a showcase I was desperate to see because the place was at capacity, there comes a time (or times) in your SXSW life that you just decide you want to see a big name. But at the same time, I implore you to seek out the smaller shows [...]

SXSW 2013 Interview: Cathal Cully, Claire Miskimmin and Philip Quinn of Girls Names

One of the best 'discoveries' of mine from SXSW 2013 was guitar band Girls Names from their spiffy appearance at the NI@SXSW showcase on Monday night. I put 'discoveries' in quotes, because I really should have heard of them prior to this trip to Austin. No matter though; I'm going to keep a close eye on this Belfast band. I didn't think I would be able to find them, as their American PR told me to try and find them at one of their gigs. But [...]

SXSW 2013: Day 3 afternoon – from Rainey Street to Waterloo Records and back to 6th Street – 14th March 2013

SXSW 2013: Day 3 afternoon – from Rainey Street to Waterloo Records and back to 6th Street – 14th March 2013 The title of today's SXSW post isn't very descriptive, as I didn't stay in one particular place too long and my plans kept changing. And such is life at SXSW , because even with the best laid plans, there is still a chance that an opportunity comes along that you've just got to grab with both hands and savour the moment. If you had read my dog-eared, notation-covered schedule for Thursday, you would have saw that I had planned to St. Albans' seminal rock band the Zombies at a house party [...]

Update: Everything Everything added as Great Escape 2013 headliner, alongside Billy Bragg and Bastille

Take a stroll down to the seaside and grab some Harry Ramsden’s, go on, treat yourself. The weather has been off its rocker in the first few months of the year, and well, it’s just time to chill out and have some you time next to the sea. Oh, you don’t fancy relaxing? Well, hey, why not take in the Brighton seascape and the hottest new bands in the world too? That tickles your fancy, yeah? I thought so. The line-up so far has been nothing short of phenomenal and to [...]

SXSW 2013: Day 2 evening – Music from Ireland showcase at Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room and Communion showcase at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop – 12th March 2013

SXSW 2013: Day 2 evening – Music from Ireland showcase at Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room and Communion showcase at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop – 12th March 2013 I'm not sure if this was a problem that only massively plagued UK bands or if it bled into bands from other countries as well, but I must have done and redone my SXSW schedule 10 times in the lead-up to the week of SXSW 2013. And this was all owing to band cancellations: some bands had 'a family emergency', others simply didn't respond to my questions of "are you still coming to SXSW?" With the first version of my schedule, I thought I would have to make some seriously tough choices [...]

SXSW 2013 Interview: Kris Harris, Rob Wilks and Jack Tarrant of Story Books

Kent's Story Books were one of my great discoveries pre-SXSW as I was preparing the TGTF Guide to SXSW 2013 over Christmas holiday. While there were some conversational gems that weren't recorded - such as how frontman Kris Harris is an avid cider drinker like myself - there is loads more that was recorded in this interview with Harris, fellow Isle of Sheppey native and drummer Rob Wilks and guitarist Jack Tarrant that we did in the lovely bar area of Blackheart club on Rainey Street Thursday afternoon of this year's [...]

SXSW 2013: Day 2 afternoon – British Music Embassy at Latitude 30 and Blah Blah Blah Science Party at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop – 12th March 2013

SXSW 2013: Day 2 afternoon – British Music Embassy at Latitude 30 and Blah Blah Blah Science Party at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop – 12th March 2013 Probably the greatest thing about SXSW is that nearly any time of day or night – or maybe any time before 11 AM – there is someone, somewhere gigging. The numerous day parties given by blogs, magazines, labels, PR companies and anyone else with the money and the get up and go to put on a show are often free and provide an entirely different atmosphere than the evening counterparts. I mean, seriously, where else can you see a show with wonderful sunshine framing the stage? And not to make you jealous [...]

Treefort Day Two & Day Three: In Which Our Limits are Realized & Subsequently Surpassed

Treefort Day Two & Day Three: In Which Our Limits are Realized & Subsequently Surpassed Photo by Ben Linbloom It's already the last day of Treefort and I don't want it to be over. It snowed intermittently throughout the day on Friday, which brought some cause for concern about happenings on the outdoor main stage. Seattle's Deep Sea Diver were the first to brave the chilly scene and they got lucky with sunshine and occasional wind gusts, adding a hint of drama that complemented impeccable renditions of "Nwo" and "History Speaks." In spite of it being their last show of the tour, Deep Sea Diver brought what [...]

Awolnation feat. Kendrick Lamar & Ab-Soul – Sail (Remix)

Awolnation feat. Kendrick Lamar & Ab-Soul – Sail (Remix) The seemingly ubiquitous Kendrick Lamar and fellow TDE member Ab-Soul provide electronic band Awolnation  with some hip-hop flavor, each dropping verse's on the group's original track, "Sail."  The hit single originally premiered in 2011, but the two label mates still found it relevant enough to  refurbish it a bit, justifying that EDM and Hip-Hop can successfully merge with one another (sometimes). Stream the tagged version via The LA Leakers below, and expect a CDQ version soon. Awolnation feat. Kendrick Lamar & Ab-Soul – Sail (Remix) [...]

Treefort Day One: In Which Musical Horizons are Gently Expanded

Treefort Day One: In Which Musical Horizons are Gently Expanded Photo by Ben Lindbloom Treefort has begun! Here are a few highlights from DHM's first day at the festival. An in-store spoken word performance by Sage Francis at the Record Exchange preceded even Treefort's official kick off and I can't imagine a better way to have warmed up for the weekend's festivities, i.e., by getting real with some capital "F" Feelings. When Sage speaks it is impossible to move . His presence fills any space and stretched the RX (crowded with humans, too, midway through the set) at the seams. Francis [...]

SXSW 2013: Huw Stephens / UK Trade and Investment showcase at Latitude 30 – 12th March 2013

SXSW 2013: Huw Stephens / UK Trade and Investment showcase at Latitude 30 – 12th March 2013 Last year, I spent the majority of my time at the British Music Embassy at Latitude 30. It was so long ago now, I don't really remember if it was more because it was a safe place for me because I knew exactly where it was on San Jacinto Boulevard, or if it was the line-ups that drew me there. In any event, at SXSW 2013 I was mildly disappointed by the programme being presented over the week, with a lot of bands that I just didn't care for. Traditionally, Tuesday [...]

SXSW 2013: Pre-Festival Shenanigans with the Dig at Clive Bar and the NI@SXSW showcase at Latitude 30 – 10th and 11th March 2013

SXSW 2013: Pre-Festival Shenanigans with the Dig at Clive Bar and the NI@SXSW showcase at Latitude 30 – 10th and 11th March 2013 You may think it's mental showing up a full 2 days before the madness known as SXSW officially begins on a Tuesday, but it was part of my concerted effort to ease myself gently into the maelstrom. That's the benefit of having been through the craziness at least once before; not only do you not get lost every 5 minutes in Austin, you also have the foresight to take it easy as you can. I arrived in Austin Sunday afternoon after a very bumpy, turbulence-filled plane ride from California [...]

Review: Snowball Music Festival 2013

Review: Snowball Music Festival 2013 Snowball in a nutshell! (Photo Credit: David Rodman ) Held last weekend in Winter Park, CO, the third installment of the Snowball Music Festival can only be described as a raging success – heavy emphasis on the “rage.” Like 2011 and 2012 before it, Snowball 2013 remained heavy on the EDM when putting together its lineup. This year boasted 51 artists in 3 days, featuring local, national, and international names - including some of the biggest names in the electronic music world: Pretty Lights , STS9 , Big Gigantic , Porter [...]

Canadian Musicfest Picks (2013)

Another edition of Canadian Musicfest (the music showcase component of Canadian Music Week ) quietly kicked off yesterday evening but it gets into full gear tonight. I've gone through the list of artists, skimming bios, listening to audio, checking out videos, what-have-you, and have cobbled together a long list of artists that I found interesting, both from abroad, and from our own fair country / city. On a side note, I must mention that the whole process of 'researching' who I might be interested in seeing is an entirely un-fun experience - it's long, boring, and tiring [...]
