The last two days of MusicfestNW brought a sold-out crowd to Pioneer Square and culminated in an epic performance from Silversun Pickups.
Despite almost no escape from hot venues and high heat, Portland showed their love for live shows at MusicfestNW.
Yesterday, Portland's MusicFestNW wrapped up five days of concerts at over a dozen venues throughout the city. Among the acts who performed were Passion Pit, Beirut, Girl Talk, Dinosaur Jr., Flying Lotus, Swans, Fucked Up, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Wild Nothing, Purity Ring, and DIIV. Autumn Andel was on hand to capture the annual fest in photos for us; check out her gallery above.
The ever-expanding MFNW brought the rock to Portland.

It's a beautiful sunny September here in Portland, Oregon and the annual MusicfestNW has just started! So many amazing bands, just look at this lineup! I'm excited to see several of the groups scheduled to play but I'm most stoked for the local talent. The organizers at MusicfestNW do an excellent job providing opportunities for talented local Portland bands to share the stage with national acts. Case in point - one of my favorite groups to start up within the last couple years, Palmas , is sharing the stage with Tanlines on [...]

MusicFest NW turned it up to 11, offering up a full slate on its second night of action. Tanlines, Old 97s, Ceremony, Omar Souleyman, Those Darlins and The Men were among the acts we saw. Roseland Theater, 7:33pm: ReignWolf What year is this anyway? I asked myself. Then I realized nobody in this Seattle-based trio can even be 25-- ReignWolf sounds like they were imported straight from 1972. And I mean that in a good way. Seriously, who even knows what a "power trio" is anymore? Well, these guys sure do. With [...]

It was full steam ahead with a full slate of action across Portland for MFNW Friday. Beirut, The Helio Sequence, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Future Islands, and Talkdemonic, among others, all figured in our mix. Pioneer Courthouse Square, 8:21pm: Beirut A fairly packed Courthouse-square crowd swooned, danced and appeared awestruck at one of 2012's bigger buzz bands. And the Southwestern/world-music laced group lived up to the hype as they swung and grooved their way through much of 2011's acclaimed The Rip Tide [...]

The 12th annual MusicFest NW got underway with a comparatively light night across Portland that still left more than enough options. Here's some of we saw and heard from night one. Hawthorne Theater, 8:03pm: Joyce Manor The puckish California quartet stormed through a 28 minute set of fast paced chugging punk songs to an audience whose eager anticipation was easily satiated. There was crowdsurfing, crowd singalongs, and moshing all within the first five minutes. The last time I saw this much enthusiasm for an opening band might have been when [...]

Here is The Antlers with their live performance at MusicFestNW on KEXP performing "I Don't Want Love" (above), "Rolled Together", "Hounds" and "Putting The Dog To Sleep" (below).

Saturday, September 10th: my last full day and night in PDX. MusicFestNW officially ends on the night of the 11th, but Band of Horses and whatnot are hardly drivers for me to stay. So Saturday is IT for me, best make the most of it. Conveniently, one of the bands I'm most in love/lust with, The Antlers . Their latest album Burst Apart is a bit of genius. So I haul ass to the Doug Fir for their noon KEXP sesh, in the hope that I can corner the boys and make nice before I [...]

It's Friday, September 9th and I've had no sleep from the night before's shenanigans . But Music Fest NW waits for no-one, not even a dead woman walking. So I man up and make my way into the Doug Fir at the ungodly hour of 10am to see what UK's spindly, former baby Goths-with-vampy-names The Horrors a) look like and b) sound like when they have to perform tracks off of fab new album Skyying at a time when they should be drooling in bed. [...]

Nearly 200 bands from the PacNorWes' and beyond descended upon Stumptown, America (Portland) from September 7-11 for MusicFestNW , a five-day fête of mostly Americana/indie rock, hosted in more than 20 venues. Seattle radio station extraordinaire KEXP also rocked up, and took over the city's brilliant Doug Fir Lounge, bringing happy radio listeners and all-ages crowds some free day sessions with 12 of the more-awesome bands that were passing through. And hey, guess what? I was there, too. Why? Because Portland rules: there's beers, hippies, hipsters, fixie bikes, good food, nice venues and awesome donuts. And I spent [...]
Day 4 of MusicFestNW finished a weekend of diverse music and masterful performances.
Mostly strong performances made Day 3 of MusicFestNW a good reason to stay up late.

That's a wrap! The last of five days of performances throughout the city officially came to a close with Band of Horses' Pioneer Square set-- but there was still plenty that followed. The action actually got started early on with a matinee for the kiddies. Kennedy School, 12:46 PM: You Who! with AgesandAges This ain't Romper Room . Portland's under three-feet-tall set shook and spun to some very danceable bhangra provided by the talented DJ Anjali. In a corner, juniors colored paper owl masks, a mascot [...]

From September 7th to 11th, music obsessives in Portland, OR trekked between 21 venues to see nearly 200 bands, fighting dehydration, worn heels, and sticky wristbands, all for the glory of Musicfest NW (MFNW). What were the highlights? Every person will give you a different answer. Was it Seattle radio station KEXP’s free day shows at the Doug Fir including the Horrors, Sebadoh and the Antlers? Watching the sun set with Band of Horses, Iron & Wine, or Explosions in the Sky outdoors at Pioneer Square? The Thermals stagediving and blowing out their amp at the EMP Backstage? Legendary [...]
