Glasgow, Scotland's Errors have it made on the NME best list this year. The group's last release was a solid remix EP featuring bands like Mogwai, and Gold Panda. Their last video, "A Rumour In Africa" is a pumped up electro track; although, we can't possibly go through watching it one more time (even though we love the track: the video of a man controlling puppet women--a kind of bleakly pictured robert palmer wannabe, frankly creeped us out). Earlier this year they released "Come Down With Me" and in the past they've [...]
December 6th on iTunes, accompanying tracks from the latest single by Toronto, Ontario's Crystal Castles will be released. The A-side of the single from the duo's album "II" features the smart remake of Canadian 80s group Platinum Blonde in Crystal Castle's cover of their song "Not In Love". This song went on to become another one of this year's most talked-about remixes featuring the vocals of The Cure's Robert Smith. Smith must have thought it very clever for Canada's Crystal Castles to be covering not only a band from CC's home province of Ontario, but also a rather glam [...]
We're becoming 'weekend warriors' beginning tonight as we hope to take in not one, but two great events this evening. It all begins with England Belongs to Twee's reunion presentation of 14 ICED BEARS who will be appearing at The Barbary (951 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia) tonight with local twee favorites (and Slumberland alum) Brown Recluse and the night's openers; Reports. It's a relatively early show with Reports going on promptly at 7:15 p.m. We're assuming dancing afterwards? For those of you wondering why the hype over a band named after bears? In 1986, the UKs music paper, the [...]

After feverishly collecting their limited singles and past EPs, a most recent album, the beautiful and minimalist "Clinging to a Scheme", and waiting patiently for a tour--Swedish new wave popsters Radio Dept. are finally coming to the US. And now we have it--two lonely dates in the middle of Winter. The timing for this group's first NYC dates couldn't fit the scape of their music better. November 30th at The Knitting Factory and December 1 at Bowery Ballroom will see two VERY exclusive dates for the band who are self-confessed 'shy' spirits on stage. [...]
According to a latest Uncut Magazine news post written just this afternoon, Andy Bell and Mark Gardener's famed and beloved group Ride are set to hit the trails next year. The announcement comes on the heels of the group's live DVD which will hopefully be released soon also. Grab all of your limited edition singles and get ready to rock, in TORONTO. The group has been slated for Toronto, already making one of its first (and hopefully not last) dates known by confirming to play the coming year's NXNE (North by Northeast) festival in Toronto, Ontario in Canada [...]
We can't always be in two places at once; but if we were in Philadelphia tonight, and we could be anywhere this evening we would be in the cozy back room of Kung Fu Necktie enjoying the laid-back and lovely Canadian sounds being made by our friends' in The Acorn . The group earlier this year put out their latest album "No Ghost" to fantastic reviews all around, and we've always felt very personally moved by Rolf Klausener's soft and tremulous vocals whenever we hear the pitter-patter of beats that swell in song [...]

Three 4 Tens' Joe Tagg has a new side-project by the name of Solaram . The new name was inspired by Tagg's astrological sign (he's an Aries, hence the 'ram in the name) and although the sound is unsurprisingly filled with Tagg's psych-pop-sensibilities (a penchant for shoegaze that tends more towards a 'spacier'-troubadour sound--think The Byrds if they were a less pastel The Dandy Warhols). This description also lends a comparison to his other band; but it stops here, and leaves the lighter stuff behind for a strong and layered sound introducing something more polished than [...]

The Charlatans UK , who played last night right here in Philadelphia, were on stage at local Fishtown favorite Johnny Brenda's. In the middle of the group's song "Tellin' Stories" (a track that was a special request from a fan who showed up early), talented drummer Jon Brookes (who has incidentally been lighting up the stage with his fantastic playing for the group's US dates) suddenly seemed to stop. The band and crowd slowly came to the realization that Jon needed medical attention and was having a seizure. Thankfully there was a doctor in attendance at the show [...]

The Mary Onettes "The Night Before The Funeral" from Labrador Records on Vimeo . Lead singer Philip from Swedish group The Mary Onettes recently finished his directorial debut for their song 'The Night Before the Funeral". The video hits close to Philip's heart, showing a rather emotional response to the song's lyrics as we follow Philip's brother, Mary Onettes bassist Henrik, traveling through the brother's old stomping ground from their Grandmother's house (see the handing of the guitar?) to the playgrounds and hang outs of their youth. [...]

Dallas or Dynasty captions, anyone? If you enjoy groups like The Stars, or New Pornographers with Neko Case at the helm, then you're bound to love The Secret History who are the featured act to play live tonight as part of England Belongs to Twee at Kung-Fu Necktie (Philadelphia). The band, who are based out of Brooklyn (former members of beloved-My Favorite), play a pastiche of organ-fumed pop with short bursts of powered sugar-tunes that will surely make the most depressed person tap a toe or two. We're not planning [...]
The Album Leaf play Philadelphia as part of their tour with Sea Wolf and will be at First Unitarian Church for a show this Sunday eve (May 2, 2010). The group whose sound mixes synth melodies and sample-loops with an other-worldly feel, spread their soft-male vocals over songs like something out of a lighter-sounding Boards of Canada outtake. The band, who has been playing certain dates with a string-quartet on call are unfortunately not using the quartet for this show in particular; but, if you can make it, they will be including the extra musicians at their Bowery Ballroom [...]

Lone Wolf is the recent signing of Yep Roc's sister label Bella Union (The Acorn, Fleet Foxes, John Grant). The debut single from LW's upcoming album (The Devil And I) is called Keep Your Eyes On the Road . The song itself is a dark, and brooding affair that is at its most brilliant: a cascade of melody, and at its lowest--a tunnel that winds upon itself, lyrically. Although the new single is impressive, it will forever be Lone Wolf's unusual accompanying video that will hold your attention long after the song dwindles. A near [...]

ARLT photos by C. Marcoux Openers ARLT who were handpicked to open both dates of The National's shows in Richmond, VA were an interesting duo to watch live, but were (perhaps) set before the wrong audience (a sold-out crowd of 1500 people) who were largely waiting for a rock band (loud and indecent). The delicate duo were due to fly in from Paris specifically for these dates, but could only make one because of the delay on air-traffic to and from Europe. They play music that is a mix [...]

All National photos by C. Marcoux The National played one of their first two nights for a fan preview at The National Theatre in Richmond, VA. The band who had not seen each other for two weeks used that day's soundcheck for a practice run of their show which also debuted a brand new light show as well. The group are getting ready for their summer dates, which begin in early May. These two dates will be followed by a nearly 50-date consecutive run for the group, which is huge for any seasoned group [...]
Every once and while a fan-made video comes along and you just hope the band will make it official. I've visited Neon Indian before and wasn't a huge fan with what I found. If you're a visual person, like me, sometimes you need that link to make you really 'get' one song or another. This Fan-vid, made by Spanish art student Lluis Panades Julia, is a perfect representation of Neon Indian's nostalgia laiden song. It's a memory of good times feathered at the edges. You know, a memory with jumpsuits. [...]

There is a lot to be said for the joyful pop music being created by Roslindale, Massachusetts' group Birds Of California . Their New Haven, Connecticut label February Records (formerly Tweefort) has just released a new single by the group, featuring three songs, that are available online for free download. We're happy to have been able to catch the group at the San Francisco Pop Festival showcase at Cafe Du Nord with Cherry Red, Dear Nora, and Eux Autres last year for their debut, and share part of that show and a few live [...]

As a sign of the times to come: bands that will be canceling US dates due to the volcanic eruptions that are happening in Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull, include Bernard Sumner's new group Bad Lieutenant who were set to tour for their debut album Never Cry Another Tear, and Frightened Rabbit (although with Frightened Rabbit, their tour is still expected to kick off on Monday April 19th instead....providing that British air space gets things off the ground...), and quite possibly Swedish group The Mary Onettes [...]

Photo by Kyle Marquette Dear Althea - Oh Today Philadelphia's Dear Althea play The Fire (412 Girard Avenue) tonight for their long-awaited CD release party for their EP "We Rob Banks". The release was originally slated for a party last November when L&I shut the venue down. Around this time, their drummer also left the band. But after a rough start, original members Ashley Wildes and Dean [...]

Brad Hargett, roguish front man, Maxwell's, photo by C. Marcoux The Crystal Stilts, live at Maxwell's (Hoboken, NJ) - 3/27/10 Another goodie, from the 'live music' folder! This is the live show that we took away from seeing The Crystal Stilts when they opened for Love Is All at Maxwell's in NJ this past month. Maxwell's is fast becoming our favorite place to see a band, and our favorite city (Hoboken) to hang around while we're waiting. NYC [...]
