SEASIDE LOVERS

I can't honestly say to you that 'Japanese downtempo electronic tropical jazz lounge' was ever a genre I would find myself blissfully enjoying after years of listening to No Wave. Seaside Lovers are that stroll on a plastic beach, sipping a fluorescent pina colada, with warped VHS star wipes and soft focus. A collaboration between Akira Inoue, Masataka Matsutoya and Hiroshi Sato and released in 1983, this would have sunk in bargain bins covered in hologram contact paper in a city record store in Tokyo, only to properly make sense now. MP3: [...]

Digging this Mad Eye Moody muzak.

ZOLA JESUS "NIGHT" MUSIC VIDEO
Digging this Mad Eye Moody muzak. Zola Jesus - "Poor Jesus" Zola Jesus - "Night" Zola Jesus is the stage name of 22 year-old Russian-American Nika Roza Danilova. She was raised in Merrill, Wisconsin on over 100 acres of forest. About the experience, she says: "I was delusional as a kid; I never spent a lot of time around other people…When you live around a lot of people in a city and that synthesized stimulation, you can get lost in that's the hustle and bustle. When [...]

Sunday morning gospel--Good ol' gospel Muzak!

Sunday morning gospel--Good ol' gospel Muzak! The above image was swiped from eBay--I tried to scan (and join together) my own image, but the results were wanting. Today's selections, however--Muzak or not--lack nothing: they are extremely well performed and arranged. "EZ" gospel, to be sure, but I'm not knocking it. Excellent playlist ( Come and Dine simply doesn't show up often enough), good singing--what's to knock? Give it a download--you won't be having downloader's remorse. By the way, I assume these were sold through TV? Can anyone tell me? At any rate, far worse products have passed [...]

Muzak Sold For $345 Million

Who knew there was so much money in background music? The sector's top provider in the U.S. Muzak has been sold to its Canadian competitor Mood Media for a whopping $345 million. The move makes Mood a global competitor, and comes at a time when background music is getting increased competition from everything from satellite radio to an employee's iPod plugged into a sound system.

Gorillaz perform on Letterman show, go crazy

Recently someone described how he used to turn up his nose at the anime-crazed hip-hop mega-group, the Gorillaz. I think Gorillaz may be victims of the times they became popular, in this awkward late 90s period of time when a group of British pop music makers could conceivably think that being an anime-crazed hip-hop group was a good idea. I mean, it's not a terrible pitch, owing to their pretty wide success, but it is an unfair characterization of the creativity and charm and undeniable talent of their outfit. Gorillaz have enough credibility to collaborate with Snoop Dogg and De [...]

Heavy Metal Advent Calendar: 10 December

Sometimes at Christmas, you'll be forced into a situation where it's simply not possible to crank out your favourite death metal album at full volume. Maybe your dear, frail old granny has come over for Christmas dinner, and her weak heart simply can't handle Anaal Nathrakh. What you need for situations like this is heavy metal disguised as Christmas music. We suspect the folks over at Christmas Rock Records are probably drunk most of the time, as they've released not one, not, two, but five albums [...]

Ben Cooper Interview

Ben Cooper Interview I recently had the pleasure of interviewing one of my favorite musicians, Ben Cooper, over the phone with my friend Sarah. He was incredibly laid back, very cool, and I've come to the conclusion that, if given the opportunity, we would be best friends. The twenty-four year old Florida resident is a jack-of-all-trades, participating in more than six projects over the span of his career. I was first introduced to his project Radical Face about a year ago. It's one of the few of Ben Cooper's strictly solo projects. That's really what impresses me [...]

Febraury Generica

"2K Pennies" by The Cool Kids
Hey readers, thought I'd drop some updates on ya. I've had a lot to write about in the last few weeks but never built up the motivation to post anything substantial. I've been struggling to find work, adapting to living at back in Brooklyn, and all the time listening to new, old and forgotten music. (Busy to say the least.) Anyway, thought I'd give you a taste of the last few weeks. First up, music videos: I never thought when I saw Kid Cudi months ago that he would blow up. Then [...]

Elevator Music Going Down?

Elevator Music Going Down? Filing for bankruptcy last week , Muzak – purveyor of smooth sounds and easy-listening classics to offices and malls everywhere – revealed that it will be unable to pay its nearly half-billion dollars in debts. Since 1936 the company has been sedating the masses with a catalog which now numbers over 2.6 million songs. Is Muzak finally getting the shaft? Or is there a ground floor opportunity here for an acquirer? Regardless of its future or your thoughts on the genre it created, Muzak has a storied past as part of American culture. [...]

RIP Muzak, or now I can find peace on the elevator

RIP Muzak, or now I can find peace on the elevator You know things are shitting the bed, economically speaking, when Muzak has declared for Chapter 11 bankruptcy . This won't guarantee that your morning elevator ride will be more pleasant, only that the Kenny G-styled mixtapes will no longer give you that gentle urge to kill a coworker when the elevator becomes packed like sardines. "While no business or individual is free from the wrath of the global economic crisis," Muzak was able to "weather the storm" and continued to generate positive cash flows, he said. Muzak had revenue of $249.1 million in [...]

Going Down?!? Muzak Declares Bankruptcy, Dentists Wonder What's on the Radio

Muzak is bankrupt. My initial reaction was a little-louder-than-appropriate -for-my-cubicle "Fuck Yeah!" cuz well, it's fucking Muzak and they epitomize the banal sterility of an industry at its most... Morning Buzz: Liz Phair, Muzak, Cotton Jones, Stella

:: I'll be honest, the more Liz Phair "sells out," the hotter she gets. So now she'll be like Lucy in that one episode. You know, that one. Why? Because she's working with Banana Republic . :: Cotton Jones Basket Ride recently went "off the record" with Aquarium Drunkard. :: Dave Allen (from Gang of Four , not the HXC founder and tattoo artist ) was happy to see the band Arizona utilizing the internet to its fullest . Me too. Although without any [...]

Muzak is discovering that blanketing public ... [It's The Economy]

Muzak is discovering that blanketing public ... [It's The Economy] Muzak is discovering that blanketing public spaces with music isn't as profitable as it used to be: The company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, thanks to some $100 billion million to $500 billion million in debt—including lots of money owed to various music-publishing concerns—and only about $50,000 in assets. [ The Street via Gawker ]

Big Ones

Big Ones Some big leaks/hidden gems i've discovered in the past few: Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Advance Base Battery Life I should preface this little blurb by making known my unhealthy obsession with CTFPA--he's my most listened-to artist on last.fm, and I feel a certain, perhaps unhealthy, self-masochistic pleasure in listening to his pathetically bleak and somber tunes over and over again. This, then, should make my disappointment with his latest LP all [...]

8Bit Strikes Again

Chocolate Rain 8Bit Remix
I don't think its possible to be between the ages of 18 and 28 and not appreciate 8bit music. Simulating, recreating and appropriating the sounds of our favorite NES games, 8bit provides endless possibilities for funny remixes....like this: I like this video because it proves that these creative geniuses have not lost their competitive edge. 8Bit musician, "Coda", is apparently beefing with some other people who are "gay" and full of "faggotry". We wish you well, Mr. Coda man. Gods speed in your quest for 8bit dominance. Also, check out this guy! [...]

"Remember back in days..."

"Remember back in days..." Here are the facts: My name is Jesse Parnell. I was named after Jesse Jackson. I was almost named Magic Parnell (my mom had a thing for Magic Johnson). I was born and raised in Brooklyn, and I smoked Newports until I coughed up black stuff and had to switch to Camels. (I'm broke now so I sport the rollie's.) I like pretentious literature/critical theory and talking about Zombie apocalypse contingency plans. If I could only bring one book, one album and a movie onto an deserted island it would be the Bible by Prophets, Saints and God; "Enter the [...]

listens

listens A couple albums that I've been listening to lately which are also incidentally listed consecutively in my iTunes, and a shameless shout-out for a friend's band. Au Revoir Borealis - Dark Enough for Stars Though sporting probably one of the worst band names ever, or at least the largest discrepancy between band name/music quality, Dark Enough for Stars is a magical listen as long as you don't have to mention its [...]

sound experiments

sound experiments I've been listening to a lot of this quirky Danish-German dude, Jacob Kirkegaard, lately. I don't really know his back-story, but he seems to be a scientist/musician/field-recor dist 'hybrid' of sorts, always having his musical projects motivated by some weird sound-study. For example, my first exposure to him was my discovery of 2008's Labyrinthitis , a short little piece in which he initially plays a certain frequency, which apparently triggers some movement of the inner-workings of yer ear that produces a separate frequency, then layers that frequency on top of the previous one, repeating the process for 30 minutes or [...]
