"Dad Rock" started as a snarky label that music snobs & critics lobbed at aging classic rock-influenced bands like Wilco and The National . Maybe because it's Fathers' Day weekend or because I will be a new dad next month (if due dates hold true), but I'm joining Jeff Tweedy in embracing the once-derogatory term. So here's a mix of some modern dad rock, all from the last three years and all of which I happen to love. Download the entire mix here . [...]
Hi, my name is Matt. And thank you for looking at my list. I'm the staff member that tends to lean towards the atmospheric, embellished, vastly over-extravagant kinds of songs. I like to get lost/lose myself to the music. Over the next sequence of 20 songs, you'll be delivered to far off places where the floor is [...]
Washington's Sasquatch! Festival took place over the weekend, a heavy-hitting four day lineup featuring people like Jack White, St. Vincent. Bon Iver, Beck, Sanitgold, the Shins, Feist, Metric and dozens more. Stereogum contributor Alex Crick was on hand to behold and snap some great shots. Check out his gallery up top.

Wilco + Paul Oakenfold + M.Ward + Dawes + Coheed and Cambria + Alabama Shakes performing in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 18, 2012 for the Hangout Music Festival
Day one of the third annual Hangout Fest went off without much of a hitch, even if it did feel hotter than low 80s. With the sun high in the sky and blazing, thousands of people funneled themselves into the festival’s secondary stage area to witness Brittany Howard and her Alabama Shakes prove that the hype was warranted. Oh, it was so warranted. And while the crowd was sizeable at sunset for legendary rockers Wilco’s set, it was nowhere near the depth of Alabama Shakes, and as the Wilco set progressed, people began to leave in [...]
On this edition of Audiography we feature reviews from the latest releases by Sleepy Sun, post metal stalwarts Pelican, M. Ward, and blues rockers Alabama Shakes. Also featured is a conversation with singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi, or LP. After releasing a couple albums in the early aughts, Pergolizzi made her way through the industry working as a songwriter, writing hits for acts like Rihanna, the Backstreet Boys, and Heidi Montag. Her music has appeared in hit television shows such as The Hills and The Voice and perhaps most famously in a Citi Bank commercial. With a new contract [...]
Alabama Shakes dish some soulful rock on their debut release. There's plenty of post-Easter, post-Passover new releases to sneeze at as you reach for the Clariton amidst all the bloomage (YOU SWORE, NO MORE FLOWER METAPHORS!). It's Spring Break somewhere, so pop in a few of these tasty offerings in your portable media player choice (is it any wonder folks will write 'iPod' even if they don't own one?) and lie back in the break destination of your choice. I'm off to San Jose del Cabo, myself, for a few days of carpel [...]

A few of my favorite new releases this week, including the latest from M. Ward and Amadou & Mariam, some standup from the very funny Donald Glover, and the highly anticipated debut LPs from Alabama Shakes and Kishi Bashi (my personal favorite this week). As always, be sure to check out Largehearted Boy , Amoeba Music , and KEXP for a whole lot more of this week's musical offerings. [...]

Did you know that Record Store Day (April 21) is less than two weeks away? Are you ready? What have you done to prepare yourself for it? Today is a perfect day to make a test run to your local shop, where you can scout for the best positions and flex the required muscles by filling up your basket with some of this week's worthwhile new releases. At the top or your stack (or maybe the bottom, as it's likely to be the first thing you grab today), should be the anticipated full-length debut from the soulful-beyond-their-years [...]

The line-up for this years Sasquatch Festival came out on Thursday night and it is a pretty decent looking list. Even though there is roughly a -12% chance that I will be able to attend this year, I thought it would be kind to preview some songs from artists that I would be excited to go see. This is just a small sampling so head over to The Official Site for more info about bands playing and how to get tickets. Enjoy! Free mp3: Active Child - Hanging [...]
