Bright Eyes' opening tracks are everything an album starter should be. 20052s I'm Wide Awake It's Morning featured a nonchalant chat over tea during a plane crash. 20062s Cassadaga began with a lost voicemail from a Florida spiritual center that developed into a crashing [...]
There is no denying the unbelievable adorableness of She & Him's doey-eyed lead singer Zooey Deschanel - check out her blog which completely reinforces that statement. Sure, we're huge fans of M. Ward too, but it's the actress/singer who is the star of the show in the indie-pop duo . The pair, who's sophomore album Volume Two came out last year, have just released this 1960s mod meets sci-fi video for Don't Look Back... She & Him - Don't [...]

Have an hour to kill in front of the computer (or internet TV)? Then check out our favorite supergroup, the Monsters of Folk live on Austin City Limits. Jim James, M. Ward and the gang turn in a rock solid 12 song set in the lonestar state capital. Having never before seen MOF's live show, I was pretty impressed. It is one thing to pull together in the studio, but its really great to see so many talented individuals work so well together as a whole on stage. Watch the video, or just [...]
Watch: Monsters of Folk on Austin City Limits While Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis are busy unveiling tunes off the forthcoming Bright Eyes album, The People’s Key , their last collaboration alongside M. Ward and Jim James, Monsters of Folk, has stepped into the limelight one last time with last night’s broadcast of their Austin City Limits set from October. Watch the quartet (backed by drummer Will Johnson) trade off on vocals, guitar, bass, and keys in the excellent 12-song, hour-long performance above. The setlist: [...]
For the second consecutive year at Hidden Track, we concocted our innovative little experiment for the year-end Best Albums list. Instead of picking the old fashioned way – subjectively – we opted for something a little different: a collaborative, collective list that incorporates the opinions of everybody here at HT. To begin, we devised an all-encompassing list of well over 100 nominees, whereby most everything our contributors recommended [...]
With the countdown to Santa's arrival coming to a close, we thought we'd get into the Christmas spirit around these parts with some holiday music courtesy of HT faves She & Him . During Matt and Zooey's recent appearance on Conan , the indie-pop duo recorded this web exclusive performance of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas with some assistance from CoCo himself on guitar. One of the great indie rock institutions, Bright Eyes, is set to release "The People's Key", its first new album in nearly four years, via Saddle Creek on February 15, 2011. That is the incendiary cover art above. In order to whet everyone's appetite for quavering vocal lines and borderline-histrionic vocals, Bright Eyes has released "Shell Games," the first single from"The People's Key". This track can be described in three simple words: Return. To. Form. The last few releases by Conor Oberst, the mastermind behind Bright Eyes, have largely fallen victim to [...]

Why don't my family and I live in Austin, Texas? Sitting here back home in Arizona just off the plane, I ponder that question. Austin: a city that live and breathes music. A city teeming with life and heart and soul and character. Just so different than Phoenix and its outskirts, where I've lived for the last 18 years. Yeah, I'll settle back into the rut and routine of everyday life, the job that supports my family (thank God for it), and hit some shows around town. But there's always Austin - like a soul magnet to my music loving [...]
After the release of Cassadaga in 2007, prolific singer-songwriter Conor Obert decided to put his Bright Eyes moniker on hold recording and releasing two albums under his own name with the Mystic Valley Band, as well as joining forces with Jim James, M. Ward and Mike Mogis to form the Monster Of Folk . Oberst is looking like he is now ready to revive Bright Eyes, which will likely be the last time, after telling Rolling Stone last year that he had plans to make one last album before retiring the [...]
We’re going off the deep end here with a bit of a different look at our next featured artist for our Austin City Limits Festival coverage. The band is a sort of super-group, made up of renowned musicians in the indie world, and we’ve borrowed some ideas from our great friends over at theManyFacesOf.com . Hopefully you enjoy this feature, and without further ado, we introduce you to The Many Faces Of Monsters of Folk . Follow the jump for more. [...]

The ideas of mixing Monsters of Folk 's brilliant harmonies and atmospheric arrangements with the cool, crisp beats of The Roots sounds too insanely awesome to be true. But, as Pitchfork points out, that's apparently what you'll hear on The Roots' forthcoming studio album , How I Got Over . According to an article in the latest issue of Rolling Stone , the two bands enjoyed their November late night collaboration on J-Fal so much so that they decided to hit the studio together to remake [...]

Here's a nice way to begin the weekend: the new video from alt-pop supergroup Monsters of Folk - M. Ward, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Conor "Bright Eyes" Oberst and producer Mike Mogus. As an general lover of all things Jim James/My Morning Jacket, I must admit that the Monsters Of Folk project (Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward, Mike Mogis) has left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Beyond their KISS cover band antics , I've barely felt any desire to pay attention. Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.) , however, is one of the more enjoyable tracks from their 2009 release...maybe mainly because it is pretty obvious that Jim James wrote the song and takes the lead on [...]

Jim James, Connor Oberst, M. Ward and the other guy, a/k/a Monster of Folk, have a new video out for one of my favorite tracks from their self-titled debut album (via Stereogum ). I've heard rumors that they may go round two with the super group and make another album. That will be down the road though, so don't hold your breath. In the meantime, enjoy this video. Also, get ready for a special edition reissue of the MOF album set for release on Record Store Day (April 17th). Think 2xLP blue vinyl! [...]
