Over the next 2 weeks [Monday - Friday] I'll be working up the list five acts at a time and telling the world why each [...]

Nearly a year ago to the day inspired by The Irish Times compiled best 50 Irish acts at that moment in time I posted my Top 50 of Irish Artists. The only stipulation was that the artist had to gig or release an album in the last 12 months prior to the compiled list. My choices last year were based on bands and artists who I connected with at the time. 1. The Swell Season/Frames/Glen 2. Terry Sutton 3. Martin Finke 4. Pony Club 5. Lisa [...]

The best thing about organising your own sessions night in a venue is the great sense of pride you get when everything about the night works. The major success story was the acoustic rock from The Whiskey Limbs. It was energetic and full of emotion and humour from a band with the right attitude. Their three part harmonies and country lyrics were just wonderful. The whole night helped to life my spirits to face the difficult year ahead. [...]

My Brother Woody is one of Ireland's best acts who released a wonderful debut late in 2007. It's brimming full of folk pop tunes similar in style to Elliot Smith or The Thrills. This week's Summer sample mp3 should be downloaded to bring the Summer into your lives and lift the gloom from the recession! When Summer Comes Around http://www.myspace.com/mybroth erwoody

I'll try to bring some alternative news to the Irish music blogsphere now! A Murder Plan with humour! " Murder Plan are a vaudeville alternative blues band who wink a hint of chaotic mania. With songs & styles encompassing rock, tangos, Balkan gypsy sounds, blues & jazz, they mix & match motifs like a drunken arsonist in a Parisian police line-up. The band is made up of Stephanie O' Keeffe (vocals), Dara Melinn (guitar), Paddy Lynch (drums), Donal Melinn (bass) and Cathal Melinn (piano). None of the Melinns are related to each [...]

Ruby Tuesday is my weekly feature where I blog about a new emerging talent on the scene. This week I'm blogging about a band who released their debut album in 2007. My Brother Woody's album 'It's a long way from that sort of thing you were raised' is to me a lost gem. I never realised how great this album is! Think of a Beach Boys inspired modern pop classic with great vocals and inspiring lyrics and you have some idea of what this album offers. If you like The Magic Numbers, Belle & Sebastian or Hal then My Brother [...]

There has been so much written about the demise of Road Records. The comments consists of fond memories, condolances, sadness, shock and support. Ideas have been floated about a benefit gig with Adrian Crowley and Delorentos publicly offering their support for the gig. The bands below have come out stating that any money from the sale of their stock will go directly to Dave & Julie. It may sound like a Father Ted catchphrase but My Brother Woody's debut 'It's a Long Way From That Sort of Thing You Were Raised' draws from an altogether different inspiration. Attempting to top the west coast harmonies of the Beach Boys is a dangerous preoccupation but in the hands of Pugwash's Thomas Walsh and My Brother Woody's Mike Cleare the results are almost always satisfying. 'Wish I
There were only ever four real contenders for this once the voting started. The top four albums below trail-blazed from day one and the others all languished behind. This year almost 200 of you voted for 61 different Irish albums with 354 votes counted in total. That's three more albums than last year. This blogs championing of the number one album below has left me in a slightly awkward position but perhaps it was inevitable. No doubt, there will be a few cynics who discount the results as a canard but this was a public poll [...]
