I'll admit that the first thing that made me listen to Lana Del Ray (real name: Elizabeth Grant) is the fact that, similar to myself, she was from a town in Upstate New York (real upstate, not Westchester). Although large geographically, we have very few big names to claim as our own so I was curious to hear about the girl who was making such a buzz on the cover of Q Magazine and in appearances on SNL. Needless to say the previously mentioned buzz was for a reason. Del Ray's voice [...]
Nancy & Billy Strange do their amazing arrangement of the Sonny Bono composition "Bang Bang" (or did Lee Hazlewood arrange it?). This is the only video I've ever seen of the great Billy Strange .
Another great Lee Hazlewood song and production.

You only live twice or so it seems, one life for yourself and one for your dreams…" Everybody is always talking about what they're going to do, what they want to become. Every year we have resolutions, new plans and countless ambitions. We have these grand fantasies about the things we'd like to do sexually, we dream adventurous but take a moment to think about how many of these thoughts and ideas come to fruition. What happens to those inspiring thoughts? For many of us they come and go, usually written off as something [...]

What is dubstep without Skrillex? Well, it might be smart to begin with an actual definition: it's a genre of electronic dance music notable for its bass drops and a common tempo of 140 bpm. To be more vague, it's basically electronic music with a "womp womp wobble." Assembled below are 10 of the best dubstep remixes posted on Indie Shuffle in 2011. Basically, this list is mostly clear of brostep. Instead, it's mostly composed by a number of remixes and reworks (which were excluded from our Best Remixes of 2011 intentionally). If [...]
OOOOHWEEE! I have some heat for you today. City Hall fave, DJ Wick-it the Instigator, has mashed up songs from Pulp Fiction with hip hop. It's brilliant. Enjoy. Bang Bang - Wick-it - Notorious B.I.G. and KRS One vs Nancy Sinatra - Love this mashup. The original Nancy Sinatra song is one of the best movie songs EVER. It is however from one of Tarantino's other movies, Kill Bill. Shaolin vs White Lotus - Wick-it ft RZA and Ghostface Killah [...]
A couple of years back a friend hipped me to the existence of a (then) recent documentary concerning the revered '60s L.A. session players known as The Wrecking Crew. Having already read most everything I could find dealing with crew's core representation of players I made a note to seek it out. It was not [...]

Late Summer (or as other people with seasons know it, Autumn) is my favorite time of the year, mainly because October brings my birthday and perfect weather (in LA, anyway, English October is meh) and Halloween - the best holiday of the year. I chose 11 songs for my first of three Halloween mixes to celebrate the best holiday there is. This one has some classics on it, some 60s goodness, some weird, wild, and warped sounds and, naturally, some flat out kickin' garage jams. Btw is it just me or is Boris Pickett hitting multiple bongs in the beginning [...]

Unlikely combinations sometimes yield the nicest surprises. LA native Phlo Finister has combined Mobb Deep's "Shook Ones" with Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang." Not only is Finister mashing up two genres, but she's blending two together tracks that are highly representative of the songs' respective decades, successfully bridging the gap between two generations. The soulful vocals accompanied by the beat from Mobb Deep's "Shook Ones" brings a bit of life to the former while giving a sense of heartbreak to the latter. This one lies somewhere between a remix and a mash-up. The vocals are original, in [...]

American boys & girls sharpened their number 2s and got back on the bus last week. The next generation of eager minds learning what we tell them and hopefully shaping a more elevated society in the years to come. This current crop of young musicians ready to start their own recycling plants seems to be marching forward with their very own Joan Of Arc, set to lead the charge with something old, something new, and something borrowed from across the fields of pop culture lore. The sassy poster girl for underground bedrooms is still the throwback darling [...]
Lana Del Rey has released the visuals and new single for the b side track 'Blue Jeans' which will see daylight with 'Video Games' on October 16th via Strange Records. 2012 will be a big year for Lana, until then watch the clip above.
A young Nancy Sinatra, seated with the ever-dapper Michael Caine, in 1965 at the Hollywood premiere party for Martin Ritt's film, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. While this photo has absolutely nothing to do with Sinatra's bubblegum rendition of the Statler Brothers "Flowers On The Wall," the two do tend to complement [...]

One of the side benefits of Quentin Tarentino's movies is that his soundtracks are also almost invariably awesome. He's got a decided soul / funk / hip-hop bent, and it works. I credit him for introducing me to The Firm, Joe Tex, and Bloodstone, among others. But I'm probably most grateful for getting turned on to "Cat People" - a true Bowie gem. Here are my favorites: Foxy Brown - Letter To The Firm Joe Tex - The Love You Save The Coasters - Down In Mexico Nancy [...]

somebody famous or nobody at all Sex sells . In America we often elevate the unworthy without any merit and celebrate salaciousness instead of faculty. Some people actually succeed without an interior, gaseous masses of cool air, cliché; and an appetite for self indulgence spawned by too much channel surfing . In a world on the brink of so much innovation [...]

So I've been stuck in the Dominican Republic since my gig on Saturday thanks to the ultra hyped junior hurricane Irene. The irony of being stuck in the Caribbean because of a hurricane in New York of all places is pretty funny but it's beautiful down here so I'm not complaining. Saturday at Praia down here was sick, the ShaveUrLegz.com did it up with the promotion and the place was packed and bumpin' all night. I've said it before and I'll say it again, these guys are doing something fantastic for Dominican culture and I couldn't feel more privileged be a part of it. There will be [...]
