Some things change, and some things stay the same. This month, I kicked off my ninth calendar year here in Nashville, which means it's been more than 100 months since the first person I met in town said " The Features are my favorite local band." And for nearly that same length of time - since the first time I heard "Walk You Home," and certainly since I first saw them perform at Exit/In - I've been able to say the exact same thing. It's not that other Nashville bands haven't earned [...]
It's been a little while since we heard from OtO favorites The Privates, but I still refuse to believe that they've called it quits - we've had to say goodbye to too many amazing Nashville bands in the past few years (see: And the Relatives and Hotpipes), so until it's officially official, I refuse to let them go. That said, I'm pretty excited to hear that Privates frontman Dave Paulson has a new project up his sleeve - going by the name of Norm . Last month he put the Norm EP up on [...]

Basically every time local boy Evan P. Donohue (Nashville's own Elvis Costello, as I tweeted yesterday), plays a show in town and I play a track on OtO to preview that show, I get it in my head that I'll play "Twickenham Garden," from his full-length Rhythm & Amplitude . And then I remember he drops the f-bomb in this tune, and I sigh and play something else (that something else is always awesome as well, but this track is particularly awesome). It's about time I shared this. [...]
MUSIC NEWS - Letters In The Deep , the new, compelling Cadillac Sky release (out June 8) embraces much broader classical, rock and pop influences, while harkening back to their roots of traditional bluegrasswhen albums were made with the players standing around a single mic. Lead singer/mandolin player Bryan Simpson explains, "These days, bluegrass is recorded in a separate room with people behind glass. And that's not the bluegrass that we love. The rawness is missing. We played all the songs just sitting around together, and at the core of every song is a truly [...]
I think I can safely call a guest DJ slot a complete success when I spend half the show laughing and the other half of the show rocking out to some really great tunes. Mike, Jay and Jereme from Apollo Up! joined me on Monday's Out the Other, and if you missed it you can go ahead and: Stream the March 15 edition of Out the Other They brought all kinds of awesomeness that was new to me - [...]
Aside from the fact that I'm learning that DJing after 10 p.m. means a section of my brain shuts off and I babble more incoherently than usual, I'm settling into my new OtO After Dark timeslot. Doing the show this week took real commitment though - about three inches of snow fell on my driveway in the space of the hour before I left the house, so I had to shovel my way out with my rain boots, and then after a treacherous drive, hike several blocks in the falling slush to get to the station. Yeasayer, Hot Chip and [...]
I have to say, my favorite guest-DJed shows are the ones where I go home at the end of the night thinking, "damn, I have to track down a bunch of those albums." Last night was completely one of those shows, and it was only the tip of the iceberg: not only did Patrick Rodgers play a ton of great tunes worth checking out, you can also check out what he's listening to on a daily basis over at A Record A Day . On Monday night we celebrated his 200th album review on [...]

Back in August, I got a super exciting message from Mike Grimes over at the Basement - "you heard of White Denim ?" YES, I replied - because not only had I heard of White Denim, over the course of several trips to SXSW, they had become one of my recurring Texas favorites. From the first Wild Turkey-fueled St. Patrick's Day set I saw them play in 2007, I knew the Austin band was something special - they were like this three-piece ball of frenetic energy, teetering on a balance beam of awesomeness [...]
There are a bunch of great shows going on this week that we talked about on Monday's show, so I thought it might be a good idea to get this playlist up in a slightly more timely fashion (I already missed the opportunity to give another plug for last night's Non-Commissioned Officers show, but you went, right?). Go ahead: Stream the November 2 edition of Out the Other We played a lot of great tunes on Monday night - from the new stuff (Jookabox, On Fillmore, The Lower [...]

Back at the end of September, my friends in the Holly House collective - And the Relatives , Caitlin Rose , Eureka Gold , Shoot the Mountain and Tristen - got together at Eastwood Salon to record a series of covers and a few original tunes for a project with American Songwriter . For the magazine's "On My Deathbed" series , they asked each of the Holly House performers what song they would like to hear on [...]
Favorite Nashville band? Check. Favorite song by favorite Nashville band? Check. Me and the sis, FRONT AND CENTER? C to the HECK YEAH. The Features "Thursday" from Lake Fever Sessions on Vimeo . And in true timing perfection, The Features will be hitting the stage at the Cannery Ballroom this Thursday night, along with The Whigs and The Dead Trees . I'm running out of ways to tell you how incredible they are live, so [...]

Sooooo one week from tomorrow, I turn 28. In honor of this less than momentous birthday and my increasing oldness, I thought this year called for a little bit of a birthday shindig. And crazy music girl that I am, I thought the appropriate birthday party for a DJ and music blogger would, of course, be a show. And you're all invited. Next Friday, September 18th (my birthday eve - my actual b-day is the 19th), I'll be partying it up with three kick-asstic local bands over in East Nashville at The 5 Spot [...]

pppp MUSIC NEWS - To celebrate the release of their World Wide Open album, Nashville countryprockers, pLove and Theft have teamed up with CMT for a cool giveaway. One L&T fan will get a chance to bring 7 of their friends along forpa tour bus ride to one of the band's upcoming concerts (who doesn't love a tour bus ride) !p Released last week, World Wide Open features the single, " Runawa y" which the group recently completed apvideo for, [...]
If you haven't had the chance to listen yet, you still have until tonight to check out the archive of last week's show, which featured Michael Eades (of Yewknee , YK Records and We Own This Town ) as the week's guest DJ. Go ahead: Stream the August 3 edition of Out the Other It was a fantastic show with a BUNCH of stuff I was unfamiliar with, plus a ton of material from YK Records artists. Here's the playlist, [...]
Are you in a band? Do you want to play this year's Next Big Nashville , which is going down October 7-11? Well, you have until Friday to apply over on American SongSpace . All it'll take is two songs and a small submission fee, and you'll be officially under consideration (and FYI, I'm helping out with the considering again this year as a part of the programming committee, so if you apply and know I already love your music, let me know so I can campaign appropriately). And an FYI - despite the name, [...]
I'm behind on posting playlists (surprise surprise) so I thought I'd hit you with two in one post, along with oodles of mp3s. The June 29 show was guest DJ-ed by Jon Rogers (it was a Harry Nilsson-ish show to promote the Harry Nilsson tribute at Mercy Lounge) and the July 6 show was hosted by D. Patrick Rodgers of the Nashville Cream, who curated last Monday's 8 off 8th. You have until tonight to listen to an archive of last week's show, and remember you can always click the icon at the top of the right-hand column to listen [...]

If you caught this Monday's show (I'll be posting the playlist later today with some mp3s), you already know about the fantastic event going on over at the Mercy Lounge tonight, which I fully expect all of you to attend. Me and My Arrow is both a tribute and a benefit show - a crazy number of fantastic musicians coming together to celebrate the music of Harry Nilsson , all to benefit Terry Price (from Nashville's own Oblio ), who was recently diagnosed with Bell's Palsy and hit with some serious medical bills (if you didn't [...]
Have you listened to last week's show with Aaron Hartley from Theory 8 yet? The stream is up until tonight's show airs, so get on it: Stream the June 22 edition of Out the Other We played all kinds of awesomeness, including a bunch of Theory 8 artists - even some new stuff from The Nobility (which is not in the playlist - oops - I'll have to update that later) and Eliza the Arrow. Check it out, and tune in tonight from 7-9 [...]
If you haven't noticed, I've been spending most of my time lately on my Bonnaroo previews page (less than two weeks to go!), which is why things have been quiet around here. But hopefully you've noticed that the Summer of Guest DJs is officially in full swing on the radio version of Out the Other, and this week I had my second round of guests. On Monday night, Madison Conger and Ryan Bruce of The Deli Nashville (along with their friend Elle) joined [...]
Before I scoot off to face my Monday morning, just a quick reminder that tonight marks the final 8 off 8th in the Road to Bonnaroo series that's been going down for the past few months. In case you've been living under a rock since March, Mercy Lounge has transformed three of their regular Monday night 8 off 8ths into opportunities for our favorite local bands to score a slot at Bonnaroo, which takes place next month from the 11th-14th right down the road in Manchester. Here's how it works - you show up to [...]
