Twenty Canceled Music Festivals: A Guide to the Dearly Departed

Twenty Canceled Music Festivals: A Guide to the Dearly Departed Here at Consequence of Sound , we live for music festivals. Whether the event of choice is located in a favorite city or on a field in the middle of nowhere, even the act of getting there inspires an unbearable sensation of anticipation, comparable to Christmas mornings from childhood. Over the past decade, the festival climate has changed from a handful of events to nearly every major market having a musical destination to call its own. While the likes of Lollapalooza and Sasquatch! sold out in record time and Austin City Limits followed Coachella's example and expanded [...]

End of Week Recap: March 28 – April 3

April 2011 got off to a "fine" start with the loss of LCD Soundsystem. One of the chief architects of millennial indie rock said goodbye this weekend with a string of larger-than-life shows in New York City. Perhaps T.S. Eliot was right. Maybe April really is the cruelest month. Then again, this is the time of year  when the music world starts to gain serious momentum. Nearly every artist still in existence decides to release new material and tour the world, major festivals finally reveal their line-ups, and just about anything's possible. It is spring after [...]

Nateva Music Festival 2011 canceled

While spring is the kick-off of the festival-going season, not everything is sunshine and good tunes for the festival industry. In an email sent to ticketholders this afternoon , the Oxford, ME-based Nateva Music & Camping Festival announced the cancellation of its 2011 festivities after promoters found themselves "struggling at every turn as we have tried to push forward with preparations for this summer." The festival, scheduled to go down August 4th-7th, would have seen performances by STS9, Thievery Corporation, Guster, Gregg Allman, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and more. [...]

Festivals in Brief: Pitchfork, Glastonbury, Beale Street

Beads weren't the only things given out to deserving crowds of festival fanatics this week. With many important announcements made (and no self-exposure required!) these prizes were even more rewarding. Exciting news of returns for Langerado, Outside Lands, and Northside Festivals left fans cheering in Florida, San Francisco, and Brooklyn, respectively. Brits can rejoice as well this week, with major additions made to the Glastonbury, Hop Farm, End of the Road, ATP Curated by Animal Collective, Lovebox, and Creamfields lineups. It looks like New Orleans won't be the only city rocking the south this spring as Memphis's Beale [...]

STS9, Thievery Corporation, Gregg Allman Band head Nateva Festival 2011

Before Nateva Festival came on to the scene last year, Maine had like one festival to its name - The Maine Lobster Festival - which, if I understand correctly , is some orgiastic dionisyian hellscape with literal tons of delicious crustaceans at the ready to consume. But the Nateva Music & Camping Festival will not be dwarfed by some coastal food frenzy. And because the 2010 inaugural Natvea  proved, all in all, a success , the fest is returning for another year and another round of jam-heavy headliners. Watch your back, you lobster-loving fucks, cause Natvea's crunchy [...]

Festivals in Brief: South by Southwest, Coachella, Pitchfork

Like most other folks, festival organizers decided to take some time off for the holidays. But they're back in full force this week, as evident by the massive amount of scrolling you're about to do. Welcome, once again, to Festivals in Brief. This week's most noteworthy items come in the form of rumors for the country's biggest and baddest weekend extravaganzas. With Coachella rumored to be unveiling its 2011 lineup sometime this month, expected acts continue to trickle out early, while word in Chi-town is that Pitchfork may again score an anticipated reunion. As for a few more [...]

Festivals in Brief: Sasquatch!, Voodoo Experience, South by Southwest

Wanna know how I know this week was huge when it came to festivals news? Because we can now say the Red Hot Chili Peppers won't be at Bonnaroo (but they will be at Summer Sonic), Portishead will return to curate ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror UK , the Foo Fighters are confirmed to headline Sasquatch! , and the Chemical Brothers have been tapped to play Ultra Music Festival . Plus, many more heavyweights are confirmed to headline Europe's many music extravaganzas, and the Bonnaroo and Coachella lineup rumors keep coming in. And all that's [...]

Nateva Festival will return for 2011

Following an inaugural launch which included the likes of Furthur, The Flaming Lips, moe., and Passion Pit, the Nateva Music & Camping Festival will return for a second rendition in 2011, Consequence of Sound has learned. Nateva 2011 will take place in Oxford Maine between August 5th and 7th, with an early-bird kickoff to be held on the 5th. Lineup and ticket information are still forthcoming, but we'll keep you updated. In the meantime, let's play a game of questions and answers: who would you like to see play Nateva 2011?

Photo Fest: Nateva Music & Camping Festival (Part Deux)

Photo Fest: Nateva Music & Camping Festival (Part Deux) This past weekend was another explosion of live music with Camp Bisco and Pitchfork Music Festival both going down; I've got to get collecting some of those links. In the meantime, you may have noticed that we're still sifting through all the awesomeness that went down a few weekends back on Fourth of July. I'm still knee-deep in High Sierra media, but today we finish up the Nateva coverage we had planned with this fantastic gallery from Diane Buxton (who helped us cover Mountain Jam). Read on for photos from Furthur, moe., The Flaming Lips and [...]

Festivals in Brief: July 7-14

In case you haven't already noticed, we here at CoS love a good festival . We also love great festivals, mediocre festivals, stupendous festivals and even the occasional "meh" (shoulder shrug) festival.  In short, festivals are our "thing" and if you are reading this, perhaps they're your "thing" too. So for you, the die-hard festival fan, or you the StumbleUpon user who has come across our humble site, we are resurrecting our Festivals in Brief feature. Each week we will compile the latest news regarding festivals (like interviews, recaps, and lineup additions), and squeeze it down into [...]

CoS End of Week Recap: July 5-9

This wasn't necessarily a dry week in the news department. Scroll down and you'll find that there's clearly plenty to report. There's new material from old favorites as well as hot-shot groups, and a number of stories developed interestingly (for better or worse). Then again, no major events marked the last few days. There was no Coachella or Bonnaroo. There were no sudden gains or losses in the industry. There was no drama. Of course, this will change very soon once the fifth installment of the Pitchfork Music Festival goes down in Chicago's Union Park next week. But until the hipsters (and [...]

Check out the JamBase photos and commentary from Nateva

Check out the JamBase photos and commentary from Nateva. We'll have some more coming soon. I'm hearing conflicting reports on whether or not the festival was actually a success or not and it definitely didn't really hit on a scale that we've seen infiltrating the media at all corners. We welcome it as a newcomer, but as the article above points out, they may have to make some changes to the way they approach festival promotion, marketing, and overall scheduling logistics. We'll call it a solid first-time effort at the very [...]

Clean Toilets and Long Jams: CoS at Nateva ‘10

Clean Toilets and Long Jams: CoS at Nateva ‘10 The Nateva Music and Camping Festival entered its first year with a few strikes against it. Strike 1: Price. The event cost almost as much as Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza with only a fraction of the bands. Strike 2: Location. Oxford, Maine isn’t in the middle of nowhere; it’s in the upper right hard-to-reach corner of nowhere. Near-Strike 3 (call it a foul): Bad press. The fest first bumped heads with a reporter circulating an erroneous report saying swamp mud had rendered camping areas unusable. Then a week later, the fest sent out a draconian photo [...]

Photo Fest: Nateva Music & Camping Festival

Photo Fest: Nateva Music & Camping Festival Photo by @FullerVisuals Our friend Kevin Fuller was on-hand for the inaugural Nateva Music & Camping Festival this past weekend and got some amazing photos. Oooh! Aaah! Fourth of July Live Music Roundup

Oooh! Aaah! Fourth of July Live Music Roundup Happy Birthday, America! While a good majority of the US population is gearing up for BBQ's and firework displays in the major metros or local suburban villages they frequent, live music fans across the country know that Fourth of July weekend brings some seriously fun festivals and concert events that simply can't be missed. I've rounded up the main five events that many of us crazy music fans will be attending this weekend, but as always this hardly scratches the surface for great live music happening across the country. If we missed an event, [...]

Nateva Festival: Let the Previews Start Rolling…

Nateva Festival: Let the Previews Start Rolling… I was recently asked for some thoughts on the Nateva Festival and how it's shaping up buzz-wise on a national scale. Here's what got printed... Nateva is a big deal nationally, said Justin Ward, editor of livemusicblog.com. "On the festival circuit, bands like Furthur, moe., STS9, She & Him, Grizzly Bear and the Flaming Lips are all a pretty big deal. For an inaugural fest to book a lineup like this could be called a big deal, yes," he wrote in an e-mail. "I'd say the buzz is that this has a potential [...]

Whoops! Nateva Accidentally Goes Too Strict on the Media, Then Immediately Fixes the Situation

Nateva almost messed up their promotional plans by restricting photographers too much. Check out how the festival promoter, Frank Chandler, responded... iClips.net Adds Nateva Festival to Couch Tour 2010

iClips.net just announced that they'll be broadcasting live from Nateva Festival over Fourth of July weekend. If you're somehow not seeing live music that weekend and maybe you're chained to your computer, this is a healthy alternative to the fear of missing out issues you'll be suffering from as a result. iClips.net is pleased to [...] Related posts: iClips Announces The Couch Tour iClips Announces Couch Tour 2010 Nateva Music Festival Single-Day Tickets on Sale

We're about two weeks away from one of the biggest live music weekends since, well, this past weekend with Bonnaroo 2010 and Phish's return to the stage.
