April 2011 got off to a "fine" start with the loss of LCD Soundsystem. One of the chief architects of millennial indie rock said goodbye this weekend with a string of larger-than-life shows in New York City. Perhaps T.S. Eliot was right. While spring is the kick-off of the festival-going season, not everything is sunshine and good tunes for the festival industry. In an email sent to ticketholders this afternoon , the Oxford, ME-based Nateva Music & Camping Festival announced the cancellation of its 2011 festivities after promoters found themselves "struggling at every turn as we have tried to push forward with preparations for this summer." The festival, scheduled to go down August 4th-7th, would have seen performances by STS9, Thievery Corporation, Guster, Gregg Allman, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and more. [...]

Beads weren't the only things given out to deserving crowds of festival fanatics this week. With many important announcements made (and no self-exposure required!) these prizes were even more rewarding. Exciting news of returns for Langerado, Outside Lands, and Northside Festivals left fans cheering in Florida, San Francisco, and Brooklyn, respectively. Brits can rejoice as well this week, with major additions made to the Glastonbury, Hop Farm, End of the Road, ATP Curated by Animal Collective, Lovebox, and Creamfields lineups. Before Nateva Festival came on to the scene last year, Maine had like one festival to its name - The Maine Lobster Festival - which, if I understand correctly , is some orgiastic dionisyian hellscape with literal tons of delicious crustaceans at the ready to consume. But the Nateva Music & Camping Festival will not be dwarfed by some coastal food frenzy. And because the 2010 inaugural Natvea  proved, all in all, a success , the fest is returning for another year and another round of jam-heavy headliners. Because we can now say the Red Hot Chili Peppers won't be at Bonnaroo (but they will be at Summer Sonic), Portishead will return to curate ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror UK , the Foo Fighters are confirmed to headline Sasquatch! , and the Chemical Brothers have been tapped to play Ultra Music Festival . Following an inaugural launch which included the likes of Furthur, The Flaming Lips, moe., and Passion Pit, the Nateva Music & Camping Festival will return for a second rendition in 2011, Consequence of Sound has learned. Nateva 2011 will take place in Oxford Maine between August 5th and 7th, with an early-bird kickoff to be held on the 5th. Lineup and ticket information are still forthcoming, but we'll keep you updated. In the meantime, let's play a game of questions and answers: who would you like to see play Nateva 2011?

This past weekend was another explosion of live music with Camp Bisco and Pitchfork Music Festival both going down; I've got to get collecting some of those links. In case you haven't already noticed, we here at CoS love a good festival . We also love great festivals, mediocre festivals, stupendous festivals and even the occasional "meh" (shoulder shrug) festival.  In short, festivals are our "thing" and if you are reading this, perhaps they're your "thing" too. This wasn't necessarily a dry week in the news department. Scroll down and you'll find that there's clearly plenty to report. There's new material from old favorites as well as hot-shot groups, and a number of stories developed interestingly (for better or worse). Then again, no major events marked the last few days. There was no Coachella or Bonnaroo. There were no sudden gains or losses in the industry. There was no drama. I'm hearing conflicting reports on whether or not the festival was actually a success or not and it definitely didn't really hit on a scale that we've seen infiltrating the media at all corners. The Nateva Music and Camping Festival entered its first year with a few strikes against it. Strike 1: Price. The event cost almost as much as Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza with only a fraction of the bands. Strike 2: Location. Oxford, Maine isn’t in the middle of nowhere; it’s in the upper right hard-to-reach corner of nowhere. Near-Strike 3 (call it a foul): Bad press.
