The Guggenheim Grotto brings their folk-pop to Rockwood on 03.26

The Guggenheim Grotto brings their folk-pop to Rockwood on 03.26 The Guggenheim Grotto , the Dublin, Ireland band that's (thankfully) now situated here in Brooklyn, have just finished recording their latest record and are set to play a couple shows around town to celebrate. After completing national tours with everyone from Ani DiFranco to They Might Be Giants, it'll be exciting to hear what's next for the folksy indie pop group. For any fan of The Pogues or Glen Hansard, listen to the band's airy approach to love's lessons hard learned) in latest single 'Her Beautiful Ideas.' The video (below) complains about how hard it is to get [...]

Weekly Feature: Lazyeyes plays Glasslands on April 5

Weekly Feature: Lazyeyes plays Glasslands on April 5 Brooklyn dream-pop quartet Lazyeyes show a lot of promise, even if they haven't put out a full-length album yet. With a freshly released debut EP under their belt and a 13th place in The Deli's list of the best NYC Emerging Artists of 2012 , this year could be one of growth for the band. Their music calls for the long summer days ahead even more than the Manhattan wind tunnels, and as warm weather approaches their songs will resonate more and more with the many dreamers out there (and in here). Lucy Sherman had the chance [...]

Weekly Feature: Chrome Canyon, live at Cameo on 03.28

Weekly Feature: Chrome Canyon, live at Cameo on 03.28 The work of Morgan Z. Whirledge, an architect of dense, multi-layered instrumental soundscapes who releases music under the moniker Chrome Canyon , is often said to resonate as though it was intended to soundtrack a piece of cinema - his soaring arrangements boasting the grand sweep of a Hollywood epic. A surprising addition to the Stones Throw family, Morgan not only offers the great soul, funk and hip-hop label something different, but even in the multi-tiered world of the NYC music scene, Chrome Canyon is a wholly unique entity. - Read Dean Van Nguyen's interview with [...]

NYC band on the rise: Belle Mare announce release + play Silent Barn on 03.28

NYC band on the rise: Belle Mare announce release + play Silent Barn on 03.28 Brooklynites Amelia Bushell and Thomas Servidone offer a seductive siren call with their band Belle Mare . Imploring you to travel back in time with them, their debut EP "The Boat Of The Fragile Mind" is set for release on April 9th. The title track shares a sonic kinship with the hushed and otherworldly soundscapes of other artists like Lia Ices and Cowboy Junkies, a band they manage to beat in the sparseness department. While Amelia's deep, crooning vocals range between Widowspeak's sleepy dreampop melodies and Beth Gibbon's intense retro stylings, her lyrics toy with mysterious themes, like [...]

Bridges and Powerlines announce new EP + play Public Assembly on 03.29

Bridges and Powerlines announce new EP + play Public Assembly on 03.29 There's this amazing mac and cheese place in Greenpoint that serves a variety of dishes, each named for a different Brooklyn borough. Some are spicy and burn going down, others are meaty and full of flavor. Well, stretching this analogy as far as humanly possible... electro pop group Bridges and Powerlines is a little bit like that mac and cheese. With every track of new LP "Better" named for a different BK hood, singer Andrew Wood moves through synths and dials to cover a range of dissonant, highly personal stories particular to his favorite borough. From the NYC record submissions: The Vontons

Whatever kind of violence these guys are up to, faceless Brooklyn band The Vontons like to keep things simple. With only three members, they've managed to create a huge and crashing sound in bulldozing tracks like the QOTSA - channeling 'Excursion into a Subway Tunnel,' or the rumbling acoustic blues of 'I'm Gone.' It's an intense little ride... the record is able to go several rounds with more than a few surprises throughout. I guess when the punches are dealt this loudly by such a small ensemble, each one has to land hard. - [...]

Graveyard Lovers release video for Ripe to Misbehave

Graveyard Lovers release video for Ripe to Misbehave What happens when you bring the blues of the deep south to the urban jungles of Manhattan? Passport issues? For Graveyard Lovers , there's an instant connection between Zach Reynolds' roots from Louisiana, and the city backdrop to drummer Tricia Purvis' rock roots. Think Deertick's angst with the rock posturing of arena bands like My Chemical Romance, and you've come close to the sound of their debut EP 'Manifesto." The video to "Ripe to Misbehave" is ripe with the tortured thoughts of anyone who's grown to hate Brooks Brothers. Watch it here , stream the song [...]

NYC band on the rise: Teen Girl Scientist Monthly plays Cameo tonight (03.21)

Made up mostly of NYU grads, Teen Girl Scientist Monthly compensate deficiencies in the band name department (we haven't managed to say it without stumbling on our tongue yet - but we are foreign) with their contagiously upbeat power pop and sassy front woman Morgan Lynch's presence. The band is playing Cameo tonight, it should be fun. This song was added to our SoundCloud playlist of emerging Alt Rock NYC based artists here .

From the NYC Open Blog: The Motor Tom plays Pianos on 03.30

From the NYC Open Blog: The Motor Tom plays Pianos on 03.30 A spanking new rock'n'roll band out of NYC (so new they don't even have press shots!), The Motor Tom is for people who: take the subway; played videogames in the 90s; don't get The Lumineers; like underpants (sic). They recently recorded some tracks with Gregory Lattimer (Albert Hammond Jr's "Yours to Keep") at The Rumpus Room, which will be released on NowRecords in the late summer. You can catch The Motor Tom at Pianos on Sat, Mar 30, joined by New Beard, Hey Anna and Sky-Pony. - (as posted in The Deli's [...]

Japan Soul debuts 'Plastic Utopia' from upcoming album

The music of Jason Paul has been through a lot of iterations since 2007 when he first started releasing material, so you really never know where he's headed next. His most recent foray to soul-inflected rock is Japan Soul . If you could picture Bruce Springsteen getting signed to make an electronic record at DFA, you might come somewhere within the vicinity of the classic club treatment Jason gives to his warm saxes and vinyl grooves. Check out newest jam 'Plastic Utopia' below. - Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Album of the Month: Parquet Courts' "Light Up Gold"

Album of the Month: Parquet Courts' "Light Up Gold" Touchstones come easily for Parquet Courts . While a lot of Brooklyn bands try desperately to shed historical reference, songwriters Austin Brown and A. Savage seem to revel in finding common ground with those that have come before them. Doing their homework, they've managed to flirt heavily with the noise-rock expectations of Sonic Youth, the late, angular punk of The Stranglers, and the slacker torch passed over from Pavement for their much-discussed LP 'Light Up Gold.' But there's also something uniquely New York in how they've channeled their frustrations through punk freakouts in 'Master of My Craft,' [...]

Chappo and Jupiter One's extra-marital affair: Fancy Colors

Chappo and Jupiter One's extra-marital affair: Fancy Colors A big chunk of the world became familiar with Chappo in 2010 when the Brooklyn band licensed their song "Come" (featured in their debut EP) to Apple for an iPod Touch commercial . In the following years the group released another EP and a full length in 2012, while Chappo's singer Zac, together with NYC based Jupiter One singer K, also started working on material for psychedelic side project Fancy Colors . K in the meantime had also started a new solo project called Kishi Bashi , who - together with Chappo - toured with [...]

NYC folk-pop group Freak Owls releases debut album "Taxidermy"

NYC folk-pop group Freak Owls releases debut album "Taxidermy" For Freak Owls , the city is a magical place filled with color and light... and nagging doubts hiding in the shadows at the end of long nights out with friends. As far as the band's concerned, this is exactly where you should be, and what you should be doing right now. At least, that's what singer/songwriter Josh Riccio thinks in the uneasy optimism expressed in 'Place to Be' or 'Optimistic Automatic.' A new generation's Iron & Wine, Riccio has curated his record's look, feel and release himself ('Taxidermy is out on his own label, Sing Engine Records), and [...]

Psychic Ills tours everywhere in support of "I Get By"

Psychic Ills tours everywhere in support of "I Get By" One of NYC's original psych-rock groups, Psychic Ills have been keeping Brooklyn weird since 2003. From their debut LP 'Dins' back in 2006, the band was always a cut above their peers. While other bands tend to throw everything they've got into a cosmic cauldron, Elizabeth Hart and Brian Tamborello seem to weave hypnotic grooves out of thin air. Using a soft touch on 'FBI' and getting down-and-dirty on 'I Get By' for latest record 'Hazed Dream' (Sacred Bones), their new sound has an ultra-economy of space that leaves plenty of room for hazy questions... and that's what [...]

Band on the Rise: Summer Hours

Band on the Rise: Summer Hours Summer Hours' first record couldn't have been better received. From Deli Mag's own glowing review to Alter the Press's ecstatic write-up, the band's come a long way with their breezy sound in a short time, especially considering their drummer Griffin Richardson has roots in noise rock. Latest single 'Close and Closer' keeps the waves crashing against the shore, as singer Rachel Dannefer keeps the energy going while still managing to sound entirely laid-back. Brooklyn Electro-Soul: Fanesha Fabra

Brooklyn Electro-Soul: Fanesha Fabra You know.. I don't think I listen to soul enough, so I guess I forget sometimes how involved a lot of this music can get. For chanteuse Fanesha Fabra at least, these are some dense and swirling pads and beats, fronted by her breathy and powerful soprano, her worlds are every bit as dense and powerful as anything coming from NY these days. Along with producer Chikara Aoshima, electro-soul jams like 'Take Your Time' and 'Transform,' the Brooklyn artist cools things down while boiling over with soul. - Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
