Friday B.E.A.F. at Spike Hill: Electro night with Manicanparty, Cultfever, Clementine & the Galaxy, Kiss Slash Crooked Smile, Lips and more.

Friday B.E.A.F. at Spike Hill: Electro night with Manicanparty, Cultfever, Clementine & the Galaxy, Kiss Slash Crooked Smile, Lips and more. After two folky bills on Wednesday and Thursday, Spike Hill will host a decidedly electronic, almost entirely lady fronted show on Friday June 07, featuring a lot of bands we are looking forward to seeing in a live setting. Headlining the night at 12.30 will be Manicanparty (pictured) - a band that has built a meaningful buzz without even having an official EP or LP out - with their angelic electro-pop contaminated by tribal and exotic influences. Right before them at 11.40, Cultfever will enterntain us once again (we booked them a bunch of [...]

Gondola debuts video + plays Spike Hill on May 29

"We Are the Map" by Gondola
We didn't highlight Gondola 's gentle folk pop more than two weeks ago, but the Brooklyn band is already giving us another excuse to write about them by debuting this cute video of the single "We Are The Map," which successfully blends two vintage visual concepts like Super-8 and stop motion. Here's an example of music and visuals that work perfectly together, enhancing each other. See if the charm translates live at Spike Hill on May 29.

NYC artist on the rise: Catey Shaw plays Spike Hill on 04.28

NYC artist on the rise: Catey Shaw plays Spike Hill on 04.28 Catey Shaw is truly her own person. She's been known to busk in subways with her lovebird Ketchup and her treasured ukelele. But more recently, she's been seen at the Washington Square club circuit, winning fans with her softly strummed nuggets of truth and life well lived. New song 'Run, Run, Run' (streaming below, video here ) finds Catey cast about on a host of issues that any struggling artist will relate to... and boy does she make that clear in the explicit uke jam. Check it out and see her when she plays Spike Hill Spike Hill [...]

From the NYC Open Blog: Alex Vans' new video + live at Spike Hill on 02.22 DC/NYC based powerpop band Alex Vans has just put out their official video for their new single "Chase the Night." The song, which powerpopaholic calls "a mixing of old influences skillfully into something fresh" is a three minute whirlwind narrating a night of debauchery and music in a Bushwick loft. It debuted live at Pianos on the lower east side a few weeks ago to a packed house and can now be found on youtube and alexvansmusic.com . NYC Artists on the rise: House of Blondes play Spike Hill on July 08

NYC Artists on the rise: House of Blondes play Spike Hill on July 08 Here come House of Blondes . A groove-based synth trio, the band owes a heavy debt to ambient purveyor Brian Eno. Singer John Blonde especially sounds like the innovator from 'Here Come the Warm Jets' in the slow build of 'Do It Yourself (Landscape).' As I understand it, Eno's ambient music works equally well when played in the background of a room as it does when closely payed attention to. This is the spirit behind tracks like 'Come Running'and 'Supermoon' (streaming below). These are songs that exist in their own universe of synth-generated noise and persistent drum [...]

Weekly Feature: Union St. Preservation Society plays Spike Hill on 01.06

Weekly Feature: Union St. Preservation Society plays Spike Hill on 01.06 It's not often you see the words "Brooklyn" and "Americana string band" used in the same sentence, but Union Street Preservation Society brings the two together seamlessly. Comprised of five members from all parts of the country, the jazz-infused string quintet introduces upbeat rhythms, perfect instrument pairings, and musicality that sings without words. Their EP Spring to Rust, brings back the American roots tradition, full of life and bluegrass bounce that can lift you up and mellow you out all in one album. Fronted by guitarist David Leiberman and rounded out with Alex Borsody, Sara [...]

Alt Folk from Brooklyn: Great Elk play CMJ at Spike Hill on 10.19

Alt Folk from Brooklyn: Great Elk play CMJ at Spike Hill on 10.19 Slowly, Great Elk 's songs creep from a position of distance and unfamiliarity to a timeless groove, like something your parents would play on the first cold day of fall. Starting out sparse and confused, Vocalist Paul Basile carries the band as they gently layer their sound, adding minimalist drum and bass, with an ever-weeping pedal steel guitar. Bryan Trenis's dramatic keyboards and, "approximate vegetarianism," help to portray the lonesome yet confident quality of Great Elk's sound. They have self- released two EP's, handing out limited editions to lucky show-goers this past February, and are currently on tour in [...]

From the NYC Open Blog: The Golden Age of Transit playd Spike Hill on 09.01

From the NYC Open Blog: The Golden Age of Transit playd Spike Hill on 09.01 Featuring Brooklyn singer/songwriter/guitarists Bill Bartholomew and Dave Klym - who have spent the last few years working together in Bartholomew's namesake band - The Golden Age of Transit introduces Klym as co-frontman and displays a fresh, minimalist approach to indie-pop. While guests like Bird Courage's Erik Meier, Brazilian vocalist Gabriela Rassi and world percussionist Quinton Gelderman add color and texture to a few of the tracks, the albums core is defined by Bartholomew and Klym's distinct guitar, vocal and drumming styles. Recorded in a Brooklyn brownstone that once housed members of Vampire Weekend and Dirty Projectors, The Golden [...]

Not Blood, Paint play Deli Northside show at Spike Hill on June 18

Not Blood, Paint play Deli Northside show at Spike Hill on June 18 I'm not sure who Tommy is, but he's been having a rough time recently. He hasn't been picking up the phone, he's bleeding everywhere, and that bitch called Destiny has broken his heart. Poor guy. But then, with this amazing an anthem to tell his story, how bad can things possibly be? Theatrical arena rock (think Meatloaf, Queen, Muse) has never been the easiest thing to pull off. You go too far into theater and things get ridiculous, too far rock and it isn't fun anymore... with Not Blood Paint , they got all your bases covered. Their [...]

The Aviation Orange play Spike Hill on June 16 + prepare for new release

The Aviation Orange play Spike Hill on June 16 + prepare for new release Alternative electro rock band The Aviation Orange is playing L Magazine's Northside Festival on June 16 at Spike Hill, starting off a summer tour from New York to DC to Cincinnati. Things look getting pretty exciting for them, and also their music offers a lot to be excited about: vocals comparable to Caleb Followill and Zooey Deschanel, a strong guitar section and ambient synthesizer accent. They're preparing to release their newest album "East of Here" on August 9 - see the band latest video here ). - Caitlin Clive

Yankee Bang Bang and Beast Make Bomb headline all female fronted Deli B.E.A.F show at Spike Hill on May 28. Imagine a lo-fi, electric version of Violent Femmes playing early Beach Boys songs with a female singer backed by a very imaginative guitar player. That's what I visualize when I listen to Yankee Bang Bang's "That's Love" (stream it below). That's Love by Yankee Bang Bang New York music fans will have an opportunity to witness live these guys at Spike Hill on Saturday May 28, when they will headline our NYC B.E.A.F. 2011 "Emerging NYC Women Stage" together with Beast Make Bomb , a new [...]
