When the defiantly explicit Club Motherfucker first began in this very venue now a decade ago, I wasn't anywhere near old enough to enter into these sorts of wide-eyed, openminded nocturnal shenanigans and nor was either member of tonight's central attraction, Blue Hawaii . Comprising Montréal native speakers Raphaelle Standell-Preston and Alex "Agor" Cowan, this trip represents the very first time the duo have washed up on British shores under this given guise and, having been active for quite some while already, this evening's UK début is long overdue. Their début-slash-sophomore depending on which member you request [...]
Monday? Innately awful. New BRAIDS ? Ineffably brilliant. They've no need to make Amends for anything in particular, not least as the ringleader of the Montréal troupe Raphaelle Standell-Preston already has our album of the year thus far under her belt in the inscrutably excellent form of Blue Hawaii sophomore, Untogether . It's an endeavour which has by now quite evidently had a not insubstantial impact upon her more widely renowned, and with that revered escapades alongside the blokes of BRAIDS, and I say blokes as opposed to guys as they've recently parted ways with [...]

I've been quietly saying to myself for months now that it's about time we had new music from Montreal quartet Braids , but I must've been a naughty boy because the music Santa never bore any Braids-related gifts. That is until now, as he just emptied his sack all inside my ears. The band are releasing a new album this Autumn (as yet untitled) via Arbutus Records and on June 11th you can get the below track "Amends" and "In Kind" on some sweet 123 wax [...]

BRAIDS "Plath Heart" "Then out slides the Golden Baby With my stark hair Eating men like then air Not your eyes just the beating of a Plath Heart Shooting in the wet dark I poke and turn you smoke and yearn" While working on DHM and constantly looking for new music, I discovered a skill of mine I never knew [...]

ALBUMS OF THE YEAR #5 BRAIDS - NATIVE SPEAKER The debut record from Canada’s Braids is full to the brim with math-rock drum beats, disorientating delay noises, Raphaelle Strandell-Preston’s buoyant, airy vocal and extended AC-type psychedelia. I caught them opening up for The Antlers in Spring; there, as on record, they command attention. The rhythm is constantly intense, and sporadically changes, settling in to groove after groove but snatching away any complacency right as it forms. Native Speaker is a masterpiece of modern psychedelia and its chattering synths, vocal layering and the [...]
I'm so frequently at a loss for words when it comes to Braids . I know I'm not the only critic to feel this way; most other outlets have struggled to capture Native Speaker within the confines of written and spoken language, but that's exactly why this record is so special. It may seem like a cop-out to say “you’ve just got to hear it for yourself,” but there's no better way for me to put it. Native Speaker isn’t a straightforward album, and it's definitely not for everyone. It's a record that demands patience [...]

SGTMT
Tweet Here at SGTMT headquarters we decided that our albums of 2011 list should be a collaborative effort. We're a team y'know. Sadly Luke has slumped out on the sofa in front of re-runs of Top of the Pops from the 90s, we've tried to stir him from his stupor but our efforts have been in vain. Nevertheless; Matt, Tim & Tom are stepping up the plate and we've agreed to each nominate 4 albums for our list of the 12 best albums of 2011. Me [...]

I got the chance to see Born Gold and Braids sell out the Horseshoe last Friday and it was like the matrimony of two souls- not quite alike, but perfectly harmonious. First and foremost, they're friends, and huge supporters of one another's art. I actually first saw Braids perform with Born Gold when they were Gobble Gobble in a basement in Toronto last summer, and their show at the Horeshoe saw visible growth in how far both bands have come. It's extraordinary to see what a [...]

Born Gold sure knows how to make a slow song into a dancefloor hit. They just remixed their good pals Braid 's track Native Speaker from a 8 minute slow song into a almost 3 minute dance of fun song. Thanks to Prefix for premiering the remix. Have a listen to Native Speaker (Born Gold Remix) . Don't forget Braids with Born Gold and Pepper Rabbit will be in Ottawa tomorrow night at Babylon Nightclub. I wonder if any members of Braids will be [...]

The 2011 Polaris Muisc Prize gala is upon us. This being Soft Signal's first year meant it was my first go-around with the prize, and the first time people actually asked me how I thought this would all play out. I kind of kept out of the way of it, not having the time, experience, or language to properly talk about these albums in the context of the most important music prize in the country. Aside from my early picks with the long list —which weren't really predictions so much as who I'd [...]

Imagine a wave rolling over your body, so delicate in form, so precise in its constitution, powerful and awesome, a true reminder that great splendor can be found in the subtlest sensations. This wave, this magnificent flourishing wave, builds and collapses, continually rising and falling to produce the fine aesthetics of ages long gone. But what is this force, this chilling flow of sparseness and frailty that spreads over your body to confirm your existence by proving you can feel? Braids, man, Braids. What can be said about a group that defies expectations, not only with their admirably layered melodies [...]

We owe the rise of the "Shoegaze" and "Dream Pop" genres to the 1980s UK alt rock & punk scene. Not without coincidence, this crossed paths with the rise of the synthesizer in rock music. The term "Shoegaze" arose from the musicians' practice of staring at their effects pedals during concerts, rather than moving around: it started as a pejorative term, then became a welcome classification. Its ethereal, electronic "dreamscape" textures were dismissed by some as "ambient pop," due to a perceived lack of melody and instrumental drive. I certainly think this characterization applies to some bands, particularly Brian Eno's [...]

Here is the third album that I am reviewing the shortlist nominees in alphabetically order. It is Braid 's Native Speaker. This album was released in January and reviewed back on Janurary 14, 2011 . Since it's release, the band has gain alot of buzz and critical praise outside of Canada. It is no surprise that they were able to make it on the Polaris Prize Shortlist. Another diverse band that is in the running. At first I couldn't describe what their music was [...]

We told you about Purity Ring’s half of the split 7” they have coming out with equally talented Braids , and now we can hear their new jam. Sticking to the same formula which made Native Speaker such an interesting, surreal listen, the song floats patiently at well over 5 minutes, enough time to always let Raphaelle Standell-Preston explore everywhere she wants to go. That’s a good thing as her vocals are consistenly incredible. This is in perfect contrast with “Bellispeak” and should serve as quite the 1,2 punch.
I was so happy when Braids announced they were going to be doing a split 73 single with Purity Ring , because it meant I finally would have a chance to write something about them here on Soft Signal. It seems to be a theme of mine to operate three-to-six months behind everyone else on talking about all the great new, emerging artists, and Braids was no exception to that. I caught up with their Polaris-nominated Native Speaker only a a few short months ago, and by then posting anything about how great this act [...]
