With Gingrich's devastating Floridian loss, once again I feel justified for naming this hardcore festival news roundup column Pit Romney. Here's what's new... Don't sell the Midwest short, as Chicago-based fest The Rumble has declared much of its 2012 lineup, with classic headline acts Negative Approach and Murphy's Law topping a bill with scene favorites [...]

by BBG The Damned @ F F F Fest Day two of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 was definitely more taxing than day one (pics here and here ), in part due to the unrelenting dust storms. But despite a case of brown lung and some fatigue, it was still a blast and I managed to catch most of the sets at the Black Stage, as well as select shows at the Blue Stage and even popped [...]
Long Island hardcore band Kill Your Idols put the "punk" back in hardcore punk on their debut LP album "No Gimmicks Needed". Released back in 2000, (when screamo and emo were reaching their prime), "No Gimmicks Needed" describes what the band and album are all about. The music is tight, aggressive, and intense with the crunching guitars and the barked lyrics. The band often flirts with
Rock and roll music is used by Satan in deception. People are led astray and they will no longer respond to the Bible. These people become distant from God, worldly, and immune to Scriptural correction. They become obsessed with their love of Satan's music and will defend it unto the destruction of their souls! Rock [...]
If my mp3 player was able to keep track of play counts, it would tell you the amount of times I've listened to the Cobra Lung / Piss boys split has to be nearing triple digits. It's just so damn good and also a quick listen so I can always squeeze it in (that's what she said). For those who don't know, Philly/NJ's Cobra Lung plays hardcore in the veins of Negative Approach, and they bring 5

Not long ago I picked up on a gig announcement that Easy Action would be playing The Acheron in Brooklyn on Monday, November 15th...yay! I contacted them immediately and inquired if they'd be interested in playing live on the Fun Machine on the next day; Tuesday the 16th. And so it was. The band, with John Brannon of Negative Approach and Laughing Hyenas on vocals, has a perverted blues-punk sound that is so mesmerizing you could set your own face on [...]

This week is Riotfest in Chicago - punk rock taking over da city, 33 years later! Look at this schedule of rock above! Bad Religion, Articles of Faith, Jello Biafra and his Guantanamo thing, old school faves Smokin' Popes, Subverts and Negative Approach and a load of other bands. Wish I were there. But you Chicagoans know who you are! Have fun! Post video. A little closer to home, here in Phoenix (Tempe), there's a killer double bill at the Clubhouse . Street Dogs features Mike McColgan (original [...]

I think I got ripped off with my local access channel when I was growing up. From what it sounds like, everybody else's public station had low-budget and hilarious shows that were put on by locals who had a lot of free time. Aurora, IL had Wayne's World , broadcast from a neighborhood basement. Monterey, CA plays student films from the local college. And Dearborn, MI, just ten minutes away from downtown Detroit, had Why Be Something You're Not, a show that broadcast live punk shows filmed in a room that resembles somebody's unfinished basement. This was [...]
Earlier today, Punk Island held its third festival on Governor's Island. As I hadn't made it out to any of the prior Punk Island shows, I was somewhat mentally expecting the chaos of the 'Rock Against Reagan' shows from the 80's but was pleasantly surprised. The festival was very well run and had a relaxed vibe. Even the pile-on/shout-along moments of Negative Approach's set didn't have the violent overtones that seemed to be part of the scene in the 80's. The only off-putting moment to the day [...]

So what was your entre into the world where denim, leather n' demonology reign supreme? Where you adore the goat and sway to the symphony of deee-struction? Every man (or woman) has a tale to tell. Here's mine. You're gonna hear a lot of names you might be unfamiliar with, especially if you're a member [...]

TUCUMAN ARDE: COUNTER INFORMATION AND THE CREATION OF AESTHETIC AND CULTURAL MILITANCY If there is one thing in my short visit on this planet has taught me, is that the relationship between art and politics is a pretty much a hot mess on your chest. Some would say that without politics there can be no art, and others would take the vice-a-verse stance and tell you that without art - politics would suffer as well. I find that art and artists that wear the skin of the liberal activist are amongst some of the most [...]
Along with the likes of SST, Chicago based label Touch & Go was the citadel of hardcore / punk / noise rock in the 80s, with such luminaries as Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Killdozer and Laughing Hyenas filling the label's roster. Unlike SST, however, the label didn't gave up its original direction and by the end [...]
In remembrance of Touch and Go's demise (er, temporary downgrading), here's a short 'n' sweet one from Negative Approach , from Detroit in the early 80s. Yes, the sound quality is unsurprisingly bad, but the historical value and push-moshing make up for it.
If you're in New York, set your dial to 93.9FM/820AM Monday at 2pm; you can also listen live on the web on the WNYC site . I will be on Soundcheck to discuss why it's so hard to find women who rawk hard these days. Oooh, incendiary! Speaking of rawk, it erupted as if from some broken sewer pipe at Southpaw this past Wednesday when the reunited Negative Approach hit Brooklyn. And hit it did. Holy cow! NA was a classic Detroit hardcore combo that formed in 1981 and released an album on Touch & [...]
