Frank Yang One of the music stories of 2011 was the return of Kate Bush from whatever misty English castle she'd been hiding in since releasing her last album, Aerial , in 2005. It began with the curious remix/renovation project Director's Cut in the Spring, but was followed by a proper collection of new works this Fall in 50 Words For Snow . And there was much rejoicing throughout the land. To mark this - and also [...]
I can't believe it's already December! The last few months increasingly have felt as if they were picking up speed, I don't even feel like November happened. That's time i guess. I think you'll be happy with this weeks selection, I know I am and that usually translates well. . . Download: Jesse Payne - [...]

Frank Yang A few songs into M832s performance at Lee's Palace on Friday night, frontman and mastermind Anthony Gonzalez stepped to the mic and said something to the effect of, "thanks, this is our first time here". Which was perplexing as it was far from their Toronto debut - it was their fourth time here, the last time being not THAT long ago in November 2008 . It wasn't even their first time playing the venue, as it was where they made their actual first local appearance back in 2005 . [...]

Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: zip download (right-click, save as). Lach is the man behind the Antihoot, the New York open stage which gave rise to the term and the movement called Antifolk . People bandy the word about so much these days it's almost become as nebulous as the term 'indie', but it had a very specific origin and a very specific meaning back at the beginning. Last year Lach brought the Antihoot to the [...]
Blogophilia refers to the series of mixes that were developed from promotional mp3s found on different music blogs. As we've grown, we've come to rely less on other blogs and more on what we're sent that we review or feature. We receive a lot of requests to repost old Blogophilia mixes, and have to kindly refuse because of space issues. Well, that's going to change. This summer, we'll feature 2-3 Blogophilia posts a week until we're current. If you've followed this site, you'll know we already maintain links [...]
My friend Eran had forwarded me the myspace page of Portland, OR musician Kele Goodwin. Goodwin had released his debut album Hymns in the local Hush Records label (also the home of Laura Gibson who shares some backing vocals in the album, and also the wonderful Nick Jaina), last September. I hadn't listened to the full album [...]

Featuring Garrett Klahn (Texas is the Reason) and John Herguth (House & Parish, The Love Scene) and a rotating cast of members, Atlantic/Pacific hit the road this Fall for their very first US tour in support of their debut album, Meet Your New Love - out now on No Sleep Records. Formed in the summer of 2008, Atlantic/Pacific have been honing their sound ever since with performances in NY and Europe, sharing the stage with Mercury Rev, Neil Halstead, Chamberlain, and Walter Schreifels, including performances at the UK's TRUCK Festival two years [...]

Filed under: News , New Music Throughout their career, Radiohead have showcased their own remixing talents as well as turning over their vast catalog to other artists for the same purposes. Now, the band's drummer Phil Selway is giving fans the chance to do the same on a song from his solo debut, 'Familial.' In conjunction with Indaba Music , potential remixers can create their own version of his song 'Beyond Reason.' The top [...]

I've been unabashedly reveling in every morning where we evade the chill for one more day, where I can ride my bike to work in a skirt and short sleeve shirt, where I can sit on the porch after dinner and not feel that mercury drop and the gooseflesh form. But hey - all that stopped early this week, with a final burst of indian summer and the subsequent autumn arrival. Time for scarves and cider and music that makes me feel thoughtful, wistful, warm. Once the inspiration hit, this mix was almost harder than the summer [...]

There's something in bedroom recordings that I really like. It's a fusion point of the artist with his songs, his natural surroundings, his familiar view outside of the window, and the freedom to record in the exact time it feels right for him. Isbells is essentially Belgian songwriter Gaëtan Vandewoude who played in couple of bands [...]

The early 90's was a period in rock journalism where every hack seemed anxious to invent a genre, "Shoegaze" being the biggest contradiction of them all, covering the dream-pop resonance of Chapterhouse to the conventional pop-jangle of Revolver. Some shared a sound (Ride, Swervedriver, Curve) due to sharing a producer, Alan Moulder practically a staffer at Creation Records. Others were lumped in because they just looked the part – Catherine Wheel, Pale Saints, even Adorable. Whilst the ethos was naïve (the moody videos, the gloriously over the top "our middle class lives are hell" lyrics), the music was mostly wonderfully [...]

LA based band Letting Up Despite Great Faults had released their debut LP in late 2009. This relativley new electro-pop band, brainchild of Mike Lee is a intersting mesh between the lo-fi/shoegaze/whispering style of the many turns Neil Halstead took during his long career with Slowdive , then Mojave3 , then his solo career, along with 80's influences like New Order , and Bloody Valentine . [...]

Last.fm It's been a long time since there's been a live music throwdown of any kind at the city's most picturesque and moderately inconvenient venue, the Toronto Islands. The 2009 edition of the almost-annual Islands concert was canceled thanks to a combination of the Toronto Indy and sluggish ticket sales, so excepting a private frosh week event last September, the last time the throngs gathered on Olympic Island was V Fest 2008 , and that ended with the ignoble thud of Liam Gallagher getting knocked on his ass. 2010 seems set on making up [...]
