Not a review (as i don't have the album, yet) but more of a heads up that Elephant Micah (who i last wrote about here ) has a new album out on 31st January. It's available on vinyl too and you can order if from his webpage here as well as grab a free track called 'If I was a Surfer'. If this song is representative of the album then we're in for a real treat. Amazing song from one of America's most gifted talents. He never releases anything less than brilliant as far as i'm concerned.
One of the more outstanding January releases catching our attention this new year is Chairlift 's Something. Even its album title, which refuses to define it as a single concept, acknowledges the sophomore effort's diverse tracks, stretching from funk-inspired pop of witchy sentiments to acoustic bed warmers. As undefinable as the album is, it stands as a defining moment in the band's career - of not needing to adhere to one certain sound but having fun with trying on different ones. Cape Dory , the debut LP from married couple/nautically nectarous group Tennis dropped earlier this year with track after track of sweeter than fiction, sailing with no care in the world-type tunes. They announced a follow-up album - Young and Old - which was produced by Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney. Oh, and the album is dropping on Valentine's Day 2012. Go figure. How Lucky Jim is not a household name by now is beyond me. I can't fathom it all. Having wrote about him here 3 years ago and interviewing him for his outstanding album True North , i was convinced that his time had finally arrived. In fairness it should have been with his previous releases when he was signed to Skint records that he became a household name but for whatever reasons it just didn't happen regardless of those albums receiving great reviews across the music press. Remember when we announced Yuck's deluxe edition release of their self-titled debut and introduced a new track called "Cousin Corona" ? These guys are so good that one disc just simply isn't enough. Two weeks before its official release, the new Drums album Portamento is streaming over at 3VOOR12 . We liked the first single " Money " so much that we expected nothing less than amazing from these new wavers on their sophomore effort. The last time I saw Oberhofer was April, which was almost exactly a year since the time I saw them before that. Within a year, [Brad] Oberhofer has become so much more confident on stage, honing a sonic vibrancy that only so few artists are gifted with. Needless to say, I was blown away. Despite the maturation, Oberhofer is still driven by youthful desperation and the impatient scrambles that come out in seemingly uncontrollable yelps. After hearing what was possibly the most heartbreaking song from Girls , the duo follow up with a sunny number called "Honey Bunny." It's got surfer swirls, racing drums, and a beachy vibe. But it ain't a Girls song if it's not a little self-deprecating as well. D'aww, Chris, I love your bony body and dirty hair and the stuff that you say. Turns out Twin Sister 's new song "Gene Ciampi," is NOT sung in a foreign language, as I had initially thought. This sounds like it would make really great thrifting music though (is that a thing?). It makes me want to go vintage shopping or something, I don't know. Whatever Twin Sister makes you want to do, these guys keep bringing fresh, retro chic tunes to the table and we can't wait for their debut album to finally drop.
