"Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?"

Today is the last of the warm days at least through the weekend. The weatherman called the weekend temperature an Arctic blast, but right now the temperatures are predicted to be in the low 202s with some rain turning to snow and accumulating as many as 3 inches. I laughed when I reread this and saw I had written "as many" as 3 inches. That's only a bit more than a dusting in New England or it used to be. This year we all seem to have refined our definition of Arctic and cold and snow storms. Right now it [...]

The Stepkids listed by Radiohead as "band they are listening to"

The Stepkids listed by Radiohead as "band they are listening to" Most musicians dream to to be recognized and praised by their own musical heros, and that very admiration often triggered their ill advised decision to try the rockstar route. This dream suddenly came true for Brooklyn and CT based The Stepkids when, on January 28, none other than Radiohead's Thom Yorke posted this blog on the band's site. Since we picked these guys for our cover in our Fall 2011 issue of The Deli, we also feel like a little dream has materialized... MAYBE THOM YORKE READS THE DELI!?! Here's the song mentioned in the Radiohead [...]

Onslo -- Quartumdimensio ᴁdificium

Wow. Onslo's Quartumdimensio ᴁdificium is a barrage of noise—but what fantastic noise it is! It's as though Karl Alverez and Bill Stevenson, the rhythm section of the Descendents and ALL, joined Weezer and started covering Frank Zappa tunes. This record is fast and hard with angular edges and bombastic choruses. Its 7 tracks clock in at well under 15 minutes so the only drawback is that it's over so damn quick. With its mix of jazz and punk, prog and indie it's hard to tell if these guys are serious or not but the sheer audacity [...]

In Like Lions -- Through Red & Blue

In Like Lions -- Through Red & Blue Making a solid record is like creating a "perfect storm" of music—all the instruments must be precisely aligned and in time, with the vocal performance cutting through and above the instruments, tying the whole project together. In Like Lions latest album, Through Red & Blue , harnesses all of those qualities to forge a truly impressive collection of pop songs. The record, set to drop this Valentine's Day, is a unique combination of Top 40 pop sound, soul, and R&B, with a splash of rock n' roll added for good measure. The album opens with an ethereal, [...]

"Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice; Pull down your pants, and slide on the ice."

Today is warm and sunny with a sharp blue winter sky. I woke up earlier than usual but lolled a bit until Gracie rang her bells to go outside then I came downstairs, let her out and started the coffee. When I came back inside from getting the papers and something from the car, the house had the wonderful smell of fresh coffee. I could barely wait for that first cup. Today is chore day. I have a list; I always have a list. Yesterday I did nothing so today I expect to be industrious, but I never [...]

From the Deli's Open Blog: Tiny Pupils

From the Deli's Open Blog: Tiny Pupils Tiny Pupils is an indie rock/pop musical project formed around songs written and produced by Kevin Gallagher, with the support of close friends. Self described as a project "typified by verses, choruses, introspective lyrics, infectious melodies, trite rhymes, and DIY/home production", Tiny Pupils' primary influences include groups like Pavement, Yo La Tengo, or Bright Eyes. The project is now based in Amherst, Massachusetts, formerly Boston. A professionally produced music video for 'Charm Song' will be released in 2012 and a third album is currently in the works. - Post your own blurbs on the Deli New England's Open Blog [...]

Bunny's A Swine -- All Day, Alright

Bunny's A Swine -- All Day, Alright Sometimes I wonder if all musicians have truly lost their minds and I worry that dub-step and "wobble-bass" will overtake the music world like a modern-day Bubonic plague. In the midst of these thoughts, I occasionally hear a record that pulls me back into reality and reminds me that not every musician has gone insane and that people are still perfectly capable of making rockin' music. All Day, Alright , the newest release from Bunny's A Swine , is one such record. Bunny's A Swine manages to capture a 90's indie rock vibe a la Modest [...]

[Introducing] – The Poison Oaks

[Introducing] – The Poison Oaks Tweet This winter has been kind of a bummer. Where I'm at, we haven't experienced even one good snow. I really love winter. Not so much being cold all the time, but the feeling that you get while listening to some great winter music. Last year, for me, it was Fleet Foxes . There's something about waking up to a winter wonderland outside, making coffee, and listening to some great cold weather-inspired albums. Needless to say that around this time, I start looking for music [...]

Kristen Opstad -- Fear of Swimming

Kristen Opstad -- Fear of Swimming Somerville alt-folk singer-songwriter Kirsten Opstad 's latest release Fear of Swimming bursts with plucky, quaint acoustic tunes. Following a few solo albums as well as a release from The Crazy Exes from Hell -- the folk-punk band consisting of her and Steve Subrizi -- Fear of Swimming is Opstad's first professional full-length collection. Opstad, like many artists, turned to Kickstarter to help collect funding for the project, and she kept friends and fans updated on the fundraising progress as well as the recording process itself on her blog. While Kickstarter allots [...]

Mission 0 -- Bruises on the Map

Mission 0 -- Bruises on the Map There is a strange and almost contradictory type of freedom that comes with the label of pop music. While the title is sometimes thought of as the enemy and opposite of free expression, there are those who take the term as a simple standard of accessibility in their art, a sort of mantra that says "Art is anything that makes people enjoy life more." In this new age of free media, electronic everything, and D.I.Y ethics becoming more of a necessity than an ethos, pop music has been the favorite vehicle of a large caravan of duos combining programed loops [...]

"It looks like something out of Whittier's "Snowbound,"' Julia said. Julia could always think of things like that to say."

About 8 or 9 inches of snow fell yesterday. The stuff is pretty, no question about it, but pretty never lasts long enough. I got plowed out last night by my factotum but a bit more fell, mostly from the ocean effect. Because it was warmer earlier this morning, the new snow melted off the walkway, the car windshield and the roof. Icicles now hang off the roof edge. They look like teeth needing orthodontia. It's cold, only 31°, and the sky is gray cloudy. I'll watch the Pats play the Ravens this afternoon. If I had tickets [...]

Amory Sivertson -- Human

Amory Sivertson -- Human Amory Sivertson's latest release, Human , is a wonderful mix of pop melodies, soothing piano lines and beautiful vocals. Sivertson, an Emerson-college student, is signed to the student-run Emerson record label, Wax on Felt Records . Drawing on influences from such artists as Feist, Regina Spektor and Ingrid Michaelson, Sivertson manages to craft an album that is at once familiar and yet entirely unique and original. The opening track on the record, Wrap My Arms , is reminiscent of a blues number, infused with gospel and soul. The song, an acapella-style round, [...]

BR1GHT PR1MATE -- The Reality Chipmusic Love Industry [REMIXES]

BR1GHT PR1MATE -- The Reality Chipmusic Love Industry [REMIXES] As seen on FOX News in 2010 for a live performance, BR1GHT PR1MATE are one of many artists riding the 8-bit nostalgia wave with their dance-y chiptune style. The Boston duo, made up of singer Lydia Marsala and video gamer James Therrien, currently has a smattering of EPs, covers, video game soundtracks, and other odds and ends, including The Reality Chipmusic Love Industry [REMIXES] , the August, 2011 release. In April 2011 BR1GHT PR1MATE released The Reality Chipmusic Love Industry , a six-song album about "hope, death, sci-fi, businessmen, cooking and reality television," according [...]

The Gang of Thieves -- Dinosaur Sandwich Party

The Gang of Thieves -- Dinosaur Sandwich Party No need to worry about bland, generic tunes here. If the Darth Vader-esque monologue at the beginning of Raw Milk doen't grab your attention, hopefully the funky riffs do. If not, check your pulse. With its colorful album cover displaying exactly what the title says, The Gang of Thieves ' Dinosaur Sandwich Party appears to be the kind of party to end all other social gatherings. The Burlington, VT band came together in early 2009, and currently the band boasts a 50 percent chance of dreadlocks. Dinosaur Sandwich Party [...]
