Nice tune. Nice masks. Crap video:

Those were heady times, 1978. Punk rock had encroached on Los Angeles' power-pop scene; bands who would come be known as New Wave appeared; and in Chinatown the stage was being set for a venue rivalry between Madame Wong's and the Hong Kong Cafe. It was then that a five-piece out of Orange County, the Furys , starting making the rounds. Fronted by songwriter Jeff Wolfe, the Furys cultivated a pop-punk sound that has been described as somewhere between the Weirdos and the Knack. ( Their ex-manager recalls a dust-up between the Fury and the Knack at the Troubadour [...]
Tweet Lapins. We all knew that already right? You don't? Oh. Come on people, brush up on your language skills. Lapins is French for rabbits. HA HA. French For Rabbits (we'll refer them to as Lapins henceforth cos we're funny. FUNNY), are from New Zealand and are a boy and girl duo (Brooke Singer and John Fitzgerald) capable of stunningly simple, yet spine-tingly moving ballads and laments. Goat is a striking tale of stubbornness and defiance. The poison of many a relationship. The song starts with the moving yet disheartening [...]

On his latest single, "Strandbar (disko)" (that's English for "beach bar"), Norwegian producer extraordinaire Todd Terje takes us for a thrilling, intergalactic, disco ride. (Yes, please imagine gettin' down, platform shoes, Mai Tais and all, in space.) Though it clocks in at nearly nine minutes (!), the futuristic number never lets up, but actually gradually grooves even deeper and harder as its various elements — the full-forced funk, blazed lasers, percolating piano — take turns leading the way. Terje keeps on pushing and giving, but once you're drawn in, we suspect your feet won't mind all that movement. [...]

Austin blues rockers Black Joe Lewis will release their latest album, Electric Slave , on August 27th via Vagrant Records. The bulk of the album was produced at Austin's Church House Studios by Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse), while John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Okkervil River) handled production on the album tracks "Skulldiggin", "Dar Es Salaam", and "My Blood Ain't Runnin' Right". In a statement, Joe Lewis himself described the album's theme as a reaction to our shared obsession with modern technology. " Electric Slave is what people [...]
Nate Miller in a L.A.-based, Washington, D.C. ex-pat whose late 2012 release "Fall Is Meant for Falling to the Ground" is an amiable mix of up-tempo folk-rock and lovelorn Americana adorned with piano, organ, horns, pedal steel and strings. It was produced by Nate Vaughan, who plays on the album along with more than 15 other contributors, including cellist Anna Su, who provides background vocals on "The Darkest Spaces." Speaking of strings, the video for that track takes the idea of I-feel-so-lost-it's-like-I'm-f loating to a Valencia pool. We don't know what's sadder, the song, or the fact that, [...]

Yesterday, Danny Brown dropped by Tim Westwood's BBC radio show to try his hand at a "Crib Sessions" freestyle . Brown went in over Pusha T and Kanye West' s "Numbers on the Board" , spitting more trademark bizarro rhymes ("So many hoes on my dick/I look like Roy Orbison") and generally infusing the oscillating banger with a healthy dose of peculiarity. (Maybe that pre-performance "smoke break" aided him in some way?) Later in the evening, Brown performed a show in London and brought out Action Bronson to perform "Strictly 4 My Jeeps".

New Zealand's French For Rabbits follow up their 2012 Claimed By The Sea EP with a mesmerizing new folk number called "Goat". The duo describe it as a "lament on stubbornness and being sorry," yet somehow it feels like much more than a mere apology. The way the song literally unfolds — to bare its honesty, its regret, and everything in between — comes off as rawness in its most intimate, reflective form. Brooke Singer's voice, a smoky, cooling whisper, channels the kind of vulnerability most of us keep hidden deep down [...]

Although Bada$$'s mixtape was pushed back to July 1st (FML), we can enjoy the second drop off his upcoming "Summer Knights" mixtape. 95 till Infiniti , produced by Lee Bannon, shows us a new, harder flowing, Pro Era front man. Now although I definitely don't prefer his new flow to his classic one, it is absolutely crazy to see how diverse this young man is.... peep back for more info soon.

MMG's Rockie Fresh calls on the Taylor Gang's frontman's flow for his brand new single. Kush Do is a melodic balad where both lyricists showcase their respected styles and add to one hell of beat. Check out the new single below and stay tuned for more from MMG's youngest members.

Last month, we sampled a piece of The Love Language' s forthcoming third album, Ruby Red , with the driving, anthemic "Calm Down" . Now, we're treated to its closing track, "Pilot Light". Robust orchestration back Stuart McLamb's brawny, but high-soaring vocals, for a rousing four-minute number whose romantic, heart-on-the-sleeve sentiments are only further amplified by the song's big, swelling sounds. Even when McLamb pauses during the bridge to give a lone, quiet confession, "I think I'm finally seeing the light", he's able to regather momentum and finish strong as ever. [...]

Wise Blood' s latest track, "Alarm", is a dizzying and complex affair, winding and unwinding like a lullaby gone wrong, gone rogue. This should come as no surprise, however, given the past material conjured up by the unsettling mind of the man behind the moniker, Christopher Laufman. Even so, this slow-bounced jam still has the ability to snap up listeners' psyches when they least expect it, pulling them into a bizarre, house-of-mirrors-type universe of madness. "Alarm" is off Wise Blood's forthcoming debut album, [...]

Looks like summer's gonna have to wait a little longer: fast-rising Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ has pushed back his Summer Knights mixtape to July 1st. But as a musical mea culpa, Mr. Bada$$ has unveiled the second single in "'95 Til Infinity". Similar to "Word Is Bond" , the Lee Bannon-produced track harkens back to the rap's heyday of the early '90s, with the harmonious vocal samples and slow-moving drums tailor-made for some sweaty block party circa '92. Meanwhile, Bada$$ continues to prove himself as an increasingly-lethal lyrical dynamo, forcefully spitting lines [...]

It's kinda unclear what "C'mon Stimmung" actually means (you tell me), but who cares? It's brand new No Age , dammit. The messy, profusely chaotic and disorienting track is the first from the band's upcoming new LP An Object , which will be released August 20 on Sub Pop . Listen to it below.

Before Ann Arbor producer Shigeto releases his brand new No Better Time Than Now LP, Ghostly is offering a preview of the album's first official single "Detroit Part 1." Obvious jazz influences reign through on the track with peeling key progressions railing behind brisk snare drops and pulsed synths, which can be streamed below. The label, also based in Ann Arbor, will be releasing "Detroit Part 1" as a 12" June 17, roughly two months before the scheduled August 20 release date of No Better Time Than Now .

Chicago's Smith Westerns have already plucked two spirited offerings from the upcoming Soft Will LP, but seemed to have topped both "Varsity" and 3 AM Spiritual" with "Idol." All three tracks - which might be a good indicator of Soft Will as a whole - are far more harmonious than most of the material the group brought out with its self-titled debut and 2011's excellent Dye It Blonde . Expect the rest of the record to hold the same regard, although it may fall by the wayside compared to the year's bigger releases. [...]
