For the past two weekends the Crescent City has played host to the annual New Orlean's Jazz & Heritage Festival . During their first-weekend set, Calexico paid tribute to one of New Orleans' native sons - the severely under-appreciated Bobby Charles. The late singer-songwriter, who likely best known to HT readers for his appearance on The Last Waltz soundtrack, began writing and recording songs at the age of 17. While he never quite achieved success as a solo artist, Charles' songs have been recorded by an impressive list of musicians including Ray Charles, [...]

The Internet's constant rush of new music is great. But time and time again, audiences come back to the old stuff. As of last year, catalog sales outpace new music sales . People who lived in the era of whatever that "old stuff" is seek it out for nostalgia and young people who never lived in that music's era long for a time in music history they never lived in. But how does the constant rush of quality new music get winnowed down and become “old stuff” or canon? Converting the varied ages at New Orleans Jazz & [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , Around the World Amy Touchette It was one of those only-at-Jazz-Fest phenomena. The annual New Orleans extravaganza was having arguably the biggest concentration of star power in its history, with nearly all of its 10 stages featuring headlining stars in one or the other genres spotlighted in the wide-ranging "heritage" berth of its title. John Mellencamp was at the big stage [...]
Arcade Fire had a busy weekend in New Orleans. Along with an onstage collaboration with Cyndi Lauper , the band's appearance at this year's New Orleans Jazz Festival also saw Win and Régine join Haitian band RAM for a rendition of - you guessed it - "Haiti". Check out the clip above (via @arcadefiretube ). The two bands have collaborated quite a bit over the last year. Last summer, Arcade Fire and RAM teamed up for a performance of "Haiti" during the Quebec City Summer Fest - unfortunately, as far as I can [...]
"D'ya ever suck the head o' a crawdad?" Not something you're likely to overhear whilst standing in 30 degree heat at an Irish summer music festival. State has ended up at a huge racecourse in Louisiana and crawfish, or crawdaddy shells litter the ground around one of the numerous amazing food stalls that are scattered over the fairgrounds at this 7 day festival with 15 different stages. Whilst being billed as a 'Jazz and Heritage Festival' it's a musical event that has been taking place for over 40 years and has a range of acts from Haiti traditional drummers, Native [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Getty Images His days as a Byronic love god may be long past him, but Robert Plant proudly wore his Led Zeppelin past on his T-shirt sleeve during a stirring 90-minute set to close the first day of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Friday (April 29). Dressed in a blue T-shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots, with a chartreuse feather hanging from his [...]
Last night, Robert Plant & The Band Of Joy lengthy world tour brought them to the historic Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. The 18-song show leaned mostly on Zeppelin classics, mixed with material from his last two Americana-tinged albums. During their three-song encore Plant & Co. nodded to two of the Bay Area's iconic psychedelic rock acts by debuting covers of Jefferson Airplane's She Has Funny Cars and a Grateful Dead-inspired take on the traditional tune And We Bid You Goodnight that was sandwiched in between a take on Gallows Pole... The generations-ago influx of Afro-Caribbean traditions via the slave trade and, [...]
April 29 – May 8, 2011 New Orleans, LA It may be the only Fair Grounds on earth where you can wander between 12 outdoor stages with a cocktail larger than a toddler, eat alligator on a stick, and take in sets from wildly divergent world-class acts, all the while embracing the swampy goodness that is New Orleans in springtime. It can only mean one thing: Jazz Fest is back. Held ten days over the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May, the 2011 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival [...]
Were any of us foolish enough to believe this week would be all quiet on the Festivals news front? In the wake of Coachella's 2011 lineup announcement countless other premium festivals, both domestic and abroad, proved that they were not ready to go gentle into that good night. The New Orleans Jazz Fest dropped a formidable, genre-spanning bill, while Spain's Bilbao BBK Live proved that Amy Winehouse is not only alive, but still capable of being booked. We'd also be remiss not to note last night's surprising, yet totally kick ass bombshell. Reclusive Neutral Milk Hotel [...]

Looks like when one festival reveals their line up , the rest start coming out the woodwork. Thanks to Consequence of Sound , we now know the line up for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The two weekend fest - April 29-May 1 & May 5-May 8 - will be headlined by the likes of bands including Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Robert Plant & The Band of Joy and even [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Gus Stewart, Redferns Not one to be outdone by Coachella, another American festival stalwart -- the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival -- announced its lineup on Thursday, just one day after Coachella's official announcement. And this year's Jazz Fest , which traditionally takes over the city of New Orleans for two weeks every spring, seems to be giving that other festival in the desert a run for [...]
