The Eastern Sea is sure to have a great year, if you're going off this new single from their upcoming album, Plague . You can get your hand on this record on June 26th via the WhiteLabBlackLab Label . Our first listen to the record is pretty splendid; it opens with a trickling bit of guitar work. It's so gentle in its approach that you might skip the quieted lyrics that enter around the 1 minute mark, but once they grab hold of you, you'll pray that they stick around. The [...]
Seems like it's been ages since we posted about Aussie bros Wizard Oz though they've continued to put out quality releases in my ear's absence. Next up is their Flashing Lights tape and they've sent over the first song and it's video. I'm now sure how blatantly wanton the title is supposed to be but "Pull Out Slow" is an easy-going, wispy track with light vocals and rounded guitar riffs. Though the video is angular 902s montage static, it lends itself nicely to the song's personality. Wizard Oz - Pull Out Slow
Honeydrum created a video for the b-side on their upcoming Stranger Calls 73. This band is known for constantly putting out tapes and songs but I'm always befuddled at how they are never unsteady in the quality of work they release. Impose has quite a few choice words to say about the New Jersey band here . Amdiscs will be releasing this in April. previously: Honeydrum - Saturday Morning
Drowsy new offerings from Oakland purveyors of layered psychedelia, Clipd Beaks . Proving to be a nice accompaniment to this gloomy LA afternoon. Evil jazz tangents and erratic drum machine paint a beautiful landscape in "All The Way Evil," download the track below and check out the album Wake . Clipd Beaks - All The Way Evil
I met a few of these guys at SXSW, had heard of them but never listened to them though I planned on it once returning home, but forgot of course. Thankfully today IGIF made a post about their song "Fireworks of the Sea." White Arrows come from LA and play tuneful, upbeat pop songs but maintain a completely unique output.
Before Justin Vernon took Bon Iver into the next stratosphere, he was in a North Carolina by way of Wisconsin band called DeYarmond Edison. After putting out two full lengths and an EP, DeYarmond Edison split with Vernon forming Bon Iver, and three of the other members forming the "freak folk" band Megafaun. Now, a third faction from DeYarmond Edison has formed, with former member Chris Porterfield forming the new outfit Field Report. While Megafaun seems to have very little in common with Bon Iver save for the aforementioned affiliation - Field Report seems to fit right in [...]
Our friends over at NPR seem to always have the heads up on new albums and this week is no different. M. Ward's highly anticipated A Wasteland Companion is due out April 10th, but you can give the whole thing a spin right here . After just one listen it's clear that this is the Ward we have come to know and love - melodic, grim at times, and always smooth, I'll be giving this one another spin for sure. As if that wasn't enough NPR is also streaming Of Monsters and Men's debut [...]
Black Keys' Dan Auerbach is a busy man as of late, which seems to be a good thing. Auerbach co-wrote and produced several songs off Grace Potter and the Nocturnals upcoming album The Lion the Beast the Beat , which will be out this June. Our first taste of his influence comes with "Never Go Back," a song that Auerbach co-wrote with Potter in just one short hour (not sure if I'm impressed or disappointed). Check out Rolling Stones' exclusive premiere here .
After taking an 8 year hiatus Guided by Voices released Let's Go Eat the Factory earlier this year and is soon to release yet another album, Class Clown Spots a UFO . (Brownie points for one of the more original album titles I've heard lately). The new song falls right in line with the band's previous work, of which there is plenty to draw from, utilizing pop and sonic rock to create a likable and promising first single. Give it listen below.
M. Ward's new album A Wasteland Companion is out April 10th but we already have two new tunes to get excited about. No awkward adjustments here as "The First Time I Ran Away" and "Primitive Girl" both sound like classic M. Ward. Ward's trademark smooth-as-silk vocals and plucky guitar along with some well placed oohs and ahhhs make for two very enjoyable tunes. Check both out below.
Lee Fields has been in the business for 43 years and although he has been in and out of the spotlight it seems he's ready for yet another comeback. Fields' new record Faithful Man comes out March 13th and from the sounds of it he hasn't missed a beat over the years. By now it's no secret that I am a sucker for that old R&B/Motown sound and after hearing "You're the Kind of Girl" for the first time I got giddy like a little school girl. Let's face it there aren't many chances to [...]
Yesterday the homie Beachtapes tweeted a link to a band called The Breezes . I was immediately like, "Okay, this will either be very enjoyable or this will be some more crap I just got duped into listening to because their name reminds me of the waterfront." Luckily for us all, "Promethean Eyes" is very enjoyable. It's so spring and so smooth, with a totally non-offensive, light seventies vibe to it. Here's a cool idea, on the house: put this song on an ethereally themed Picnic Mix and go get someone pregnant with a [...]
A little behind on this one, but Art Fag just released Heavy Hawaii 's Super Bowl XXIX 73-the band picks up where they left off with their tasty shoe-wop melodies. The song stands-out with its pulsing organ and patently soft harmonies, tailor-made for a sugary-sweet Pacific breeze. Check out a silly little video for the song below, and go to Art Fag to purchase the 7-inch.
North of the border our Canadian brothers are kicking ass-often times I feel like people only talk about the Montreal music scene, but lately all I've been hearing is Toronto. It is in this city that Telephone Explosion records resides and it is in this city they released the new Teenanger album entitled Frights . The record is an instant aural orgy in your headcase, clanging, pranging and spouting snotty adages into your ears-specks of spit hitting your cheek. The band has created two intense videos outlining these qualities, check them out below. [...]
