It has been said that all art is a product of its context. That is certainly true of the self-titled third album by New Zealand songwriter Annabel Alpers who records solo albums and performs live as Bachelorette . Bachelorette was recorded while Alpers was living a somewhat transient lifestyle with parts of the album recorded in Libya, Virginia, New Zeland, NYC and the UK. Each of these settings left a mark on the album. For example, the album's final track "Not Entertainment" features a sampled Muslim call to prayer that would ring out in her neighborhood while [...]
Howard Shore wrote one of thee film scores of recent times with his music for Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings trilogy. It now seems that a heroic nerd, with classically trained musical talent, has taken a firm hold of the Shire with her boundy movements. Virtuoso violinist Lindsey Stirling, of ' Legends of Zelda' fame, has just slammed out another devoted fan video, this time taking on a different cult franchise: The Lord of The Rings. Immediately it's clear everything is in keeping with Peter Jackson's vision, physically popping over [...]

He champions the newest style of electro, 'complextro,' characterized by complex bass and melody lines made up of multiple synths. With a few solid beatport releases, and an official remix of Martin Solveig's 'Hello' (as well as a banging bootleg of Nicky Romero's 'Toulouse'), Ryan Enzed appears ready to show the EDM world what he can do in 2012. We got the band to explain what they're about and why they have an obsession with naming songs after themselves. (EMJ) When did you start Autumn Splendour and has it always been the same line-up? Yep, that would be a Minutemen reference you see there, however that's pretty much where that homage stops. God Bows to Math are an Auckland, New Zealand based group that I first noticed with their EP from earlier last year and enjoyed enough to throw on a podcast. Didn't realize an album was already in the plans, but as it turns out they've been trying to get this thing together for awhile now with a number of hangups along the way and finally getting it released towards the end of [...]

This sure as hell doesn't need those funny as rhymers who go by the Flight of the Conchords, but it sure makes for good comic relief. Spoonhead's glitched-out remix of "Hiphoppotamus vs. Rhymenocerous" is one heeavvvvvvy lazer-crunk beat with supporting vocals from Jermaine & Bret. "They call me the Hiphopopotamus, my lyrics are bottomless...." Flight of the Conchords - GlitchHopapotomus (Spoonhead Remix) Spoonhead Styles: Progressive, Psybreaks, Glitch-Hop, Bass [...]

Warped All Day Take a ride on Cartoon's magic carpet through an interstellar world of warped synths, squeals and relentless barrelling drums. Listening to the album 69er On A Magic Carpet is like being stuck in a remixed computer game, upside down. Dizzying sounds whir past at breakneck speed in an ever-upbeat utopia. In the spirit of Dan Deacon, Ryan Bennett's energy levels remain high in a constant state of psychotic bliss. With chewy synths splitting the crisp cuts of seamless melodies it [...]

New Zealand indie quintet The Naked And Famous' debut album "Passive Me, Aggressive You" gets more love in the U.S.

It's been a great year for the Oceanic music to break big all over the world, from Twerps to Geoffrey O' Connor and now to Opposite Sex . Their self-titled album is something that should definitely make it into your weekly playlist, otherwise you're going to be missing some special goodness. In my mind, the first run through, I thought of a cleaner, more playful version of Love Is All , which is one of my favorite acts. It's got a little bit of an off-kilter [...]
This is not the first time Kiwi electropop sensation Zowie is mentioned on this blog. You might remember the explosive video for her single "Bite Back", or maybe the irresistible beat of her most recent hit "Smash It" , released last October. You thought you'd seen it all, well think again! Let's just go back in time a little and rediscover "Broken Machine", the song that made everyone fall in love with Zowie in the first place. The video for this sugar-coated pop anthem was directed by NZ combo [...]
The New Zealand fuzz-poppers kicked off 2011 with the release of their debut full-length album, Kudos , on Fire Records, and a brief American tour with psych-rock label mates Bardo Pond. And now, to round out the year, they've dropped a video to accompany the single, "Crazy Rulers of the World." The video debuted on Pitchfork a few weeks back and we've got the video for you here in case you missed it. We created this official video from footage shot during their D.C. show, so you've got a little bit of AON [...]
