One of the best qualities of Bob Pollard's prolific career is his innate ability to swing together loose and sludgy pop gems at a rapid pace. He's like the MacGyver of garage rock punk. Give him a guitar, a tape recorder, and a microphone, and he'll inevitably whip up something spectacular. Perhaps the most important quality of any good DIY pop album is its sincerity, and to what extent the music avoids a forced, contrite kind of sound. The DIY ethos is all the rage, but few do it with the sincerity of those old Guided [...]

'Not Me ' By Milk Maid. We have often banged the drum with regard to the fact that you don't neccesarily need a huge budget and fancy production techniques to produce great music. Milk Maid's debut album ' Yucca' once again adds weight to our argument. Recorded in songwriter Martin Cohen's flat during the indefinite hiatus of Nine Black Alps , [bands never simply split-up these days] it reveals Cohen's keen ear for a pop hook, juxtaposed with dark lyrics and visceral guitars. It's an album that conjures up the ghosts [...]

Milk Maid From: Manchester, United Kingdom Milk Maid is ex Nine Black Alps bass player Martin Cohen's new project. With melodies that make you giddy and a guitar so laid back it's practically horizontal it's about as far as you can get from his former band. New single Not Me is a blast of fuzzy pop sounds like the Beach Boys played through gauze by the Jesus and Mary Chain. The other [...]

No Imagination by Sam Forrest ALBUM REVIEW: Please meet Sam Forrest's 3rd solo effort No Imagination which finds him moving away from the straight up acoustic/folksy guy in the back shed to the do-it all himself rockband (including drums). This North Yorkshire creator/guitarist has added some noise on rediscovery of the sonic youth adding some nice layers of feedback to the palette of man vs songs and is at the top of his craft. No Imagination will give purveyors of sounds a couple subtle winterly chills that [...]
![[music video] Sam Forrest – Echo Godless](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3072938_lg.jpg)
Sam Forrest is the lead singer/guitarist of Nine Black Alps . I absolutely loved their debut album, Everything Is back in high school. So you can imagine that it was a really pleasant surprise to get an e-mail from Sam about his solo music, as I was previously unaware that he released solo material. He just released a new music video for his song "Echo Godless". It's a really pretty track that actually reminds me a lot of Elliot Smith. It sounds like it's a song built on longing and regret, or at least [...]
![[Listen] – #MusicMonday – 20 Songs Of The Week – Feb 22nd](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2369840_lg.jpg)

Using the hashtag (#) followed by "MusicMonday" you can easily find new music posted by the thousands of people making recommendations each week. Every #MusicMonday I'll upload a playlist of 20 songs that I've been listening to (new and old) over the [...]

First of all, Merry Christmas! Hope you had a good one. So here it is: Part I of 2STEPS' official albums of the year list. We love lists here, even if there has been a slight overload this year what with the decade ending and all (more on that in the coming weeks) But this is always the most important. Come the end of every year I look back and bask in all the great music we've been graced with over the last 12 months. It's inspiring when you look at it - innovative and great music is still being [...]

... And so it commences. The beginning of the end of the first decade of the 21st century. I was way ahead of the times naming my albums of the decade way back in June (Coldplay's 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' won if it's an inconvenience to click). 2009 itself has been a seemly year for records, perhaps not as inventive as 08's NY ascendancy or 01's, erm, NY ascendancy, but a decorous annum still and all. So, without extra ado, here are my albums of the last twelve months in order (sprinkled over the next [...]

As we progress down our path of the loveliest music of the decade, we'll give you a bit more detail on the records we've chosen. While we were infatuated with numbers 31-40 (which you can read here), we're ready to go to battle over every selection from 1 to 30. Not a bad song on any of these albums, if you ask us. You can listen to the entire album of each of these by registering with Lala.com.... but you knew that, right? While we don't claim this to be a defining document of merit, we [...]

One of the joys of running this site is the daily discovery of new bands. As we've said before, this has been one of the most vibrant and exciting years for music in decades. But this week we had the incredible pleasure to re-discover a band we've loved for years. Nine Black Alps are a Manchester quartet that formed in late 2003 and were quickly snapped up by Island Records. They spent a year touring and recording with acclaimed producer Rob Schnapf who had worked with Beck and Elliot Smith. Their first album, 'Everything Is' was a sonic [...]

Not him ... But them... Kong Genre: Punk From: Manchester, United Kingdom Kong (not to be confused with Holland's Kong ) are from Manchester of that there is no doubt whatever about that. Their myspace site confirms that Manchester is their home but you wouldn't know it if you listened to them. [...]

It has become somewhat of a tradition for me to make an annual summer mix, and this year is no exception. So here comes the third. I've spent quite a lot of effort on this, as I want it to be capable of capturing my mood, the music I frequently listen to in the summer of '08, like a time capsule, so that one day I can look back and reminisce (and weep and moan about the good ol' days). I'm really satisfied with the results, I think I'm getting better at this, and I hope you will enjoy it, [...]
The second single from the second Nine Black Alps album is Bitter End and it's a good one. But their best and poppiest track to date is the third single, Future Wife. It reminds me of when I was first listening to Radio 1 and Mark Goodier was presenting the Evening Session. Which specific band I'm not sure - maybe The Candyskins. Future Wife - Nine Black Alps (album is released on October 22 so not on iTunes yet) There are excerpts from five new Alps album tracks here [...]
