Owl Mag writer and Bay Area native, Jeff Bracco, cut classes and bought bootleg CDs to get his musical fix in high school.

Last spring Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros embarked on the Railroad Revival Tour , which saw the three bands traverse the country together via vintage train cars. The throwback tour, which got its inspiration from the famed 1970 Festival Express tour that transported the likes of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Band across Canada, began in Oakland and ended in New Orleans, stopped in six cities along the cross-country route where the bands performed at unique outdoor venues. The entire [...]

Tweet "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes", David Bowie once sang. A rather apt song to be thinking of at the moment of my return back to the hallowed halls of LBYB after some time away. I'd like to tell you it was to do something grand like climbing Everest but sadly it was changes to personal stuff. All the while I was gone however, I kept an eye on the site and watched it go through some changes of its own, and what great changes they were. [...]

We'll get through this together. I promise. Alright? Are you sitting down? Okay. Good. Here we go. Courtney Love has not been [...]

Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]

You have no idea how many times I've read about people referencing Captain Beefheart when describing the music I love, but for some inexplicable reason I have never really explored his music. The other day someone shared the video above on their Facebook timeline thingy and for the first time I actually listened to some Beefheart. And you know what, pretty fucking good don't you think. After that I happened across this phenomenal video for The Blues Are Still Blue by Belle & Sebastian. I am not convinced they gave permission for this directly, [...]

Some new Deadmau5, a little Notorious B.I.G. courtesy of Viceroy, and some throwback Nirvana that's given a modern-day makeover. Deadmau5 comes out hot with "Cthulhu23, a jam that is retro in style but still bangs hard, and a clip from "Shits Fashionable I Guess" , The Mau52s own version of the dubstep variety. Viceroy gets his Jet Life on with a funky and tropical remix of "Going Back to Cali", which features some steel drum samples that give it a truly beachy feel. Sound [...]
