I'm ecstatic to have discovered a new band through Twitter! Holland are an ambient-indie group who originate from Brisbane, Australia. They describe their influences as a "constant revolving door". Some of them stem from The Beatles to Radiohead to Manchester Orchestra, and these influences can be heard in various tracks of theirs. The band have released their debut EP No Control which features two, new live tracks which will be on their forthcoming debut album. After listening to their tunes, the one which appeals to me the most would [...]

HOLLAND are one of those bands that leave your ears yearning for another one of their magical, melodious explosions long after the lights go out. So just a warning for anyone following their tour dates, these four Brisbane boys can holistically sedate you with ambience as soon as their set begins. When Sony Music's executives heard their stuff they signed the band to a recording contract and later, a management arrangement fell into place with Billy Blue Music and things began to snowball. Previously known as Fatis Valour , Holland is [...]

I bought this, way back in 1989, because Kreator's Mille Petroza wore their shirt, which was simply a cross struck-through with a "no" symbol. Didn't know a thing about them, otherwise-- and it took many listens for this thrash-metal zealot to truly get No Control. But get it I did. Every song, every lyric-- which to this day I know backwards. As I like to say, it gets in, it gets out, and rocks out in the interim. It's 15 tracks of punk rock --average length of about a minute and a half-- [...]

Earlier this Year, I was contacted by Matthew Pollesel, the man behind long-running Canadian music blog i(heart)music . Matt had decided to give blogging a rest, and in doing so was looking for someone to take over the Canadian leg of the Music Alliance Pact (MAP), a monthly jaunt around the musical globe featuring contributions from bloggers all over the world, who put together a collective post featuring their favourite new music from home. I was honoured to be asked, and proud to join the MAP ranks. Today's marks my initial contribution, and MAP's debut outing on Quick Before [...]

SINGAPORE : I'm Waking Up To... Shelves - Star Alright The much-anticipated debut album by Shelves was released this month on both vinyl and digital , resurrecting not just the choicest cuts of Britpop and college rock, but the very essence of the 90s Singapore scene. Yet the record sounds anything but dated, with its clever balance of crisp melodies and generous distortion pointing the way forward for indie rock today. That vision [...]

Time once again, oh fearless waverider, for another installment of one of our favorite column, The D.I.Y. Ethic, our ode to all the multipulously talented folk out there that divide their time between the day job and the basement studio. (and in case you're wondering, yes, I did just make up that word, but it certainly seems to fit). And have we got an assortment for you today. That's one of the things that thrills us the most about the D.I.Y. musician-- there is no end to the limits of their muse. It seems that [...]
