Hippy 's two EPs , constant gigs around New York, and a trip to SXSW have established the band on everyone's list of who's taking off in the Brooklyn music scene, and the timing is just right for the release of their upcoming LP Almost Live . The 12 tracks promise to be more of the lo-fi garage pop, always with a twist, for which Hippy is known. Enjoy an early listen of "Magic Wand" off of the new album below, available today for digital download .
Misteria might be Chicago producer Dolor's proper debut EP, but the young chap already made quite some fuss a year ago, first with his acclaimed and approved reinterpretations of The Weeknd's extensively reworked tracks , then with the excellent Drugs mixtape , produced together with Ninja Tune heavyweight Lorn . As expected, the upcoming five-track EP taps into similar terrain, murky beats and obscure textures creating haunting soundscapes that take inspiration from left-field R&B and hip hop just as much as they exploit tropes of contemporary UK bass. The [...]
Members of the experimental prog outfit Ga'an have been making a comeback recently: first, vocalist Lindsey Powell released a lovely track as Fielded , and now member Tyson Tortensen has dropped a track from his new project, Night Terror . But while Powell exchanged Ga'an's darkly ritualistic feel for virtuoso pop, Tortensen picks up right where Ga'an left of. On Night Terror's latest track, "They Die", taken from his forthcoming cassette Night Terrors , prog-textures and 80s horror soundtracks are melded and warped together into a haunting jam. Indeed, the song [...]
As an individual track, "Dracula's Castle" plays as a silver-tongued late night mover with an infectious funky synth baseline. As the track unfolds, layers of textural synth samples are added, creating an archetypical progressive Detroit techno-inspired record. But for the track to be fully appreciated, it has to be played within the context of the whole album. Ø has an evocative quality, as it plays as a medley of sounds from the past. Each track has its own distinctive reminiscent feature created through its own blend of samples and live performances. Whether it's the psychedelic "Morning One" that [...]

Cry Guy is a new duo consisting of Little Spoon's Cameron Potter and his friend Virginia, and their track Gumdrop Wishes is simply breathtaking. Falling in love with new music is one life's simple pleasures and 2012 was a fantastic year of discovery for me. I've already featured a few of my new favorites this year, including Bright Moments, HAERTS, Porcelain Raft, and Vacationer (just to name a few), and today i'd like to highlight a few more. But first I need to give credit where credit is due. If it weren't for the following music outlets, my music repertoire would be far less exciting. Big thanks to All Songs Considered , Big Hassle , EARMILK , Girlie Action , Head [...]

All too often music bloggers are accused of being music snobs. And to a large extent that accusation is perfectly reasonable. There's something somewhat audacious about endlessly recommending music, as if we are the ones in the know and it's equally as audacious to presume that anyone wants to listen to our never-ending suggestions. How dare we assume that you actually care about our opinions. This snobbishness can cause a music blog to lean ever-further to the left, hunting out music that wears it's 'Alternative' labels with pride. As we lurk in the deep dark underground our recommendations avoid the [...]

Our friendly peers over at the excellent blog No Fear Of Pop are starting a label called Stratosfear Recordings and the first release is a single by Solar Year , a spacey duo from Montreal. Yes, another cool new band from Montreal - the city appears to be experiencing a bit of a musical renaissance after cooling down for a couple years.
Evian Christ for Fortyounce London: No Experiences From his eerily fantastic edits to his mesmerizing and exploratory live set, Evian Christ has clearly become the next H20 to quench your erratic, electronic soul’s thirst. His edit of another favorite newcomer this year, Arclight is hauntingly brilliant. Tracklisting: arclight - holographic (evian christ version) wanda group - a warm perspective on a liner vessel - lache steve peters + steve roden - fade away within 1991 - domination translates directly into efficiency weit draussen - durch! julianna barwick - bode [...]

Beyond proud of my fellow bloggers & friends of No Fear Of Pop . Not only have they relaunched their long-time blog with a stunning new design last week, this week marks the start of another exciting journey as they will be running a little label called Stratosfear themselves as well. Operating from Berlin and thus a fellow European (non-UK) blog, we just had to sit down with No Fear Of Pop's Henning and Tonje to ask them some questions about Stratosfear. Stratosfear. Could you describe it to us in your own words? [...]

This was premiered on No Fear of Pop the other day and my oh my what a great pairing it is. Teen Daze has remixed a favourite of mine, Zambri's Hundred Hearts . And in true Teen Daze style all signs of darkness have been shed, instead being transformed into this joyfully uplifting piece of goodness (forgive me for that sentence), so enjoy:
Copenhagen-based psych-pop band Halasan Bazar is...pretty deece. Look for a full-length in August, apparently. (via No Fear Of Pop )

Ahhh, femme fatalistic shoegaze tunes from San Fran's Vestals . Very nice. Suuuure would like to hear the EP this is from...perhaps someone should send it to me... (via No Fear Of Pop )

Apparently one of the No Fear Of Pop writers found this dude Helmut playing dark, melancholic tunes on the streets of Berlin the other day and was digging it. Well, thanks to the wonders of the internet, I am now digging it too (via No Fear Of Pop ) sepi by HELMUT the tribe by HELMUT
People love lists, and people love music, and some people love music blogs, and then there are others who enjoy Twitter, and then we have a few people who enjoy them altogether. With this list though, it's not just about who's the biggest music blog or who posts the most, it's a mix between blogs who post regularly fantastic content and others who post less content to their own blog but who's Twitter game is on fire. We follow and interact with these blogs on a daily basis, and you should too. Here they are in alphabetical order. [...]
"Youths" by Slow Magic , found at No Fear Of Pop . The video comes from Feel Good Lost , directed by Brendan Canty and Conal Thomson. The track is from the bands' 8-track album “▲”, out on April 30th via LebensStrasse Records.
NFOP SESSIONS #8: Mutual Benefit - Auburn Epitaphs from Tonje Thilesen on Vimeo . Check out this rad video of my friend Jordan/ Mutual Benefit performing for a No Fear of Pop session playing Auburn Epitaphs in Brooklyn. He's so magical.

The preparation began early in the evening. PA - check; musically inclined friends - check; alcohol - check; smores stuff - check; firewood - sort of check (12 $2 duraflame logs will do). By about 9:00pm, our little SXSW blogger hostel backyard garden was ready for a night of friends and soft sounds. The music that filled the air came from the far reaching honesty of Matthew Sage , the captivating future gospel of Eola , the sweet whispers of my sister Steffaloo , the kitchenware experimentation [...]
