Nootropics is an album I regret not reviewing when it first hit the shelves. It's heavy and personal. It lingers and haunts you like a bad decision, bad behavior in general. It's up for debate as to whether it's a positive or negative aspect to the current state of music but to find a band with a truly diverse sound is a rare find. Sure it's great to put on an album such as Nootropic from Lower Dens and immerse yourself in it's hip-chillness which vaguely transforms itself from track to track, the downside to albums like that is it makes most bands feel one-sided and leaves those experiencing it with very low expectations for the future of such bands and [...]

One of the great aspects of Lower Dens is how careful and studied their brand of experimental pop music comes across, yet if you follow the band on Twitter, or watch videos such as “Candy”, you’ll immediately get the sense that they are total smart-assess who love to display humor — and humanity — in every situation. The more I think about the band as these witty human beings the more I want to go back and listen to Nootropics from a completely different perspective.

This is, by far, the weirdest and most-freaky team-building field trip I've ever seen, and I've seen a few! The dude/chick with the nose is especially frightening, and that creepy face-tracking business is creepy, much like captain obvious is less than subtle.  "Candy" is the latest video to be taken from Lower Dens 's breathtaking new album Nootropics , out now, and very much worth your time. Somewhere across town, a throng of exceptionally well-put-together hipsters and "youth" were throwing their flannel selves around to local media darlings Japandroids. Meanwhile, at the Media Club, an entirely different group of hipsters, respectably bespectacled art types, gathered for Baltimore's Lower Dens . A show that I billed as a must see this past Tuesday definitely lived up to its expectations.  I met up with our photographer Brian Gray, and we jammed it out.
