FREENESS: L'Orange – Still Spinning

FREENESS: L'Orange – Still Spinning No one has shaped my view of music more than James Yancey. He challenged our idea of music and pushed us towards a more progressive and creative appreciation of hip hop. He died six years ago, but the music lives on in his wake. This project is dedicated to the life and memory of the one and only J Dilla. -L'Orange DOWNLOAD "Still Spinning" ON BANDCAMP CLICK HERE L'Orange: Twitter • Facebook • Bandcamp [...]

North Carolina [Sports] I don't know if you caught today's killer college game of Duke vs. North Carolina, but here's what rookie Austin Rivers, yes, Doc Rivers, Boston Celtics head coach, son did today. Duke Freshman Guard Austin Rivers makes a game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead Duke to the road upset of North Carolina. River scored a career-high 29 points, including six 3-pointers.

LISTEN: Hectorina - "Lost Weekend Waltz" // "Jonah, King of the Space Program

LISTEN: Hectorina - "Lost Weekend Waltz" // "Jonah, King of the Space Program Googling the name "Hectorina" won't really tell you much about the name or its significance. Instead, you'll probably learn a lot about baby names. What's a Hectorina? Who's Hectorina? Well, this particular Hectorina is a 3-piece math/psych/surf/indie rock outfit out of Charlotte, NC, fronted by Dylan Gilbert (someone I've failed to write about for roughly 3 or 4 years, forgive me) with ex-members of Dylan Gilbert & The Over Easy Breakfast Machine and Linus Van Pelt. The band's been working on a rock opera, which, based on these two songs, sounds like quite an exciting curveball -- at [...]

Red Tails Dubstep Trailer

Red Tails 30 Second Spot (Porter Robinson/Knife Party Version)
Click here to view the embedded video. When I first heard the new dubstep trailer for Red Tails it sure as hell got me going! I wasn't the biggest fan of Knife Party's remix of "Unison," but throw in some hair-raising fly footage and it makes for one hell of a match. Some of you don't like this new style of dubstep the kids are calling "brostep." And as much as I agree with you to a certain extent, there's no doubt that the dubstep (or brostep) makes this Red [...]

JAYBeatz · Dirty Diana (Mashup)

JAYBeatz · Dirty Diana (Mashup) Any Weeknd mixer/masher should be all over this. Combining an artist with potential that hasn't been seen since MJ, as well as the legend himself, makes for one dirty mashup. JAYBeatz is the first on deck with a "Dirty Diana" collision that carries the two well, but doesn't live up to what I'd think combining these two would bring. At times, I can barely tell MJ from The Weeknd, JAYBeatz plays off the two nicely, but also doesn't bring anything spine-tingling to the mix, like his Weeknd/Drake mash . Still like the direction [...]

Bite Sized Sets: The Rosebuds

Bite Sized Sets: The Rosebuds
This past summer saw the release of the Rosebuds fifth album, Loud Planes Fly Low. Representing both a musical and a personal evolution, the formerly married core band members Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp worked at redefining their relationship as friends and bandmates leading up to and through the writing and recording of the record-a process that yielded an intimate and honest result. As Kelly put it in an interview with MKOB , "The vibe of the record is the honest truth about what was happening between us every step of the way. [...]

Fine Tune Friday is just a window

Fine Tune Friday is just a window Megafaun, "You Are The Light" get it on Megafaun (2011) Things I'm a sucker for that are present in this song: Horn swells. In fact, if I was to start up a band, I'd probably call it Horn Swells. You can use it on your own band, but only if you're really awesome. A hymn feel. This is likely the name of the debut album by Horn Swells. [...]

[mp3] Simple – "Little Souvenir"

[mp3] Simple – "Little Souvenir" mp3: Simple - "Little Souvenir" Just busted open the new self-titled release from Chapel Hill's Simple. I've heard this band before, but now everything is tighter and GELLIN instead of some of the loose arrangements I've heard before. People that bleed for Titus Andronicus or Turbo Fruits will want to get infected with Simple. People that ingest Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., they'll want Simple to ooze all over them. All of this makes for a good record. I'll just hit you with a "Little Souvenir" (ha, double entendre or something) which is [...]

Lights Resolve Interview - LI, NY

Lights Resolve Interview - LI, NY I had the chance to catch Lights Resolve 's cryptic performance last week at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY in honor of the release of their debut album Feel You're Different . The band, dressed in all black, drew the crowd in from the very first haunting guitar ring guitarist Matt Reich let out. It's obvious these guys are digging deep. With slates of mirror behind the instruments that the entire crowd could see themselves in during their set, it seems like the band is asking their audiences to do the same. [...]

Loretta Lynn Hospitalized

Country music legend Loretta Lynn was forced to cancel a concert in Durham, North Carolina this past weekend as she battles pneumonia in the hospital. Doctors said that the 76-year old singer "will continue to need rest" according to a statement on her official website. The statement continued "Loretta is doing well and is disappointed but feels confident she will be ready for upcoming November dates." She has also already cancelled a performance scheduled for this coming Saturday night in Ashland, Kentucky. Tickets for the cancelled shows will be honored when the dates are rescheduled. Get well soon Loretta! Your [...]

Basic Physics & D.veloped · Turnin' Tricks For Treats

Basic Physics & D.veloped · Turnin' Tricks For Treats I've already had my fair share of Halloween remixes this year, but Basic Physics &&& D.veloped??? Talk about a perfect storm of mashers teaming up for one Halloween romp around! In their 2011 Halloween mix, "Turnin' Tricks for Treats," the two take on a shitload of samples to muster up one electric-horror show. Shit can get pretty dicey at times, but I consider that a good thing this time of the year. Samples used: 1. Slim Thug - Like A Boss [...]

I Was Totally Destroying It: The Key & The Rose

I Was Totally Destroying It: The Key & The Rose John Booker, of Chapel Hill's I Was Totally Destroying It, had about 35 songs and, much like any working musician, not much time to do anything with them. The story of Preludes begins here, before its time – six years before, to be precise. Originally planned to be material for a new I Was Totally Destroying It release, when the band decided to take a much more collaborative approach to their upcoming album (Vexations, due out sometime in 2012) Booker shelved most of the material, intending to save it for a future release or solo record, feeling it [...]

CMJ Spotlight: Delta Rae – The Interview

CMJ Spotlight: Delta Rae – The Interview I was first introduced to Delta Rae by our own Amita , which isn't anything out of the ordinary; introducing a fellow Ruckus kid to new music is something that happens a lot around here. A sucker for a good harmony, I was immediately hooked, and have greedily run off with every Delta Rae cover, video and track that has come our way since then. It's easy to understand why, once you've listened. Collectively, they have the most gorgeous vocals that I've heard from a new band in years. Their harmonies are absolute perfection, [...]
