Brooklyn's Northside Festival - not to be confused with Denmark's NorthSide Festival - is a multi-day music conference in the vein of SXSW, featuring hundreds of acts playing in various venues across the Williamsburg neighborhood. Many music fans today aren't familiar with the term "Dad Rock," but this new phenomenon, based on old ideals, is playing on the radio, at bars, in kitchens, and lurking around every corner. In my times seeing the band, I have watched them grow from at-times diffident live performers into a dialed-in act whose performances retain the ramshackle greatness of their earlier shows, but deliver a polish on their instruments and a solidity to their sound that was missing in some of those earlier shows. Contrary to the name, they are a summer band, inspired by frontman Andrew Marr's trip to a Florida beach. Chosen by the L Magazine as one of their " 8 Bands You Need to Hear ", this daytime showcase at Spike Hill during the Northside Festival showcased four of such acts, with Ski Lodge the final act on the bill. [Photos by acidjack] Not a ton is known about VÅR (formerly War) and their forthcoming record on Sacred Bones Records , but here goes: the band consists of the Danish artists Elias Bender Rønnenfelt of Iceage and  Sexdrome 's Loke Rahbek. They have a video for "In Your Arms (Final Fantasy)", which you can view here , and a 73  At War For Youth, that Sacred Bones released under their old band name. Their record will come out next year. This year’s Northside Festival was a year not to forget. Between it’s 20,000 square foot trade show, an eclectic mix of musicians, interesting panels, free booze (and a film festival to boot), it set the stage (literally) for summer festivals to come. At the Northside headquarters, there were spread young entrepreneurs promoting their companies. Hangover pills, tech startups, iPhone city apps and many more businesses repped their products through free goodies and detailed explanations. The warehouse was also the home to diverse music industry panels. The “Music Now” panels provided insight into the industry through music [...]

Check out this stunning live video by Neglakay Productions of Il Abanico performing " The Light " at FREECANDY in Brooklyn. From the  "Crossing Colors" EP  (which you can download for free on the band's Bandcamp ), this track is possibly the best example of what this band all about. The video does an incredible job capturing Il Abanico's energetic essence as performers that you hear in the song's buildup-not an easy feat. In the beginning, The L Magazine ’s Northside Festival was a small-scale celebration of Williamsburg and Greenpoint's indie music scene at a handful of venues in those neighborhoods, each night bringing a selection of the area's best local bands. By its fourth year, the event had grown into Brooklyn's own mini-South by Southwest; Northside's headquarters, once a bar's back room, stretched out to fill an airplane hangar-size warehouse, and its scope expanded to encompass film, art, and entrepreneurship.
