Many music fans today aren't familiar with the term "Dad Rock," but this new phenomenon, based on old ideals, is playing on the radio, at bars, in kitchens, and lurking around every corner. Simply put, it’s the kind of rock and roll that anybody born after 1950 can understand, drawing on sources as diverse as The British Invasion, the Mississippi Delta, New York in the late 1970s, and classic rock like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. Simply put, Dad Rock is all rock music that a 20-something’s dad would listen to. [...]

[Photos by acidjack] The Sacred Bones Records showcase was the last show I saw at the Northside Festival , and it was also one of the ones I anticipated the most. First, because I try to never miss a chance to see bands I like at Glasslands , and second, because it was a stellar lineup from beginning to end. Of the bands playing, Amen Dunes were one I had not seen before, but they won me over early with their hypnotic, dark sound that recalls Syd Barrett, the Velvet Underground, Suicide [...]

[photos by acidjack] As noted in our post back in May about the band, this site has followed Crystal Stilts from early on in their career. In my times seeing the band, I have watched them grow from at-times diffident live performers into a dialed-in act whose performances retain the ramshackle greatness of their earlier shows, but deliver a polish on their instruments and a solidity to their sound that was missing in some of those earlier shows. The band closed out the stellar Northside Festival showcase put on by Sacred Bones [...]

[Photos by acidjack] At this Northside Festival day show meant to showcase four of the " 8 Bands You Need to Hear " (as determined by the L Magazine ), Starlight Girls drew a crowd. As the first act on the bill, taking the stage during what most festivalgoers probably thought of as "recovery time" could have been a challenge. But by about the middle of "Try", the third song in their set, the Spike Hill show room was packed. The band serves up an addictive sound that references lounge music, [...]

[photos by acidjack] Fresh & Onlys guitarist Wymond Miles proved his chops as a frontman in his own right at this Glasslands show during the Northside Festival . With this particular show being showcase of some of the most promising acts from Sacred Bones Records , Miles easily put himself in that company with a performance that introduced (or re-introduced) the crowd to his solo material, including his most recent record (and second this year!), Under the Pale Moon . A downbeat record that tackles some recent tragedies [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Ski Lodge are the perfect band to write about on a day when temperatures in NYC are set to hit around 100 degrees. Contrary to the name, they are a summer band, inspired by frontman Andrew Marr's trip to a Florida beach. Chosen by the L Magazine as one of their " 8 Bands You Need to Hear ", this daytime showcase at Spike Hill during the Northside Festival showcased four of such acts, with Ski Lodge the final act on the bill. It wasn't hard to figure out [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Not a ton is known about VÅR (formerly War) and their forthcoming record on Sacred Bones Records , but here goes: the band consists of the Danish artists Elias Bender Rønnenfelt of Iceage and Sexdrome 's Loke Rahbek. They have a video for "In Your Arms (Final Fantasy)", which you can view here , and a 73 At War For Youth, that Sacred Bones released under their old band name. Their record will come out next year. And, based on this Northside Festival performance as part of the Sacred Bones [...]
Photo credit: Andrew St. Clair The streets of Williamsburg belonged to musicians, even more than normal, for the four days that the Northside Festival staked its ground. There was a constant bustle of badge-clad press agents, photographers, managers and agents in addition to guitarists toting their instruments and lead singers trailed by groupies. Booze was certainly also flowing freely. At Good Co. on Hope Street, Jameson hosted a party featuring their whiskey and McClure’s pickle juice. A young lady I met at the bar admitted, “I’m [...]

This year’s Northside Festival was a year not to forget. Between it’s 20,000 square foot trade show, an eclectic mix of musicians, interesting panels, free booze (and a film festival to boot), it set the stage (literally) for summer festivals to come. At the Northside headquarters, there were spread young entrepreneurs promoting their companies. Hangover pills, tech startups, iPhone city apps and many more businesses repped their products through free goodies and detailed explanations. The warehouse was also the home to diverse music industry panels. The “Music Now” panels provided insight into the industry through music [...]

[Photos by Jill Harrison at For the Love of Brooklyn] The way that the brothers Jennings, Van and Lain Carney - aka Pontiak - are able to live their lives as musicians is about as far from the New York experience as you can get. Where our musicians live in cramped apartments, borrow or rent practice space, and live near the places where they play, the Carneys record and practice their music on their own farm/studio in rural Virginia, where they decamped to after a five year stint in the Baltimore scene, where they played with compatriots [...]

Ai Weiwei showing "Sunflower Seeds" at the Tate Modern It may seem unfair to compare one of the most renowned artists and activists in China –and the world— to aspiring American painters, photographers, and sculptors. But the contrast between Ai Weiwei, the subject of a new documentary that screened last week in Williamsburg, and the dozen or so Brooklyn artists whose work I saw in Williamsburg and Greenpoint the prior weekend, could not be more severe. In the eight days of music, film, and art that comprised the Northside Festival , the documentary about Ai [...]

Check out this stunning live video by Neglakay Productions of Il Abanico performing " The Light " at FREECANDY in Brooklyn. From the "Crossing Colors" EP (which you can download for free on the band's Bandcamp ), this track is possibly the best example of what this band all about. The video does an incredible job capturing Il Abanico's energetic essence as performers that you hear in the song's buildup-not an easy feat. The band also performed at Spike Hill in Williamsburg last Sunday in the Paper Garden Records showcase as part of [...]

[photos by acidjack] After catching an exclusive acoustic warmup set the day before , we could not wait for Olivia Tremor Control 's main Northside Festival set at Music Hall of Williamsburg . After short sets by the newly revamped Dinosaur Feathers and Laura Stevenson & the Cans , OTC took the stage and immediately tore into "The Opera House", one of their most rocking numbers. Despite being on one of the festival's bigger stages, OTC made the show feel like our own private window onto a living [...]
![Field Mouse: June 16, 2012 Spike Hill [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4345641_lg.jpg)
[Photos by acidjack] With a sound rooted firmly in 90s acts like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, the Breeders and Sonic Youth, Field Mouse is a very easy band for me to like. Apparently the L Magazine agreed, listing the band as one of the " 8 Bands You Need to Hear " recently, which was also the organizing theme for this daytime Northside Festival showcase at lovely little Spike Hill . Singer-guitarist Rachel Browne is an engaging frontwoman, with sweetly-scarred vocals and a great gift for awkward-but-hilarious stage banter (her reaction to an audience member [...]

In the beginning, The L Magazine ’s Northside Festival was a small-scale celebration of Williamsburg and Greenpoint's indie music scene at a handful of venues in those neighborhoods, each night bringing a selection of the area's best local bands. By its fourth year, the event had grown into Brooklyn's own mini-South by Southwest; Northside's headquarters, once a bar's back room, stretched out to fill an airplane hangar-size warehouse, and its scope expanded to encompass film, art, and entrepreneurship. But as far as we're concerned, the festival's biggest draw was still the music. For four days, big-name acts like Jens [...]

[Photos by hi and lo] One of the benefits of presenting your own showcase at this year's Northside Festival was access to the press/VIP lounge located at the Williamsburg bar Good Company , which was (heavily) sponsored by Jameson Black Barrel and featured ample free doses of the aforementioned spirit plus, more importantly, some rare and intimate acoustic shows. The highlight of all of them was this set by the legendary Athens, GA band Olivia Tremor Control , who are now fully back from their mid-2000s hiatus and working on [...]
