I'm lucky enough to have a ticket to see Craig Finn at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco in a couple of weeks, but really, this NPR Tiny Desk Concert is just gorgeous and perfect, and should do in a pinch if you can't see him live. As the man said, "All these mournful, inward-facing songs (including the unreleased "Jeremiah's Blues") require is the Hold Steady singer, his acoustic guitar and the indispensable pedal steel of Ricky Ray Jackson." And that pedal steel? That pedal steel will break your heart.
For Valentine's Day, affairs of the heart and the intricacies of intimacy.

And it's animal joyous...whatever that might mean.

On February 7th Sharon Van Etten will release her third Lp via Jagjaguwar luckily you can listen to the album in full a week early, courtesy of NPR. We've already listened to first single ' Serpents ' which dropped late last year and ' Tramp ' is where Van Etten evolves into her own. A great twelve track effort which will surely be a highlight of 2012. Standout cuts from ' Tramp ' would be ' Kevin's ' and ' We Are Fine .' Click on the link below to start your week off on a high note. [...]
It's colder than yesterday, far more seasonal at 38°, but I don't mind. Neither does Gracie. I think it's her favorite sort of day. She runs outside round and round the yard then comes in panting and walks over to me for a pat. I find her fur cold to the touch, especially her ears. Winter is the easiest season to see because the sun and sky have hues different from any other season. The blue is sharper and the sun looks far more muted. When I look out the window, I can see that cold and feel it [...]

Nada Surf played their album release party last at NYC's Bowery Ballroom. "The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy" was released yesterday (stream it here ) and if you haven't had a chance to listen, the album feels like their most personal affair to date. Last night's show captures the staying power from a band that had been all but written off in the mid 902s with a song that could have landed the quartet on one of those compilation albums of one hit wonders. Nada Surf-Waiting for Something [mp3] [...]
Eyewitness, first-person accounts of the January 2011 Egyptian uprising.

Seven years of waiting are over. The man with the golden voice is back and his new album, Old Ideas , is streaming over at NPR . Thanks to COS for the heads up.

So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band or a show preview or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we throw a change-up... strike that - let's call it a round up. Most of these videos are of bands we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won't be telling you much about those bands themselves, just some musings that really aren't worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a million. Hold on to your hats! [...]

Loyal readers of this site expect one thing: words. Lots of them. Preferably with at least four syllables. And, typically, we are happy to oblige. The world of indie music has reached a point, however, at which there are more new songs released monthly than there are words in the OED . As such, in our efforts to wax eloquent about each drop in the deluge of exciting new music, we run the risk of letting our words get in the way of that which they are trying to serve. Thus, in an effort to increase the quantity [...]
NPR has a roundup of " the next big band " from various cities across America. Can't speak about many of them, but Portland's Y La Bamba is a great selection. Anyone on board the Andrew Bird train would be wise to take a trip with Y La Bamba. Their new single is embedded above thanks to Tender Loving Empire. The new album will drop February 28th.

Chairlift is set to surface their second Lp next week (January 24th) but you can get an early listen (via KCRW) to the fabulous ' Something ,' below. Fans of the Brooklyn natives will notice a real maturity in lead singers Caroline Polacheck's range, ' Cool As A Fire ' & ' Take It Out On Me ' are are simply gorgeous. We'd be willing to bet this album will be placed among many year end best lists, its that good! Sidenote - We're hoping ' Peculiar Paradise ' (which [...]

[mp3] Laura Gibson: "La Grande" Long has Laura Gibson been the purveyor of hushed folk melodies imbued with a distinct poignancy and maturity that set her apart from her peers. Gibson does not deviate from this formula on her new record for Barsuk, La Grande , that comes out next week (1/24). There's a stillness to these songs, that makes the record accessible only to those with the patience to actually listen. While that may not garner much attention in the world of 30 second streaming sound [...]
