One to Watch by Chris Fullerton Chris Fullerton is a Music and Film writer. He lives in Austin, Texas. One of the most exciting bands I had the pleasure of seeing (twice) at SXSW was Jacksonville, Florida rock band, THE PINZ , who were in Austin to promote their latest EP, ANTI-COMPLACENCY LEAGUE. The band consists of brothers Walter Jerk (vocals/guitar) and Johnny Wyatt (bass/backing vocals) who started playing together about five years ago, and Walter’s [...]

Deirdre O'Callaghan Sometimes the best kinds of surprises are the ones you already knew were coming. For example - everyone knew The National was making a new record. High Violet came out way back in Spring 2010, touring behind it wrapped in late 2011, and they've since been posting updates from the studio via Instagram . Everyone knows they've not been idle, and yet it was hard not to feel a shiver when the official press release arrived in the inbox, announcing the album was done and [...]

First wave of NXNE announcements here but yes I'm looking forward to the free show at Yonge Dundas Square on Friday June 14, headlined by The National . NXNE takes place in venues across Toronto from June 10 to 16.

CMW hasn't even come and gone and NXNE (June 10-16) is already announcing bands. The biggest news is the free Yonge Dundas Square show on June 14th from The National . Their new album should hit the streets about a month before that. Also among the announced acts are my personal favorites, the never disappointing Greatest Rock N' Roll Band In the World, The Supersuckers . See the rest of the names here .
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Deirdre O'Callaghan The National are the first big name confirmed for this year's 2013 North By Northeast music and film festival set for Toronto in June and they'll play a free headlining concert at Yonge-Dundas Square on June 14. The group will be touring behind their as-yet untitled new studio album which comes out in May, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2010 release High Violet [...]

Friends @ Lee's Palace: photo by Michael Ligon First, apologies for the lack of posts this summer. I wish I could say I was off on same fabulous adventures, but no I've just been lazy. Oh and pooped from work and not wanting to deal with the summer heat. It's not to say that I've stopped going to shows - I've been to a bunch of good ones this summer and over the next week or so will make an effort to at the very least get up the photos. Don't hold your breath [...]
![[MPMF 2012] Artist Capsule: Black Owls](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4484671_lg.jpg)
Black Owl’s name suits their dark, rough sound remarkably well. There are comfortable swaths of American roots-rock, 70’s folk stomp, and 60’s guitar pop. However, the whole thing gets a proto-punk tint with the occasionally aggressive guitar work and oblique lyrics. The result is a strong-backed collection of wooly guitar rock that’s really going for something. What that something is exactly, I don’t know. Maybe they don’t either. But everything comes together into a hauntingly compelling sound that can’t be ignored. Plus,I bet these guys wear all black, strum their guitars really aggressively, and yelp into [...]

Usually for this segment we lean our focus towards one song, but when I went to write about a song by this band, I couldn't just mention one. So, I decided to tell you about three brilliant songs which You've GOT to Hear! I honestly can't control myself each time Zulu Winter come on. They make you want to dance, sing and also think about their clever lyrics. When I saw them at NXNE , I was completely blown away with their talent. The first song I adore by the group is Bitter Moon . The light [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive Antiheroes Facebook Two recent brazen shootings in Toronto -- one on June 3 at the giant Eaton Centre shopping mall that left two dead and seven injured, and another on July 17 at a barbecue that left two dead and 24 injured -- has resulted in the perception that "Toronto the Good" has developed a gang problem. That has also become a hip-hop community problem. Ten [...]

Purity Ring @ Wrongbar: photo by Michael Ligon I went a little less hardcore during NXNE this year and yet I'm still late on posting about it. Overall there were some good new artists I'd discovered year this although no one had really grabbed me outright like some artists had in previous years. With that said let's get to it. Wednesday June 13, 2012 I started off the first day of the festival, Wednesday, first picking up my media pass at the Hyatt Regency and [...]
![NXNE 2012: Yamantaka // Sonic Titan @ Sneaky Dee’s [June 16, 2012]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4373347_lg.jpg)
The last show of the night and coverage of NXNE 2012. After seeing Teen Tits Wild Wives play at Sneaky Dee's. I was very excited for the secret guest who happened to be Yamantaka // Sonic Titan . It's been a whirlwind for them this year, their album has been long-listed for Polaris Music Prize and touring everywhere and captivating audiences with their Asian prog "Noh-Wave" show. OMG Yamantaka // Sonic Titan at Sneaky Dee's @ nxnefest instagr.am/p/L9vMVkNKY7/ [...]

After spending most of the night at the Garrison. I decided to head down as quickly to Sneaky Dee's for the secret guest at 2am. I swear Toronto needs to overhaul their traffic system. Usually the weekend of NXNE , there is the set-up for MMVMAs and part of College Street is closed off for "Taste Of Italy". Let's say getting from one venue to another is hard task if you don't have a bike. Finally after an hour I made it to the venue. Yay made it in Sneaky [...]

With the advice from the Pop Montreal people. I stayed to check out Montreal's Jef Barbara at the Garrison during NXNE . I didn't know who he was but I was told that his music is really fun. Here are my tweets. Jef Barbara at the Garrison @ popmontreal @ nxnefest instagr.am/p/L9Y7JhNKbW/ — PhotogMusic.com (@photogmusic) June 17, 2012 Hey it's Shub playing [...]
