Ears Wide Open: Louis Friend

Ears Wide Open: Louis Friend x x x x x x x x x x Ah, the sweet fruits of collaboration. Ken Oak and Ed Gorski (as Oak and Gorski ) make "cello rock," a strain of pop that features Oak's big stringed instrument. Nicholas Ruth is the former guitarist/backup singer in Malbec (and now a composer, songwriter and producer) whom we discovered last year delving, pretty deliciously, into electro-soul and folk . Together, the three are Louis Friend , and the trio's [...]

Hand Crafted Oak

Hand Crafted Oak It's been a tumultuous few days, what with travel arrangements, holiday plans, and various other factors away from the digital realm. Having arrived securely at Christmas home base, however, things are back on track.....apart from the best of 2009, which did indeed get rearranged several times at the last minute, consarnit. The World Can Be Saved By Music

The World Can Be Saved By Music I love this album cover. It's the latest album, Good Advice, Bad Advice from cello and acoustic guitar duo Ed Gorski and Ken Oak also known as Oak & Gorski . It's got an organic string sound, but just the right amount of contemporary pop to make it accessible to the mainstream. Oak & Gorski - Pretty Far Gone (mp3) (buy)

cello rock anyone?

cello rock anyone? Oak & Gorski are two guys from LA and they're a bit different to other bands out there. They do the whole cello and guitar thing. And they do it pretty well dammit! Billboard Magazine describes the duo as "soulful" and "calming", and yeah, from this song, you definitely feel that. Hmm. I really enjoyed listening to this song.  Even the name of this band kicks ass.  Makes me think of trees. Anyway I have to admit I am quite partial to a bit of Ye Olde of country & Western – but please don’t freak out just yet! [...]

Tonight in L.A.: White Rabbits, Chairlift, Art Brut

Tonight in L.A.: White Rabbits, Chairlift, Art Brut [Birthday greetings go out today to Paul McCartney ... in L.A. tonight we have something of a Brooklyn Invasion:] Brooklyn's White Rabbits new album "It's Frightening" was produced by Britt Daniel of Spoon, and the music brims with the same spare-but-urgent qualities (that's the video for "Percussion Gun," above). The sextet headlines the Troubadour tonight with fellow Brooklyners the Subjects . ... Also in from the borough is electro-pop trio Chairlift [pictured], who made their mark with the song from the [...]

Tonight in L.A.: Rosemary’s Garden, Kenan Bell [Birthday cheers to Steve Tyler, even if Blender magazine won't be celebrating any more ...] I'll start with a couple of fun-sounding under-the-radar things: Canadian genre-hoppers Hot Panda [pictured] plays the early set at the Silverlake Lounge. Then there is the electro-cool Alaska in Winter at Bordello. [Sample both below]. ... Rosemary's Garden , the new folk-rock project of Gringo Star's Michael-Louis de Terre, celebrates the release of "La Musique du Jardin" at the Kress in Hollywood. ...
