A year ago, two unassuming 20-somethings took the stage at The Barbary for a crowd of maybe fifty people. With a DIY backdrop consisting of a bed sheet and some colored spot lights, Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (production) presented their in-progress project Purity Ring with a youthful vibrancy and hopeful exuberance. It would be easy to confuse 21-year-old instrumentalist Corin Roddick with a much more experienced producer. According to the label 4AD, Roddick began experimenting with hip-hop and R&B beats during a six month tour in 2009 or 2010, and shortly thereafter got Gobble Gobble band mate Megan James to lay down vocals for what would become the song "Ungirthed," released in January of 2011 under the moniker Purity Ring. Purity Ring appeared on the scene in early 2011 with their single, “Ungirthed,” a track oozing with chopped and screwed qualities reminiscent of electro-wizard Star Slinger . Before I'd heard Purity Ring 's debut LP Shrines I knew it was going to be huge, but I didn't know just how huge it would be. It's buoyed by its two lead tracks "Obedear" and "Fineshrine" , two of the strongest tracks of the year, but not even the best from the album. Purity Ring are another Canadian act making waves, floating the future beat/dubstep sway to the surface of the alternative music world. A life-raft of credibility for modern pop music to cling to. "Fineshrine" possesses a spacious, beaming euphoria that could easily fill a stadium. The vocal reminds me a little of Metric. If you listen closely to Purity Ring's brand of spacey electro-pop, it can start to sound a bit like soft indie-rock vocals laid over bells and whistles from the future. It's a sound that may not be for everyone, but Megan James and Corin Roddick have a knack for injecting a alluring warmth into the cold tones and beats of their arrangements. Well that was pretty quick. It was only a week before someone took Purity Ring 's "Obedear" and used it in a mashup. Released yesterday, The Hood Internet's "Pesobedear" features the rhyming and flow of A$AP Rocky along with the electronic sound of Purity Ring, and it fits perfectly.
