By Keeyahtay Lewis Last year Thrice announced that they would be going on hiatus after a final tour. For those who know me, it is well known that Thrice is my favorite band. So this made me a little bummed, but I knew it would also mean that I would get a chance to see them at least a couple more times. Thursday night, May 24, was the first of two nights I would be seeing them. They came into ...

The six week trek will kickoff on May 4th in San Diego and will hit nearly every major city in the country, including a May 13th hometown performance at the Masquerade . Since the release of their first full-length, Garden Window , last November, the band has been riding a wave of critical praise and increasing popular support, and yet another [...]
After playing over 200 shows in 2009 and 2010, O’Brother took to the studio to record their new first full-length album, “Garden Window”. The album was released in November of 2011 and now the O’Brother boys are back on the road, co-headlining a tour with Junius. We caught up with lead singer Tanner Merritt before their show in Denver to chat about the new album and life on the road. Garden Window is your first full-length album – did you have a clear idea going in of how [...]
O'Brother Exclusive Interview: O'Brother January 29, 2012 by Chuck Norton The moral of the fable about the tortoise and the hare is that those lacking focus and determination have the opportunity to exceed the success of those whose effort is compromised by a tendency to dillydally. In the context of music, this is often the case. When the band O'Brother formed in 2006 in Atlanta it would have been difficult to predict that, six years later, the band would find [...]

"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase that applies to music as much as it does Darwinian theory; artists must constantly evolve lest they want to go the way of the dodo. No band embodies this better than Thrice , who have made it a constant goal to readapt and outdo themselves with each new project. It's ironic, then, that this band, despite churning out album upon album with each different than the last, is in the midst of a farewell tour. After a career spanning fourteen years, the Orange County four-piece is calling it quits for the time [...]

Were it not for Favorite Gentlemen , I fear that some of the South's rock gems would go unnoticed to the rest of the country. Fortunately, the Manchester Orchestra -helmed label is around and ready to bring us some of the finest acts Georgia and beyond has to offer, like O'Brother . Drawing from every prefixed rock sub-genre you can think of, this unpeggable Atlanta outfit's latest album, Garden Window , is a gritty 11-track collection of genre-bending rock music. The band's lead single, "Lo," is a low-tuned, Queen of the Stone Age-inspired [...]
O'Brother's Tanner Merritt On Trailers, Thrice & 120 Minutes
Atlanta's heavy, experimental-rock quintet O'Brother has been hitting the road hard in 2012. Rocks Off covered the band's headlining gig at Warehouse Live back in March, and tomorrow the band ... Continue reading "O'Brother's Tanner Merritt On Trailers, Thrice & 120 Minutes" >
VIDEO: O’Brother – “Lo”
Hard to believe that it's been almost six months since O'Brother released their first full-length, Garden Window —it's a record I still listen to at least every other day and I'm always discovering new and unexpected things lurking in the shadows of the music. Given that time, I'm a little surprised it took so long for the band to produce their first video, but after watching it I'll say it was undoubtedly worth the wait. Volatile, whiskey-chugging youths committing random acts of violence and vandalism in a cold, desolate industrial town. Sounds rad, right? An abandoned church [...]

O'Brother's Tanner Merritt on the art of melodic rock and the band's new album, Garden Window
The genre term "melodic metal" sounds a bit ridic', but it's not a bad descriptor for bands such as O'Brother . The band mixes heavy rock and atmospheric, ambient melodies.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
“ALL SHALL FLOAT”: NEW JUNIUS VIDEO, TOUR
An extremely welcome surprise in 2011 was Reports From The Threshold Of Death, a throbbing, gauzy dream-rock record from Boston's Junius (read here). One shitty major magazine described Reports as the intersection of Neurosis and The Smiths, but a sharper listen reveals Deftones-sized hooks and melancholic majesty more akin to Loveless by My Bloody Valentine and [...]
