6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude. Dan Mangan is something new to me, which is a wholly different kind of tragedy I'm not prepared to deal with [...]

CitR: Describe your sound in your own words. Dan: It’s a lyric-heavy collection of indie rock and folk and jazz and several other ambiguous and vague genres. CitR: Since you were in the UK last summer , what have you been up to? Dan: We toured basically all year. Over the last winter we recorded this newest record, Oh Fortune , and kind of made it on and off the road, and in February or March [...]

On his latest full-length album Oh Fortune , Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Mangan shows that he’s no indie one trick pony, as he grows out of his days of folk ballads and evolves into a fuller, more pop-y sound. That is not to say he ignores his past - rather, he builds on it for an effect that is both thought provoking and fun to listen to. Mangan opens the album with the tongue-twisting “About As Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All”, a waltz-y, uplifting melody that is nowhere [...]
The leech scene from Stand By Me has been making me physically uncomfortable for twenty-five years. Every time Gordie says "Hey Vern, there's something on your neck," and the camera pans to the giant, gray, slug-like creature adhered to Vern's flesh, I vocalize involuntarily and give a little shiver. I don't know what the experience [...]

Dan Mangan at The Mercury Lounge (07/26/11) Photo : D. Caplan Way back in July, Vancouver's Dan Mangan played a show at The Mercury Lounge where he debuted a bunch of new songs off of his then forthcoming album, Oh Fortune . Well, the new LP dropped last Tuesday (Sep 27) via Arts and Crafts and the baritone voiced troubadour is back on the road supporting his impressive new work (truth be told, Dan hardly ever takes a break). For those of [...]

Oh, Dan. What happened to you? What horrendous, depressing event was inflicted on you in the last few years? In the past, the albums of Canadian folk artist Dan Mangan have hardly been easy-listening, and sure, there was always an underlying sense of sadness to the way that Mangan composed his songs, but it was done in a way that kept things optimistic. What we have here in Oh Fortune is something even grimmer, darker, and really rather more depressing. The contrast with past albums that is initially more obvious [...]
If you've read any reviews of Dan Mangan 's record that dropped on Tuesday, you've likely heard the same sentiment echoed over and over: It's the sort of album that doesn't fit neatly into any one category or genre. Oh Fortune is a document of one man at ever-changing coordinates, and embracing it. Mangan takes a step back to allow his songs to take shape in a way that feels organic, letting them spread out and breathe rather than twisting and folding them into any one genre container. Try out [...]
Dan Mangan's Oh Fortune, out today on Arts & Crafts is easily one of the 2011 releases I've been most eagerly anticipating. Mangan's Nice, Nice, Very Nice, a delicate, catchy, chuckle-inducing, heart-clutching record remains one of my most played albums and despite a hundred full listens, Mangan's cleverness, wit and penchant for pop hooks in [...]

Dan Mangan - Follow up to 2009's exceptionally fine Nice, Nice Very Nice continues the Vancouver songwriter's steady shift from acoustic-wielding folk singer to burgeoning indie alt-pop-with-an-edge artisan...the tales are as witty and sharply etched as when he started out but the colorful creative palette in the studio has grown significantly...Mangan calls the experiences of the past few years as "life changing stuff" // Release : Oh Fortune (September 27, Arts and Crafts) // Sounds like : the ambitious new project picks up Nice -ly where the last [...]

by teepoo Dan Mangan has officially announced that his third album will be released on September 27th via Arts and Crafts. Here's a track off the new record titled Oh Fortune . It's a little different than compared to his older stuff. It's almost got more of a rock edge to it than the simple guitar-folk tunes he presented in the past. Despite this, he's still able to sing in a way that speaks to my heart as his voice pierces through all the layers. [...]

Dan Mangan just dropped a new single called Oh Fortune from the upcoming album of the same name. The album will drop on Septemeber 27th. Have a listen to the new single " Oh Fortune ".
It's hard to believe that a whole two years have passed since Dan Mangan released his formative and fantastic Nice, Nice, Very Nice LP. I'm not really sure where the time went, but Mangan seemed to make the most of it, somehow finding the time between touring commitments to write and record a brand new album. On September 27, Arts & Crafts will release his third record, Oh Fortune , an 11-track document of Mangan's ever-expanding scope as an arranger and lyricist. That growth is written all over the album's title track, which plays [...]

Dan Mangan at Sasquatch 2011 Photo : Drake Lelane ( more ) As a gift to his fans, Dan Mangan just made the title track from his forthcoming album Oh Fortune available at his website as a free stream and download. Ever the road warrior, Dan's about to head out on a bunch of mostly European and Canadian festival dates, but in between those big appearances he's sneaking in a one-off show at the Mercury Lounge on July 29 [...]
