Before Edwyn Collins launched a long solo career and lent his voice to one of the best film soundtracks of the 1990's, Empire Records , he began his foray into music as the frontman for postpunk act, the Nu-Sonics , in 1976. Three years later the Nu-Sonics became Orange Juice , an act that would earn the young Collins and his three bandmates a Top 40 honor for Rip It Up . I've always loved the theatrical element to Collins' voice and it's at its most powerful in the material of Orange Juice, mixed amongst postpunk [...]
On the record, New Order are not only one of the most influential groups in music history's timeline, but my personal favorite act, of all time. At this point I've probably heard everything they've ever recorded and 1983's Power, Corruption & Lies remains my vote for their best release. Confusion was one of the most important tracks New Order would produce over their nearly three decade long career, establishing the dancier side of the group's sound and inspiring the scope of electronic music through today. The heydey of nightlife, for [...]

South Carolina is quickly becoming the coolest place you've never been to. The recent success of Washed Out has people taking note of an area that's revealing itself to be a hot bed for blissed out, bedroom produced, lo-fi acts. Friend of Washed Out, Toro Y Moi , is the next reluctant star in the making, securing a spot on tour with Islands . One further degree of separation leads us to the subject of this post, Columbia, South Carolina's The Choir Quit . Coining their music grizzlepop , duo William Busbee [...]
I've taken some much needed time away from the shadows of Chicago's skyline, cavorting off to the West for a few days in Las Vegas and now, LA. It's sunny, I'm all smiles and in some lovely ironic twist the internet only works while sitting outside. It's been a wonderfully self-reflective trip and I've had the perfect soundtrack the past few days thanks to Barcelona quintet Extraperlo . Disco is a term that most definitely applies to the music of Extraperlo, but not the disco belonging to club nights and famous DJs. Spanish lyrics and breezy, [...]

Take a bit of our beloved VEGA , some New Order and dash of CSS 's spunky production and you have a pretty good description of Butterfly Bones . Hailing from San Francisco, the foursome is currently touring America in support of their elegant but energetic "Pretty Feelings" EP . What's that you say? You want to see them perform live? Well, if you are in DC they will be performing on Sept. 10th for the fantastic MIXTAPE anniversary party (click here for more info), if not, click [...]

Here's the adorable new video for Paddling Ghosts , by Dan Deacon , directed by Natalie Van Den Dungen. This is the first video from Dan's sophomore album, the haunting and fantastic Bromst . Check out Dan Deacon 's MySpace page for a slew of upcoming tour dates. Seriously, his live experience is not to be missed. And here's a personal favorite from his latest album: Dan Deacon - Surprise Stefani (250 kbps)

One of my favorite films of the past couple years is surely The Diving Bell and the Butterfly , the film version of French journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby 's memoir. Bauby, then Editor-In-Chief of French Elle , suffered a massive stroke and awoke to find himself afflicted with a rare form of paralysis called locked-in-syndrome . Mentally aware, but physically unable to move any muscles except for the eyes, Bauby crafted his memoir over 20 months by communicating, one letter at a time, with blinks from his left eyelid. The film is harrowing, [...]

Jamie Lidell is one of those musicians I've managed to miss for one reason or another, every single time he's come to town. This weekend I intend to change this by catching his show at the Congress Theater alongside Tortured Soul . I admittedly didn't enjoy 2008's Jim nearly as much as 2005's Multiply , but it would have been a nearly impossible task for Lidell to top the ambitious Multiply and I eagerly await seeing what the crafty Brit has in store live. If you're in Chicago and [...]

Bryan and I have shared our thoughts on MJ's passing and we're ready to get back to our normal posting. I've spent the past few days crate-digging for lost MJ gold and as we wrap up our King Of Pop posts, I'd like to leave you with a few of my favorite lost remixes and forgotten tracks. Michael Jackson - Rock With You (Masters At Work Remix) (320 kbps) Michael Jackson - Bad (Tag Team Mix) (160 kbps) Michael Jackson - In [...]

I have a lot of strong opinions on how the public has chosen to process the death of a previously persecuted man. Pop culture is a fickle beast, embracing innocence, mocking misery and championing legend. As I follow the news coverage, the phrase "If only Michael had been around to see this" is reiterated ad nauseam. Those words have haunted my thoughts for days, said with such predictability and lack of meaning. We go through the motions, speaking what sounds good on camera, thoughtful in conversation. But the blank stares that have accompanied every [...]

I am struck by the immediacy in which it happened. One day he is rehearsing for one of the biggest challenges in his professional career - a series of big budget concerts in England that would eventually, if deemed successful, parlay into a global tour. A man who would soon turn 51 years old, but whom we haven't seen actually perform since 2004, and that was a very brief cameo. Was he physically fit? Was he frail? In a wheelchair, or doing quadruple spins? It doesn't matter now, I guess. I feel saddened that it appears he died [...]
I fucking love Craig David. I fucking love Zoot Woman. And the only person I fucking love even more is Joshua Pressman for giving me this track. Last year Zoot Woman released a second single for their (finally) upcoming 2009 album Things Are What They Used To Be. The single was titled Live In My Head and this cover of Craig David's Seven Days was the little-known second accompanying track on the single. I'm currently placing my bets that this track will join Live In My Head, Saturation [...]
Let's get experimental. The theme of the week is experimental sounds. Tobacco - Dirt (ft. Aesop Rock) (256 kbps) Atlas Sound - Quarantined (160 kbps) Black Dice - Night Creme (239 kbps) Fuck Buttons - Bright Tomorrow (192 kbps) Avey Tare & Kría Brekkan - Sis Around The Sándmill (128 kbps)
If you're a good little internet sleuth then you've already put the pieces together that we've been hard at work planning a grand fête to celebrate our first year. With this post we are proud to unveil our labor of love, GET CREAMED OH NINE! to be held Saturday, May 16th at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. We've teamed up with one of our favorite acts, Austin's VEGA to bring you their first Chicago appearance and the release party for their debut EP. A mashup of electronic and rock genres, [...]
We're going to celebrate Swedish Sunday this week in the form of a little visual diversion. It's no secret that Familjen is one of my favorite Swedes and we've featured him in full before . But this week I don't want to write about him, I want to share his Swedish Grammy award-winning video for Det Snurrar I Min Skalle , directly by the immensely talented director, editor and artist Johan Söderberg . Söderberg has lent his hand to videos for everyone from Beyonce to U2 to The Knife to [...]
This week's edition of The Weekly Everything is dedicated to hangover Saturdays and Kap10Kurt for making my Friday night by playing Clubfeet to a crowd of people who really just wanted to dance to Kid Cudi's Day 'N Nite . My fondest musical memories of Chicago nightlife were not made by residents of the 312 area code, but by the people that visited and imparted their eclectic tastes upon the city. So, if you're reading this, thank you! Kleerup - On My Own Again (216 kbps VBR) [...]

Iconic record label Warp is turning 20 and is inviting you to put together the ultimate compilation album. Few labels have had a more profound impact on the face of electronic music or a continuous output of such momentous quality. Summing it all up is an impossible task and probably why they need your help. The upcoming compilation will include the fan favorite tracks as well as the comments left on the website. Warp will also stage a few anniversary events to celebrate. Looks like I need to plan one more holiday trip this year! Some [...]

People love to hate on mainstream pop music. It's easy to dismiss pop music as one dimensional and pop musicians as fabricated entertainers, but the interesting thing about the genre is that beneath the perfect bodies and fake smiles, are a bevy of truly talented voices, crafting the subtleties of the music behind the scenes. I recently introduced you Miike Snow , a trio sure to be making waves in 2009. A project with decidedly indie-leanings, two of the members are better known as powerhouse pop production duo Bloodshy & Avant . Today I'd like [...]
Long ago, in a far off time we had a little feature called The Weekly Everything . At its inception, The Weekly Everything was an attempt for me to post every single track that arrived in my inbox. I very much viewed CreamTeam as a effort of love that would have a very small niche audience. In turn, I wanted to support all the small acts out there. Sometimes my humbleness gets the better of me. This little blog that could has obviously grown far beyond the imagined. We have no need to relegate new talent [...]
