![Olenka & The Autumn Lovers and Musk Ox @ Mercury Lounge [October 13, 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3790622_lg.jpg)
Olenka and the Autumn Lover and Musk Ox played a lovely intimate show at Ottawa's Mercury Lounge . The show was presented by Blackbox Concert Series . I really love the music of Olenka and the Autumn Lovers. Since it was fall time, this couldn't come at a right time. The show started off with Ottawa's Musk Ox. This time he was solo. It was a very mellow set. Very calm and relaxing. [...]
GUYS, WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT! HPX 2011 is next week, and I'm afraid we've fallen short in our attempt to post a song from every aoutfit playing the fest this year, but we've made a pretty sizeable dent in the list (sorry to those we didn't get posted, our bad, we tried!). So here's one last kick at the can, another jumbo list of jams from bands playing in Halifax next week, so if you like something you hear below, check the schedule and go see them play! [...]

![Shawn Clarke – Like Birds Too Tired To Fly [Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3707269_lg.jpg)
The Toronto music scene works in crazy and closely knit ways. This is the case for Shawn Clarke . It's one of those blink and you miss kind of things when you see a musician/band live at shows. Looking through the photos that I've taken, I was surprised to capture Shawn in other bands he sometimes or used to play. So why not check out what his music. Shawn Clarke is a folk singer/songwriter from Toronto. He previously played in bands like Olenka and the Autumn Lovers [...]

Stories told, songs sung. It's simple this history of ours. Tales of murder, pain, love and loss are written daily and forgotten instantly, but the best are passed from generation to generation like currency, land or genes. In a time where the public is more consumed by those that find and hoard to fuel their own greed or sickness, folklorist Henry Svec - last heard around here under the anonymity of The CFL Sessions - spends his time unearthing stories and documenting melodies for the community. Folk Songs of Canada Now [...]

Awhile back I decided to use a film camera and take some photos from this year's NXNE Festival in Toronto. Bought a roll of B&W Illford 36 exposure film. Wanted to see what the results were on printed photo/film. Took me awhile to get the film developed and scanned the good photos I took (Wish I got a better scanner. Anyone know a good brand to buy?) It would be too much to type up on which acts [...]

The set times for the Out of the Box Festival were announced today, which probably means we should preview the festival. I'll be the first to admit that I don't really know a whole lot about this festival as it seems to happen whenever I'm out of town. Weekend Passes Available at Rotate This and Soundscapes Here's the set times. I'm not going to bother reformatting it into something more HTML friendly because I am currently on a mac typing this and it's like driving an automatic after years of driving stick. It's weird. [...]

We have a few passes to give away for the excellent Out of the Box Festival happening on the long weekend of August 1st. The festival consists of a strong group of local musicians as well as random art installations. All in all, a great way to spend a weekend if you are in Toronto. Check out the lineup! Day 1 July 29th @ Great Hall. Doors at 9 pm ORIGAMI OF THE GIANTS as presented by Jessica Stuart- A room celebrating the Art of Origami [...]
by teepoo On July 29th-31st there is a rad three day festival at the Toronto Underground Cinema and the Great Hall. It's a new mini festival called the Out of the Box Music and Arts Festival . There are a ton of great acts including Olenka and the Autumn Lovers , my new loves Papermaps , Foxes in Fiction, The Cheap Speakers, Heartbeat Hotel, Entire Cities and a ton more you can find on the Facebook Page . Apparently, part [...]

Facebook What: Out Of The Box Music & Arts Festival - a new mini-festival spread out over three days and seven shows and showcasing some of the region's best up-and-coming acts Why: Because it's the August long weekend (even though it's in July), because each show features art vendors and potentially entertaining themes (3D! Origami!), because there's all-ages matinee shows and because it's a lot of music for not a lot of money Who: Olenka & The Autumn Lovers , Heartbeat Hotel , [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

This is the story of NXNE told through the perspective of its softer moments, of the things that were there before and will remain to stay long after the last hashtag.
![Live in Bellwoods on June 17, 2011 [NXNE 2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3543429_lg.jpg)
June 17th was the first day of the Live in Bellwoods : the NXNE Picnic Series 2011. This is their second year doing this. It is basically bands playing in Trinity Bellwoods and doing a stripped down acoustic sessions. Great way to enjoy the weather and chill out to the music. On the second day I got to see: Freedom Or Death Doldrums [...]

Frank Yang One perennial highlight - okay, for two years - of my SXSW adventures was throwing day parties where we could invite Japanese Action Comic Punk outfit Peelander-Z to wreak havoc. So it was nice to see that not only were the Peelanders in town for NXNE , but they had an all-ages afternoon show scheduled at Sneaky Dee's on the Saturday. I guess Toronto's still getting used to the idea of having shows when it's still daylight out, because the gig was only attended [...]

So, here's the deal. A few days ago I was informed that my squad will be leaving the relief effort on the 22nd (This upcoming Wednesday). This is good for you because: A) The Indie Sabbath will be back in full force sooner than planned, bringing you that same material that has been described as "Cooler than a polar bear's toe nail" and "So fresh it'll turn your chest into a pair of class cutters." B) [There is no B. Actually there are practically no Bees anymore either . [...]

Anton Corbijn It only took about six minutes via Twitter to announce the forty albums long-listed for the sixth edition of the Polaris Music Prize , we'll have the next three weeks to argue over their relative merits and come July 6, when the ten record-strong short list is announced, another couple months to hash those out before the September 19 gala in Toronto when a yet-to-be-determined grand jury declares their pick for the best Canadian album of the past year. And there's more at stake this year than in the past, [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News NXNE wouldn't be the party that it is without the daytime showcases, BBQs and oh so mysterious "secret shows." So for every free burger, cheap drink and secret set [...]
