I stumbled across One For The Team recently after digging through my Last.fm recommendations. After hearing "Someone Elses Knife" I immediately went out and grabbed their last full-length Ghosts which will be having it's 2 year anniversary this March. Just like Minnesota natives Now, Now , One For The Team exude a sweet poppy charm that's immediately endearing and constantly gratifying. Though musically I'm more inclined to draw comparisons to other indie pop powerhouses like Freelance Whales , Ghosts is [...]
Our friend Ian Anderson is up to new things and we'd be remiss if we didn't discuss 'em. One For The Team is no longer, but he certainly hasn't stopped making peppy poppy music. Anderson's latest project is Dream Brother, and the first two released songs feature special guests Paul Sprangers (Free Energy frontman) and indie-veteran John Vanderslice. Catchy yet understated, Dream Brother shows plenty of promise and serves to ensure that Anderson's musical prowess won't be leaving our ears any time soon. Dream Brother - "Haunted Heart (feat. Paul Sprangers)" [MP3] [...]
Stream: Dream Brother - "Pretty Eyes (feat. John Vanderslice)" Dream Brother is the newest project from Minneapolis's resident everyman Ian Anderson (of Afternoon Records, One For The Team, the Minneapolis Fucking Rocks blog) and the project has just put out this week their initial 7" single/download for "Haunted Hearts" b/w "Pretty Eyes", tracks that feature collaborations with indie rock royalty John Vanderslice and Paul Sprangers of Free Energy. And go figure, we love the songs, especially the jangle of "Pretty Eyes". Godspeed!

If you've had a child in the past twenty years (or if you've been one in the last twenty), it's hard not to go by a bowl of fruit salad and proclaim it as yummy, yummy. Thanks to the Disney Channel, The Wiggles have left an indelible mark on children worldwide. It's hard to believe this Aussie act is 20 [...]

I picked up this track yesterday, after hearing about it from The Culture Of Me , because I was pleasantly familiar with the work of both One For The Team (our friend Ian from MFR 's band - check a previous post here ) and John Vanderslice. However, I was not expecting to be entirely blown away, which is exactly what happened. The hazy nature of the meandering keys and guitars mixed with the pristine guy-girl vocal harmonies. I want to talk to you so bad. One For The [...]
The indie/power pop group One For The Team had worked at the Tiny Telephone Studios for their most recent album, the ten-track, excellent Ghosts. Tiny Telephone, if you're unfamiliar, is helmed and owned by the one and only John Vanderslice,...

In trying to play catch up, here's a few I've missed over the past couple months: White Hinterland - Kairos (* * * 1/2) Given my lack of experience with White Hinterland's previous work, I can't really speak to the differences that Kairo s brings to the table, but most of what I read suggests this sophomore effort heads in a decidedly unique direction for the band. Fortunately, the album's intriguingly dark atmospheric sound feels like [...]
[ download ] On March 16th, Minneapolis foursome One for the Team released their third full-length, Ghosts , on Afternoon Records . A record brimming with an absorbing sense of magnetism, its songs are stoked by combustible guitar riffs and killer male/female vocal harmonies. For their latest effort, the band took a retro tack, recording much of the album live and all of it to analog tape. Whether you believe that lower fidelity lends the tracks a warmer feeling or not, one listen should make it clear that [...]

WordPress is telling me this is the 211th post in the Friday Mixtape category- officially a full 4 years worth of the Friday Mixtape. Technically, I've missed a week here or there, so volume 410 would have been the 4th full year. Anyway, just something I noticed while prepping today mix, which is below. Please enjoy, pollen-free! Tracklisting: Deluka - Cascade Math - Demander Johnny Bertram & The [...]

I really dislike doing The Graboid is such huge chunks like this, but rather than skipping weeks, this is how it'll have to be done until I get this back to being a weekly posting. That being said, there have been a ton of great releases over the past few weeks with one in particular from last week that I've been extremely excited about: the self-titled LP from Black Tambourine . It isn't exactly "new" material, but a complete compilation of their material from the early 90s (they only lasted two years). [...]
