Take this one to your after-hours club. Just in time for L.A.'s annual Francophile feeding frenzy — the OohLaLA Festival — the new duo Tomorrow's World has released its debut EP. We say new, but you might know the principals; Tomorrow's World is the collaboration between Jean-Benoit Dunckel of Air and London-based singer Lou Hayter (New Young Pony Club). Their electro-pop noir is both edgy and sleek, a duality captured well in director James D. Kelly's video for the single "So Long My Love." ||| Live: Tomorrow's World plays [...]
We had a chance to check out the third night of the OohLaL.A. Festival and it was the best. Never seen a crowd quite like the one that night at the El Rey Theater. It was pretty diverse, with so many people conversing in French, even though we were at El Rey it felt like being at a show in Paris. The artists playing on the night we were there include DJ Cam, Feadz and Chateau Marmont. The performances were high-energy and most people were out on the dance floor enjoying the hype. It was a [...]

With her sultry flair that isn't far from the smooth sounds that make both Sade and Billie Holiday so appealing, songstress Hindi Zahra has been gaining fans among critics — acquiring the Prix Constantin (France's Mercury Prize) in 2010 — and listeners of folk, jazz and soul since her self-titled EP in 2009. Zahra now makes her American debut with her album, "Handmade," a collection of songs appropriately titled considering her organic songwriting. However, it wasn't always that way. The Franco-Morrocan singer-songwriter first started out providing backing vocals on hip-hop tunes, but it didn't take her long to [...]

The French act Revolver may be named for a well known Beatles album, but their jaunty download, "Get Around Town," is reminiscent of a Merry Go Round song, back when Emitt Rhodes was still wet behind the ears, circa "Scarborough Fair". The monsieurs were produced by the same guys behind our beloved Phoenix . Their album "Music For A While" is out Aug. 24. Revolver is on its way to L.A. to worm their way into our hearts this fall for the OohLaLA Festival . [...]
Some weeks we’ll be lucky if three stories regarding festivals trickle through our newsroom. Other weeks the planets align in such a way as to generate so many festival stories that our site is practically bursting at its virtual seams. Well, this week every planet and its mother must have queued up because we covered a handful of festival stories each and every day of the past week. The news they delivered ranged from the heartbreaking to the hilarious, in a hodgepodge week that included tragic deaths, party announcements, and a convention center full of nerds. [...]

Here's something awesome: Canadian pianist Gonzales has announced plans to reissue Solo Piano to the United States. Originally released in 2004 by Canadian super label Arts & Crafts and arriving just a year after his latest solo endeavor, Soft Powe r, the effort brings back his contemporary piano for another listen, complete with the piano backed eclectic pieces that at times almost sound reminiscent of The Bee Gees.
