The Perfect Fit: Which Summer Music Festival Is For You?

The Perfect Fit: Which Summer Music Festival Is For You? It happens every summer: Lineup after lineup entices you to join their party, visit some distant city or town, and brave the heat and crowds in the name of music. Whether it's trekking outside of Seattle, navigating traffic in Tennessee, squeezing onto the BART in San Francisco, or copping rides in Los Angeles - you'll do whatever's necessary to make that experience a reality. Don't you want to make it count, though? Sometimes a festival isn't for everyone. Maybe you're not into mud. There's a chance that agoraphobia of yours might act up at The Gorge. Who [...]

Outside Lands Diary, Sunday, August 12th, 2012: Jack in the Woods

My baby was stolen. Like the Lindbergh baby in the night* my beautiful 15 year old silver Honda CRV was removed from her place on the streets by some unnamed hooligan. We had many memories, me and that car. I learned to drive with her, I took up her up and down the coast of [...]

Show Review: San Francisco’s 2012 Outside Lands Festival, Day 3

San Francisco's annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is always tasked with the enormous duty of being the "other" huge festival of California, and the designation is both a blessing and a curse. On the low end, it has to try and come up with acts that Coachella somehow didn't have the foresight to [...]

Show Review: San Francisco’s 2012 Outside Lands Festival, Day 2

Additional contributions to this article by Dakin Hardwick. All photos by Jonathan Pirro except where noted. Saturday dawns with nary a clue that the fog and mist are clearing, and the massive greenery of Golden Gate Park continues to beckon to those who would walk onto its already-heavily-trodden surface, tickets in hand and heads held [...]

Outside Lands Festival 2012 – Looking Back: Metallica, Sigur Ros, Dr. Dog, Alabama Shakes, The Kills, Norah Jones, Grandaddy

The 5th annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival of 2012 will likely be remembered for two main things: the amazing line-up of artists and bands, and the entrenched, thick fog accompanied by relentless chilly winds. Yet, in the end, the music won over Nature, hands down. The festival's closing show Sunday night by [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Show Review: San Francisco’s 2012 Outside Lands Festival, Day 1

Additional contributions to this article by Dakin Hardwick. All photos by Jonathan Pirro except where noted. Summer is always slow and somewhat sporadic to come to the Bay Area, and with it comes a mostly dry spell of live music, with many large groups heading overseas for massive festivals and international tours, while California and [...]

[Watch] Jack White Perform "Hotel Yorba" & "Love Interruption" in the woods @ Outside Lands

Jack White Surprise Set - "Hotel Yorba" - Outside Lands 2012 (Official Video)
Last weekend, Outside Lands took place in San Francisco. During the madness of the festival, Jack White found some extra time to do an impromptu in the woods! Included in the set though with his all female band were renditions of "Hotel Yorba" and "Love Interruption". The latter is after the jump while the White Stripes classic is up at the top.

Review of Day Two at Outside Lands Festival 2012

The previous day’s excitement hadn’t worn off, as I arrived early for day two of Outside Lands. Starting off with Tame Impala, led by Kevin Parker’s fuzzed out guitar and woozy vocals, the group sounds similar to the Beatles later work. Like an acid trip, sonically wavering from steady melodic revving, before lifting into euphoric guitar distortions, their set was captivating, mind-altering and awesome. Even the weather seemed to agree as the fog thinned in spots, creating angelic glimmers of the sun. When their set finished, and yes, I stayed until the very end, I made my way [...]

Festival Review: CoS at Outside Lands 2012

Jack White Surprise Set - "Love Interruption" - Outside Lands 2012 (Official Video)
In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]
