Music videos are seldomly as ambitious as Errors' Pleasure Palaces . Errors really have something here and I know it's ridiculously early to predict my picks for best video of the year, but it's pretty hard to imagine that there will be anyone who can surpass this. Have Some Faith In Magic will be released on the 31st of this month and if Pleasure Palaces and its video are any indicator, looks to be quite good. Well, let's just let it speak for itself... [...]
You know the score by now. Each month Insound release a free monthly digital mix which is around for a week or so and which you can get for the price of an e-mail address or sometimes a Facebook like. Either way it is worth it because they are unfailingly good and there are always one or two new gems to discover along with some of the bigger names. This time it features Nada Surf , Xray Eyeballs , two tracks from Liam the Younger , Golden Calves , Of Montreal [...]

It was actually my last show of 2011, but true to form, I'm just getting around to talking about it here. Our BFFs Fake Problems and all around legend Mike Kinsella played a fantastic show at The Orpheum on December 30, 2011. They were ably supported by John Allen, who has a surprisingly great voice for acoustic folky goodness (I'm used to seeing him rock the bass in instrumental post-rock powerhouse Set and Setting ). It was exactly the way that I like to end the year, hanging with friends at a really great [...]
2011 - irgendwie ein komisches Jahr. Zumindest musikalisch gesehen.

50 The year-end albums list is the greatest challenge any music publication faces. It is not only an effort to encapsulate an entire year's worth of music: it is an effort to convey the entire musical philosophy of a site in one rather gimmicky column. Of course, it is also a lot of fun. It allows the opportunity to go through our favorite music all over again; it provides for spirited debate between editors and staffers; and it is ultimately a lesson in compromise and inclusion. Which is, of course, precisely the philosophy of [...]
I might have been insane to go to a show the day before a final, but honestly, I don't regret it one bit. Girls played an incredible show at the Music Box this past Tuesday, December 6th and I left the show happier than I was this entire finals week. We had a bit of trouble [...]

[Video stills courtesy of Ian Perlman and Oresti Tsonopoulos ] Mike Kinsella has been involved in many a highly-regarded project over the years - in particular, the Illinois native still does time in Joan of Arc with his brother Tim (our recent recording of them [ HERE ]), and before that, he and Tim were in Cap'n Jazz (our recent recording of them [ HERE ]). The man's discography is longer than many artists twice his age - and most of it is quite good. The latest Kinsella project to receive positive [...]

Owen was featured on this site back in August with the lead single from solo artist Mike Kinsella's new album, Ghost Town . The album was released on November 8, so it's time to revisit the album. Ghost Town has several standout tracks to choose from, but I think O, Evelyn... is a good representation of the album as a whole. Some who listen to this song may think this song is too low-key or perhaps slow, however I think that's a lazy opinion. There is a lot of depth [...]

Chicago-based Mike Kinsella has a long history in the indie-music scene, once leading the band American Football and having played alongside his brother Tim Kinsella in other groups such as Joan of Arc, Owls, and Cap'n Jazz. His most recent solo project with Polyvinyl Records, however, has been one of his most impressive musical accomplishments yet. Simply referring to himself as " Owen ," Kinsella's soft melodies combine a variety of instruments that complement his voice to perfection. With more than 10 full length albums and [...]

Owen, the solo project of Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football), released his sixth studio album last week. Known for its soft melodies, complex acoustics, and combining lead acoustics with keys and electric guitar, his new album "Ghost Town," isn't far behind. The opening track "Too Many Moons," slow and fingerpicked with subtle instruments coming and going. Tracks like the "Armoire" combines both acoustic finger picking to an electric guitar solo towards the middle. "No Language" is one of the albums more upbeat and poppy songs, but has an excellent use of the [...]

Errors have teased us with some great tracks from their new record and now they're doing it again with Earthscore . The difference is, this time they have a release date and an official title. Have Some Faith In Magic will be released on January 24th and it should be pretty spectacular. Earthscore I mentioned The Ice Choir before and that they'd put something out sooner or later... well, it appears that time is quickly approaching. [...]

For 10 years now, Mike Kinsella has been doing the rounds as Owen , every grown-up emo kid's favourite acoustic troubadour. His releases since that time have softly plumbed the depths of post-teenage heartbreak, regarding interpersonal relationships with a self-deprecating and wry eye, and set their conclusions to some unabashedly lovely music, dextrous open-tuned acoustics, distant overdriven caterwaul, and a host of backing instruments which sound far more lonely than their many layers would have you believe. So it seems fair to suggest that Ghost Town , Kinsella's sixth full-length release as [...]
Deerhunter's prolific musical genius, Bradford Cox, has been one of our favorite 'indie' musicians for years. In addition to his work on his mothership, that is Deerhunter, Cox has lots of other music projects and collaborations, including the most popular of them all - his solo work under the moniker Atlas Sound, a project that [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Owen - Ghost Town MMMM From his work with Cap'n Jazz to American Football, Mike Kinsella has always displayed a knack for being able to translate emotional weight through dizzying guitar riffs just as well as any singer ever could. As Owen, Kinsella has proven to be a master at arranging and layering, creating something soothing and accessible that still manages to be relatively complex and deep without losing a sense of purpose. Owen's sixth full-length album, Ghost [...]

Owen Ghost Town Polyvinyl Records [2011] Fire Note Says: Owen returns with a little bit of rock that works well on his sixth album Ghost Town . Album Review: Mike Kinsella is probably still best known for his early work in critically lauded bands American Football, Joan Of Arc and Cap'n Jazz but many fans have stayed with him and followed the emo troubadour on his [...]
Owen's latest (and quite likely last) album continues in the same vein as previous efforts, which is still pretty good. Mike Kinsella, better known to you as Owen, has had quite the fruitful music career. A one-man-band, Owen has a style reminiscent of a rowdy Iron & Wine, which is still quite maudlin and mellow. Written on the eve of the birth of his daughter, and thus forcing Kinsella to reflect on the tumultuous relationship he had with his own father, Ghost Town is slightly more elevated in atmosphere and instrumentation than earlier efforts, but...
Florian Rainer Chicago's musical wizard Mike Kinsella is back with a new full-length record, continuing his solo endeavors as Owen. Ghost Town, out today on Polyvinyl, is the singer-songwriter's sixth studio album. It expands on the new territory and expanded sound introduced in 2009's New Leaves. Owen looks to an upbeat and pop-centric direction, and it definitely feels more polished this time

Not to sound too spooky or anything, but Halloween is currently in full swing and so are many of the bands I talk about here. I know, spooky right? But more than that, some are getting ready to tour, currently touring or about to release their best work for me to judge... don't worry, you can judge them too. And speaking of judging, Jesus Ween is also in full swing which is far creepier. But back to my original point, the bands I'm talking about specifically include Washed Out , STRFKR and Owen. Washed Out's new video [...]
