I can't believe it's already December! The last few months increasingly have felt as if they were picking up speed, I don't even feel like November happened. That's time i guess. I think you'll be happy with this weeks selection, I know I am and that usually translates well. . . Download: Jesse Payne - [...]

Being one of my all time favourite solo acts, having Owen Ashworth aka Casiotone For The Painfully Alone answer a few questions for CitR last year was undoubted proof of how far this website had come in only a few short months. However, it was also in said interview that Ashworth announced he would no longer be recording under the Casiotone moniker, and instead would be taking up the alias Advance Base . Musically, the new tracks are cleaner and [...]

So I was walking to work this morning listening to the Classic that is, Etiquette , by the now not functioning Casiotone For The Painfully Alone . That record will probably always make me sad, not least because it's so fucking heart wrenching, but also because I was under the impression that Owen Ashworth would never make music again. Rather wonderfully I came home later that day to find this whimsical, spiritually ecstatic tune in my inbox. It's short, delicate and tells the story of a childhood pony. A new direction, a [...]
Before seeing the band perform for the last time ever at Sneaky Pete's last week, I had the chance to sit down for a chat with Owen Ashworth from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. This is his last tour as Casiotone, but this is not for the purposes of retiring from music, more so that he can put to bed a project which has dominated the last thirteen years of his life and start work on new projects with relative freedom. It was interesting listening to him talk about it, because for all he repeated the reasons he's [...]

According to their (really, his) website , Chicago via San Francisco's Casiotone For The Painfully Alone are retiring. What does that mean? It means after thirteen years, "Mr. Casiotione" Owen Ashworth is leaving that moniker behind and going forth like a brand new man. Owen will still be writing and recording and touring and all of those things that musicians do. What he won't be doing is playing any of his old CFTPA tunes. Well, that is not after a pretty huge tour - The 1st Annual Final North American [...]

We could not be more excited to announce this show!!! Backseat has been around for over three years now and one of the best things about running the site has been meeting amazing people. Owen Ashworth is one of those people. He started using the moniker " Casiotone for the Painfully Alone " back in 1997 and five albums, countless EPs and 73s, and years of relentless touring later, he's decided to retire the moniker (and the songs) and move on to new things. Before he does though, he is heading out on one final tour [...]

This show happened back in July, but the mood of Owen's lyrics is much more appropriate for cold, snowy days like today... Each song tells a sad story–of a one night stand, a car crash, or of general malaise in Kansas. He seems to have a keen ability to parse experience down to its most skeletal form ("not how you imagined it...in a pantry with the pancake mix, you had your New Year's kiss"), and then to make those bones dance to catchy electronic beats. The very personal, faux-autobiographical nature of the songs makes for an intimate listening experience, or as one iTunes reviewer put it so succinctly, "Owen, I love you! You were the soundtrack of my high school depression!"
For today's Roll Call we call out Owen Ashworth of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone Vs. Children Tomlab Release Date: 04.07.09 I've heard my favorite record thus far of 2009. Casiotone For the Painfully Alone's Vs. Children is the most personal record I've heard this year. After the stellar compilation Advance Base Battery Life , I wasn't quite sure what to expect with Casiotone's new material. Would it be more of the same? Or was the backlog cleared out with the intention of throwing down something new? As it turns out, this record is pretty in line with [...]

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone is the ultimate listening experience when you're just having a shitty, shitty day. Owen Ashworth creates minimalistic songs about young adults having their hearts broken, getting used, and living dreary lives. We all have those days, and CFTPA exists to soundtrack them. This Springsteen cover appears on Advance Base Battery Life , the first of two CFTPA records coming out this year, a compilation of rarities and unrelased tracks. "Streets Of Philadelphia" is trademark CFTPA, with a heavy drone in the background, a simple drum beat, and Ashworth's vocals that sound like he [...]

Owen Ashworth, the man behind Casiotone for the Painfully Alone was tapped by photographer and video artist Laurel Nakadate to create the music for his debut film, Stay the Same Never Change . The result of Ashworth's reworking of previously created works is the film's soundtrack: The Town Topic EP. Opening and closing with the release's sole non-instrumental tracks, the heart of the Town Topic EP are thirteen instrumental tracks that include four ringtones Ashworth created specifically for the film's characters. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone currently has "Ice [...]

CFTPA is a solo project of Owen Ashworth. Apparently famous in the indie scene, he came across to me in some tag cloud around the web few months ago. Of course, I've played it because of the name of the band (it's something like buying a book because of its cover but that's my stuff). Anyway, he uses a Casio. And lots of more stuff, but the Casio is the main instrument. It's a little hard to believe that I have one of these at home and I couldn't EVER make any music. Only the dumb ones. And [...]
