On July 24th, Passion Pit will release Gossamer , the expansive new album that will serve as a follow-up to the band's 2009 full-length debut, Manners . Of the album, frontman Michael Angelakos explains, “on Gossamer there is more of a dichotomy between the lyrics and the music. You hear my lyrics more precisely, which is something I was ready for. The lyrics on this album have a lot to say about what the last two years of my life have been troubled with.” Continue reading: New Album: Passion Pit [...]

Never believe the hype unless you’re a sucker. Hype only exists for bands that are merely trendy and not necessarily talented. They are a band of the moment and nothing else. Luckily for us, one highly publicized band doesn’t fall into that category. They are the hottest band to emerge from New Zealand since Flight of the Conchords (Okay, they are a comedy duo, but music is a huge part of their act so cut me some slack, gosh). After releasing two EPs, This Machine and No Light, The Naked and Famous released their debut album Passive Me, Aggressive [...]
Cover songs are a very delicate genre. Sometimes they're a gateway to earning notoriety. (James Blake's take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" only bolstered his fame.) Other times, covers are a misfire that insult the original's splendor. (Dee Snider and Eddie Ojeda's attempt at The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" is cringe-worthy.) So, when an artist releases a collection of covers, one has the right to be wary. Luckily, Vermont band Chamberlin' s step-up to the covers plate is decent, but it falls short of instant covers canonical material. The [...]

When I close my eyes and listen to Baby Monster ’s recently released self-titled album, I dream that I’m delivering an actual monster-baby that spawned from Passion Pit, Miike Snow, and Animal Collective. Although Baby Monster may resemble these other artists with their looks, they seem to have quite different genetic make up which distinguishes them and cuts that umbilical cord. However, the unavoidable fact stands that if you don’t like the genre, Baby Monster will probably drop some date rape in your drink and your knees may weaken for them. What am I trying to say? [...]
The time has finally come for Oakland, funk destroyer, rap chopper, pop infested, crazy digital beat maker Wallpaper. The nonstop hard work has landed the artist, musician, producer, remixer, mash-up extraordinaire and performer in the hands of MTV's imprint Boardwalk and Hype Music labels. But prior to that, he has released a monster T-Rex EP [...]

Here's some background on Ruby Coast: they're 5 dudes from Ontario Canada, they've toured with Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club and Ra Ra Riot, their new album was produced by Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire) and Brian Paulson (Wilco, Beck), and they can sneak "No Way Jose" into a song better than most. So now that we have the obligatory introductions out of the way let's talk about their new album Whatever This Is . A relatively short album with most songs clocking in around 3 minutes long these guys have obviously figured out that being [...]
The art of album arrangement is a dying one, but not due to laziness. Well, not on the musician's part, at least. People crave a 99 cent single; they don't necessarily care about an artist's entire catalog, let alone the rest of their album. However, Geographer's EP, Animal Shapes, begins as you would expect an album to - and that's refreshing! "Original Sin" eases you into the hot bathtub that

It Gets Your Body Movin' - Suckers It Gets Your Body Movin' - Suckers ( Buy ) Usually, an album review doesn’t start out with the overall opinion thrust right into the beginning, because then that leaves very little inscentive for the reader to keep their interest in the remainder. However, all proper protocol is being thrown out the window here. Wild Smile, is a really good debut album from Brooklyn-based Suckers . During the course of the 11-track, 48+ minute compilation, one’s opinion of the music playing at any given moment can sway more [...]

Right up there with the disappointing Phoenix 123 is the Passion Pit "Little Things" 73. Once again it's on colored vinyl which makes it a little more fun and collectible, but the music on this thing sounds like it was transferred right from an mp3 to vinyl. Not good. I still love "Little Things" as a song, but I'll probably opt to spin it off my vinyl copy of Manners rather than this bad boy. And the Felix Da Housecat remix is only really needed in mp3 format which you can grab [...]

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars Let's face it, Zach Rogue hasn't had it easy. He was forced into rock n' roll because of the dot-com bust, and his band lost a former member/friend in a fire, not to mention his own health issues. Through it all, Zach has tried to put a light on his life with Rogue Wave . Now comes the release of their fourth album, Permalight. "Solitary Gun" begins the album on the right foot. It [...]
In a few days a new decade will begin and we'll have a whole new debate about what to call the decade, but first we must reflect on the final year of the zeroes/naughties. It seems like I talk every year about how surprised I am by the amount of new artists that show up on my end of the year list, but they've really outdone themselves this year with 2/5 of the albums represented on this list being debuts. It was also a year of being blown away by bands that I was never been able to fully invest [...]
As the first year for Too Much Happiness comes to a close, I look back and think that it was a pretty good year for music. I wouldn't say it was anything EPIC. Certainly some influential albums here and there, but no real game changers. This is MY personal list of my top 20 favorite albums of 2009. Mine and mine alone. I'm sure Paul and Adam would take exception to many of these (Metric over Phoenix? Paramore over Miike Snow?! Animal Collective is HOW FAR DOWN?!?!), and I'm not even saying these are what I believe [...]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars It's funny that Cale Parks spent the majority of this summer touring with Passion Pit , as the member of Aloha seems in an entirely different league altogether on his latest, the Swift Mars EP , which is out now on Polyvinyl Records. As a musician, he most well known as a drummer, but his usage of electronics and layering on this EP tells a story of a [...]

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars When news that Rostam from Vampire Weekend and Wes from Ra Ra Riot would unite to create an album under the name of Discovery , the Internet was afire with fans of both bands, all hoping that they could combine the magic of their individual outfits into something that would supersede both. LP is the title of said album, and while there are definitely [...]

In the fall of 2007 Brooklyn-natives were privy to the exciting new synth-filled sounds of the duo now known as MGMT. The Management, as they were then known, were so unabashedly open about their hipsterness that they quickly began to fill the void that the Steve Aokis and Ed Bangers were losing ability to (because of their newly found mass appeal). MGMT found its way into obscurest playlists, 2007 year-end lists, every festival on the face of the planet and lemon-flavored-soda commercials, all within months. By the time their debut album Oracular Spectacular actually came out in 2008, it [...]
Call me a cock-eyed pessimist, but I find the seminal story behind this band a little hard to swallow. Could it actually be true? An EP put together as a VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT from the band's frontman to his girlfriend at Emerson got around well enough to make him an instant hit? Or is it possible, just possible, that this is a groomed story to draw even more attention to the band? Perhaps the EP was ALSO given to the GF while having not been INTENDED for the gf. A fine line, I feel, and one easily blurred by the [...]
Love does strange things to men, especially when heartbreak is inevitably around the corner. Vincent Van Gogh’s winning plan to get his girl back was to cut off his ear, while others have chosen a subtler route, like an apology followed by years of guilt. When Passion Pit ’s crooner Michael Angelakos was in college, he chose to break out a few instruments and make an emotional, yet catchy as hell mix tape that put his heart on his sleeve, and his pipes on display. One liners like “have you seen me cry, tears like diamonds” littered [...]

I don't think I really hyped this album as much as a lot of the popular press, so perhaps I don't have to feel quite as guilty about the subsequent letdown. I did like their preceding EP Chunk of Change though - in fact I liked it an awful lot - but to re-read that review is to perhaps understand why I find this album so disappointing. Here are some quotes: "It’s just on the fringes of being way too electronic and frantic for me, and that atonal female wail seems like [...]

I took a couple weeks off from dishing on the new releases due both to being ridiculously busy and not being inspired by enough I was hearing. I'm still busy, but it's hard to ignore this week (and the next,) with the latest from Jarvis Cocker , Grandaddy's Jason Lytle and White Rabbits . Meanwhile, Phoenix's wonderful Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix has been digitally available for a few weeks already in Rhapsody (and a week in iTunes) and there's other new releases from John Vanderslice, Passion Pit, Au Revoir [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: Passion Pit - Manners words: Matt McDonald Press the play button, and marvel as ELO, The Bee Gees and all of your other shameless pop wet dreams rear their beards at the same time, miraculously sounding both credible and cool. There’s handclaps, children’s choirs and exclusively falsetto vocals. It isn’t the Scissor Sisters. It’s Passion Pit’s debut album and it’s the best oxymoron ever. Listening to ‘Manners’ is like swaying through a world of a million discos in a dream-like state. From the slow-burning ‘Swimming In [...]
