Before there was indie music, there was underground music, which was essentially the same thing as what we now call indie, except, as the name implies, no one knew about it. In the '70s and '80s, there were reasons for why music was relegated to pop-up venues and warehouses and basements. Music of the underground could be abrasive or it could be druggy, but regardless of the particulars, it didn’t mix with the mainstream because it deliberately did not appeal to the traditional societal standards.

Thanks To Camilo for this great artwork. Looking back at 2012, there were plenty of albums that I loved. Was it the best year of music in recent memory? Maybe not, but it was a damn good year in its own right. There is a lot that we may look back on and remember well into the rest of the decade. This year I listed my Top 40 albums, as well as a few honorable mentions that were as close to making my list as they come. I didn't get to listen [...]
It's the end of the year. 2012...and we survived. Unless some mad Mayan rises from the grave in the next three days and turns us all into zombies and the inevitable Irwin Allen disaster picture. Anything's possible. So here are my top pics for favorite albums of 2012. It's really a toss-up between Jack and Corin. I went with Corin in the final coin flip because I find myself going back
As I looked over my playlists from the year 2012, I have tried to only add the songs that either charge me up or songs that seem to find a way to my heart and soul. Here are my favorites for 2012. I couldn’t possibly rank them, so they are simply listed in the order that they were released. Editor's Note: The majority of the songs are in a playlist at the bottom of the post page. Cloud Nothings - "Stay Useless" This song reminds me of that awkward wonky [...]
It's that time at last! Triple J Hottest 100 voting has opened. For those that don't let their musical intelligence be insulted by Triple J, this year promises to be another hard slog at getting those 10 tracks perfectly right, so that you can just tick them off as they come up one by one on the 26th January. Well... at least that's what it used to be like. It's been only 10 years ago now, that Queens of the Stone Age held the number 1 spot with their mental track "No One Knows", and only five years [...]

"19043 - The Tallest Man on Earth "19573 - Milo Greene "Alone" - Trampled By Turtles Trampled by Turtles’ last album featured a rowdy top hit with “Wait So Long”. This time around, they open the album with a few slower tunes that rank as some of their best yet. Trampled manages to take a page out of Mumford’s play book this time around and they hit it out of the park . [...]
About two weeks ago MTIB started whittling down a list of over 5,678 abums (5,679 albums to be exact) to bring you a list of our favorite albums of the year. This year we decided we shouldn't stop at just ten, but share all of the albums that were in the running as well. So, here you have it. The 50 finest albums of 2012, in our humble opinions. Although, we may not use as many big words as Pitchfork and we may not always be as 'hip', we do understand those words and we did [...]

![[memories] Outside Lands 2012](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4457945_lg.jpg)
It's been three plus days since Outside Lands came to an end and i've needed every minute of it to fully recover. This was my first legitimate music festival and it was a lot to take in. With that said, I would do it all over again this weekend if I could. I had so much fun last weekend, not even the total lack of sleep, the nightly struggles of finding my way home, the $9 beers, or the bird that shat in my eye Friday night will keep me [...]

Photo Credit: Andrew St. Clair 21 years after its inception, Lollapalooza is a festival that does almost everything right. For quite a while now, it's been in a very convenient area and had excellent line-ups, even compared with competing fests such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Outside Lands. When done right, a great festival includes bands for everyone, and Lollapalooza does this to near perfection. Among the headliners: Jack White and Red Hot Chili Peppers , Justice , Kaskade , Bassnecter and Santigold (for the dance crowd), Black Sabbath (for the [...]

In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]

Check out my photos of Outside Lands over at Stereogum .
Stereogum Over the weekend, thousands of fans flocked to this year's Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park. Overcast and chilly weather was offset by the fire from the Metallica pyrotechnics and warm vibes from festival attendees. Neil Young & Crazy Horse turned up their guitars to close out Friday, Metallica blew everyone away with their hellfire on Saturday, and Stevie Wonder dazzled with his barrage of hits to on Sunday. Some of the other highlights included Jack White's impromptu set in the midst of the trees, [...]
