Before Grammy nominations and blockbuster soundtracks, M83 proved to the world that shoegaze and electronica could thrive in the same space. The then-duo feasted on a history of computer music, striving to create life with airless tools. By aspiring to post-rock heights with dusty samples and laymen's synths, Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau broke a longstanding mold of restrained, austere electronic music. Under their hands, synths could swell and scream like forces of nature. Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts started M83 on the track to global recognition, and still stands as one of [...]

2012 in music according to 91X: loud groups in space // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Last Friday, San Diego’s 91X hosted its annual Wrex the Halls, a monster concert designed to kick off the holidays. The billing typically comprises of a handful of bands that range in popularity, from the up-and-comers to those that sell out arena shows on the regular; this year’s event was no different. The sold-out show at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena featured (in order of appearance) Audio Addiction, Youngblood Hawke, Imagine Dragons, The Joy Formidable, Tegan & Sara, Passion Pit, M83, and The Killers. Five and a half hours of live music never sounded so good. [...]

Suicide Sundaes - Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen, Sunday is back. Greg is here to bring you the week's dirty servings, and some old favorites through a throwdown-throwback to simpler times. A time when bangers were big, remixes were bigger, the bassline bled, and we didn't care about anything as long as came in kicking and left screaming. Hope everyone is keeping warm during these winter months, if not here's a rather large list of some cool tracks and heavy hitters to help get that blood pumping. In an attempt to make up [...]

Photo Credit: Andrew St. Clair 21 years after its inception, Lollapalooza is a festival that does most things right. For quite a while, it's been in a very convenient area and has an excellent line-up, even compared with competing fests such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Outside Lands. When done right, a great festival includes bands for everyone, and Lollapalooza does this to near perfection. Among the headliners: Jack White and Red Hot Chili Peppers , Justice , Kaskade , Bassnecter and Santigold [...]

With more than 100 bands on eight stages (well, seven if you discount the Kidz stage, which often features songs about barnyard animals), Lollapalooza is expected to be exhausting and overwhelming. The point is to see as many bands as possible, because you paid for a ticket and dammit you're going to make that 3-day wristband worth it. At least, that was my Year 1 strategy. Year 2 was a little more laid back; I even took a night off, missing a few bands I would have liked to see in the name of sleep and sunburn recovery. [...]

Wow what an interesting opening day. Fans packed in early despite the scorching hot temperatures (somewhere around a 105 degree heat index out on the Grant Park baseball diamonds), but if you were expecting weather to prevent thousands of people from enjoying this great lineup, you would be dead wrong -- more than once this weekend. Started it off right by getting in to the grounds quickly and heading straight to see Yellow Ostrich (for the second day in a row). Gotta show some love for the fellow Wisconsinites whenever possible. It doesn't hurt that [...]

For the eighth time in a row, Lollapalooza returned to Chicago's Grant Park. While the festival has received its share of rain over the years (e.g. Billy Idol's mesmerizing sun shower set in 2005, The Gaslight Anthem's downpour debut in 2009, Best Coast's muddy power hour in 2011, to name a few), the grounds have never had to shut down . Yet with recent catastrophes at festivals worldwide, management took no chances and they made the right choice. Only three hours were ultimately lost and in those three hours something wild happened - there was a sense [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Steve Mitchell, Invision/AP The usual hustle and bustle surrounding Chicago's historic Grant Park in early August manifested itself once again, as it does perennially. The eighth Lollapalooza festival based in Chicago and the 21st overall shut down roads and brought tens of thousands of weekend revelers armed with an insatiable appetite for live music. Sunlight poured through the trees at the Google Play stage, where rising U.K. outfit [...]
