Additional contributions to this article by Dakin Hardwick. All photos by Jonathan Pirro except where noted. Saturday dawns with nary a clue that the fog and mist are clearing, and the massive greenery of Golden Gate Park continues to beckon to those who would walk onto its already-heavily-trodden surface, tickets in hand and heads held [...]
Who would've ever thought we'd see Geographer, Norah Jones, and Metallica share stage space at a festival. But we did, and the experience was truly unique.
In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]
Stereogum Over the weekend, thousands of fans flocked to this year's Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park. Overcast and chilly weather was offset by the fire from the Metallica pyrotechnics and warm vibes from festival attendees. Neil Young & Crazy Horse turned up their guitars to close out Friday, Metallica blew everyone away with their hellfire on Saturday, and Stevie Wonder dazzled with his barrage of hits to on Sunday. Some of the other highlights included Jack White's impromptu set in the midst of the trees, [...]

Another day, another 40,000 fans and two dozen bands. Unlike Friday's EDM, rock and singer-songwriter heavy lineup, today focused more on more pop and indie rock (with the exception of Metallica , of course, who are as hard rock as any band at the festival). Early on, I bounced around from stage to stage catching a few indie buzz-bands. Animal Kingdom , the British three-piece known for their track "Strange Attractor" played a short but fun set with lots of interaction with the fans between songs. San Francisco's own Geographer put on [...]

Living in Oakland for several years has taught me (at the very least) two things: what hipsters like and what hipsters hate. Fusion tea bars, high-waisted shorts, and “this great band that you probably haven’t heard of yet” have continued to be very popular this year, while one usual favorite’s name has become a target of blasé looks and exasperated eye-rolls. This name: Outside Lands. Since August of 2008, Outside Lands has been the premiere San Francisco music festival (rivaled [...]

It’s been a while since Pelski lay waste to the blog world (or blogosphere, if you must) with one of his illustrious pelski playlists – and, incidentally, a while since he’s nauseatingly referred to himself in the third person. This playlist is a bit of a mixed bag: old and new; some pleasant vocal soothers, big-kick house boomers, inventive remixes, Chirpy Baltimore re-edits, the obligatory electro bangers and wonky fidget... and even a touch of tech-house. Jesse Rose’s taken a while to knock up his long-awaited album, but it’s by [...]
