Illustration by Johnnie Cluney Philadelphia's own Pattern Is Movement recently recorded a new Daytrotter session, which is now available . From the Daytrotter site: "The two new jams that they performed for this session - 'Light of the World' and 'Make It Right' - could be mantras that school children could recite to themselves each morning. They are simple lessons, or thoughts, that could make one a better person, or just glow a little bit more. Here we could be enriching ourselves and getting a little nasty at the [...]

There are some bands out there today that defy the odds of the ever-so daunting genre label. That label is the main thing that can box a band in and define them so early on that they have to work even harder to break through that barrier. And even if/when they do break through said barrier, their fans are so set on their past genre-defined music that it's quite a big gamble to take the chance of branching out into previously uncharted territory and possibly loosing a chunk of their fan base. Whew! But then there are those [...]

The Key: Pattern Is Movement has been in a pretty serious hibernation since September 2010, just over a year. What led to that decision? Chris Ward: Well, we had never taken time off. The band had been full-time since, like, 2005. We were either on the road playing shows or conceiving something—conceiving a tour, conceiving a record—since 2005. It was like that for five years. We realized that we had never stayed at home and made a record. We've always gone somewhere. We've either gone to San Francisco, or [...]
Over at the Kung Fu Necktie website, the listing for October 30th states that Tera Melos will be performing with Hermit Thrushes, Banned Books, and a "SPECIAL GUEST BAND." Well, Pattern Is Movement drummer Chris Ward—who is also the Venue Manager at Johnny Brenda 's (which recently celebrated its five-year anniversary )—just dropped us a line to let us know that the special guest band is, in fact, Pattern Is Movement. The local duo has been keeping a low profile lately while working on its new album (which, according to Chris, is almost finished). [...]
It's going to be impossible to claim that Beyoncé Knowles has "quietly" put together a vicious song catalog, stocked with everything from heart-wrenching ballads to shamelessly fun bangers , but she has done it without some of the fanfare associated with other pop stars. And, you know, the musical work is stellar; it makes a ton of sense that others have dove into reinterpreting her songs. Jumping off with yesterday's cover by The Horrors , here's the ten best indie rock covers of Beyoncé's sterling, still-growing catalog. Read More...
Here's Strand of Oaks' Timothy Showalter with Chris Ward of Pattern is Movement playing " Sterling " in the back of a Philadelphia cab. The banjo plucks are a far cry from the layered album version and Showalter's solo performances with a giant array of guitar pedals. The song still holds up. "Sterling" is on Pope Killdragon , my favorite album released last year.

The Forms have a new EP called Derealization . As we previously reported , the EP features remixes made with some of the bands' friends, including: Matt Berninger of The National , Craig Wedren of Shudder To Think , Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors , Daniel Hart of St. Vincent 's band, and Andrew Thiboldeaux of Pattern is Movement . Threespheres and Ernest Jenning will be releasing the EP on February 15th along with a repressing of [...]

Just shy of a full two hours, this podcast is a new record length for me. I hope it helps you travel, wrap or merry. The Forms , a New York-based indie rock duo, started the day off of my proverbial radar. But after announcing an EP featuring vocals by Matt B erninger ( The National ), Andrew Thiboldeaux ( Pattern Is Movement ), and C raig Wedren ( Shudder To Think ), they have created a sizable blip. Since forming in 2003, Alex Tween (vox, keyboards) and Matt Walsh [...]

Vocalist/keyboardist Alex Tween and multi-instrumentalist Matt Walsh a/k/a The Forms have a new EP called Derealization . The project was spawned after the duo spent an afternoon listening to the vinyl of their self-titled album at different speeds. The decision was made on the spot to do a "remix" album. Once they started working on it, Tween and Walsh teamed up with a bunch of their friends to completely reconceptualized a number of their older songs from the bottom up. Derealization was recorded at Walsh's studio in Ridgewood with the help of [...]
Pattern Is Movement - Time A sensational Bowie cover! New Yorkers can catch Pattern Is Movement later this month on a boat. MP3: Pattern Is Movement - Time
I recently had the privilege of interviewing Chris Ward (pictured left), the drummer of Pattern Is Movement. The talented Philadelphia duo is currently taking a much-needed break from three years of nearly constant touring and they are spending their summer in their home town recording their next album, hopefully coming out early next year. This time, they're doing it a little bit differently -

If you want to follow GIMME Tumblr , here is the rss feed (or you could just join Tumblr ). Listen. Downloadables: I Was Denied (mp3) by Thee Oh Sees (note: love it) [...]
