hey, howdy, hi! ive been obsessing over the truckers for the past week or so, which is not a bad problem to have and it does happen quite often. when southern rock opera came out in 91 i was living in chicago, and while i loved the record i dont think i necessarily think i got the "southern" thing. granted i had been to the south, but not really experienced the south outside of touristy type places. it wasnt until i moved down here that i really started to get whatever "it" is. the songs definitely resonate more personally now [...]
In honor of A.J. McCarron's super-fine girlfriend Alabama's thrashing of Notre Dame, here is Alabama's finest doing Where The Devil Don't Stay And if you were like every other person in America, that didn't go to Notre Dame or has a copy of Rudy on Betamax, and laid the points last night; well then you got some extra coin in your pocket. What better way to spend it than on some good ol' Alabama boys. Cooley, Patterson and Isbell all have fantastic solo albums out now. Go buy them. Cooley [...]

The third solo album from Patterson Hood , front man and main songwriter of the Drive-By Truckers, finds him constructing a largely first person, autobiographical narrative. The impressionistic story harks back to 20 years ago, when Hood was 27, a troubled period in his life when his first marriage broke up, his first band broke up, and he fell out with his family. These events are occasionally refracted through today’s perspective and songs on the album began in the form of a novel Hood was working on to pass time on the road. While the book remains unfinished, the [...]

A Patterson Hood B-side is better than most songwriter's best A-sides. Hood's solo output, apart from the Truckers, has been spotted with sparse (often much darker) material, and taken as a whole (3 albums worth) amounts to a solid body of work. While never quite as satisfying as a full blooded Patterson effort such as "Used to be a Cop" the writing on these albums is concise, clear, strong and deeply personal. Hood's newest album Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance comes out Sept 11 on ATO, backed by The Downtown Rumblers: [...]

Southern Shelter There's not really a lot to covering Bruce Springsteen . Whether you're fronting a big band or are just a guy with a guitar - and maybe a harmonica - all you really need is the ability and conviction to sing it the way Bruce intended it; the song really does the rest. Given that criteria, Patterson Hood has got it - if you'll excuse the pun - covered. The Drive-By Truckers frontman opened up for Sonic Youth at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia in December 2007 [...]

Patterson Hood sure likes to keep busy. After releasing albums in back to back years with his full time band the Drive-By Truckers , the front man for the hard touring Southern rock act will release his third solo record Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance on September 11 via ATO Records. Hood, who showcased material from his upcoming album earlier this summer with a handful of dates, will head out with his backing band the Downtown Rumblers for a full-on North American tour this fall. Starting off with an [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Patterson Hood must be holding back his best material. Or, at least, the solo material on display at this appearance at The Bell House wowed me both Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and me to a greater level than his most recent work with his main gig, the Drive-By Truckers , has. That's not meant as a knock on the Truckers - that band is a collaborative effort, and Hood has never been the whole equation as far as songwriting for it goes. But he has always been, [...]

As the longtime frontman of the Alabama by way of Athens rock outfit Drive By Truckers, the name Patterson Hood generally conjures imagery of cranked up Gibson SG's and whiskey soaked rock shows but the truth of the matter is there is a lot more to the man than that. While his day job for the last 15 years (damn, has it really been fifteen years) has been leading one of America's hardest working rock groups on what could best be described as a brutal tour schedule, Patterson has regularly released solo albums showcasing his softer side. His [...]

Pattersoon Hood of Drive-By Truckers is releasing his third solo album on September 11th. The album started out as a semi-fictional book Hood was writing during a turbulent period of his live in his late twenties. Over time, the book turned itself into introspective songs, as Hood describes: The songs begin in the period that the book was set in, but don't end there, as they really just were the impetus for writing about the life I am living now and contrasting it with the troubled times of two decades ago. It is in some ways [...]
Patterson Hood, the guitarist, bass player, and front-man of Drive-By Truckers, played a solo set at XPoNential's River Stage this afternoon with his band, the Downtown Rumblers. The alt-country musician brought a taste of the south to Camden with his southern drawl and warm acoustic songs. The singer was chatty with the crowd as he ... Continue reading
