Een schoenmaker hoeft wat mij betreft niet bij zijn leest te blijven. Patterson Hood, een van de voormannen van The Drive-By Truckers, had het idee opgevat iets anders te gaan doen als zijn band een pauze in gaat lassen: hij...
The third solo album from Patterson Hood , front man and main songwriter of the Drive-By Truckers, finds him constructing a largely first person, autobiographical narrative. The impressionistic story harks back to 20 years ago, when Hood was 27, a troubled period in his life when his first marriage broke up, his first band broke up, and he fell out with his family. These events are occasionally refracted through today’s perspective and songs on the album began in the form of a novel Hood was working on to pass time on the road. While the book remains unfinished, the [...]

How about a live version of Patterson Hood's new solo album Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance, along with some commentary and insight into the songs from the man himself - with the exception of track 7 the recordings have being culled and condensed from this recording all credit and thanks to original tapers and uploaders. Patterson Hood Heat Lightning Rumbles In The Distance Play It Again Sam/ATO Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Patterson Hood takes us on a dark journey and brings us through the other side and back into the light! Album Review: Patterson Hood is one of the best songwriters of the past 20 years, with his band Drive-By Truckers, he has penned a multitude of classics on such albums [...]
The Drive-By Trucker frontman's third solo album is his best sustained work in years, an immensely satisfying release woven together from relationships past and present, wrecked and whole. The most frontward of frontpersons for the Drive-By Truckers, Patterson Hood is also the one most easily taken for granted. The gracious, heart-sleeved ringmaster of the band's live performances, Hood trades in sincerity and emotional showmanship while his bandmates cultivate hipper niche fanbases. Longtime partner Mike Cooley gets to be the rogue, racking up points over on the right side of the stage (dubbed "Cooleyville" by fans) with devil-may-care attitude and [...]
Not anther Southern rock album. ATO Records, 2012 7.6 / 10.0 If not for the Alabama twang in Patterson Hood's voice and the introspective, depressing themes carried by his lyrics, you wouldn't get the impression that Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance is rooted in Southern rock. Melodious instrumentals created [...]

Vinyl love for the new solo album from Patterson Hood - having listened to the tracks from his album from live recordings and YouTube recently I've been looking forward to the arrival of Mr Hood's new album, which duly turned up this week and as expected the packaging is quality, sweet double gate-fold with a quality CD style lyric booklet and a little bit of Wes Freed - the content well that's pretty high on this years personal chart and I highly recommend it. Read all about it, Hear Ya [...]

A Patterson Hood B-side is better than most songwriter's best A-sides. Hood's solo output, apart from the Truckers, has been spotted with sparse (often much darker) material, and taken as a whole (3 albums worth) amounts to a solid body of work. While never quite as satisfying as a full blooded Patterson effort such as "Used to be a Cop" the writing on these albums is concise, clear, strong and deeply personal. Hood's newest album Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance comes out Sept 11 on ATO, backed by The Downtown Rumblers: [...]

In discussing DBT with a friend a few years back, he made the astute observation. Cooley is the songwriter. Patterson is the storyteller. But for all the stories that Patterson has told over the years, very few, if any, have been about his life. There have been stories about Buford, Henry and many other characters - both fictional and real. But on Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance, Patterson looked within for his inspiration and came out his best solo effort yet. Born out of the effort of writing a book while on tour, the songs poured out. [...]

Pattersoon Hood of Drive-By Truckers is releasing his third solo album on September 11th. The album started out as a semi-fictional book Hood was writing during a turbulent period of his live in his late twenties. Over time, the book turned itself into introspective songs, as Hood describes: The songs begin in the period that the book was set in, but don't end there, as they really just were the impetus for writing about the life I am living now and contrasting it with the troubled times of two decades ago. It is in some ways [...]
